I would guess my counting Adrian's 95-41 game with Akron is the reason.   148 to 64 in game efficiency :-\

The only question I have, other than why, is how was this game only a 14 point margin at halftime.

Tonight is Calvin's annual (or semi annual) no-win contest versus the Bible Tigers of Grace.

Grace has played one D3 squad, an 84-81 loss at Valley Forge. Other comparable scores might be their 113-90 loss to Grace (IN), 86-79 win over Indiana Northwest, and 82-73 loss to Holy Cross (IN). They also have 30 pt losses to Grand Valley* and Indiana Wesleyan.

Eyeballing those score differentials it looks like Calvin should win by close to 10, but I'm expecting the game to be much closer than that for some reason.  :-[ As a team they shoot nearly 40% from the arc.

For what it's worth, Calvin is 2-3 versus Grace Bible going back through the 2009-10 season. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

*Somehow Grand Valley's entire home non-conference schedule comprised Grace Bible, Trinity Christian, and Great Lakes Christian.

On Feb. 8, Grace Bible is playing Great Lakes Christian at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Process that one.

I had been wondering why The Palace would be heading for the wrecking ball, but it all makes sense now.

Calvin beats Grace Bible by a final score of 92-70, in which both halves were 46-35. Fun facts!

Last year Calvin lost to Grace Bible as part of the Knights' very disappointing season, so I was curious to see how the two teams would match up this year. After a torrid start by the offenses of both teams (at the midpoint of the first half, both were on track to score over 100 points), things settled down. Truthfully, a lot of the early scoring was fueled by less than stellar defense by the two squads. But eventually I thought Calvin defenders frustrated a reasonably talented but undisciplined Grace quintet who began to thoughtlessly chuck shots at the rim without much flow in the offense. The Knights showed enough from the perimeter, ruled the boards and attacked the basket well. But they will face a more composed opponent and far stiffer challenge Saturday at Wheaton, who lost by two tonight at Augustana, a team that manhandled Calvin the second half last month. Other game notes:

--I'm more confident than ever that KVS is committed to a youth movement as we're seeing quite a few minutes played now by a trio of freshmen, plus Van Boxel who played only four varsity minutes prior to this season. Van Boxel, DeWitte, Trewhella and DeVries combined to play 54 minutes and acquitted themselves rather admirably. That foursome possesses a scoring mentality and while they are likely to have their ups and downs, I think they have the potential to be pretty good come February.

--speaking of Trewhella, he looked very much like a player who will be a consistent scorer at Calvin. The frosh from Mishawaka was exceptionally efficient, shooting 6-10 from the floor, snaring 5 boards, dishing 2 assists, and not making a turnover. The youngster made a lot of good decisions tonight.

I thought Calvin played a much better all-around game than they have come close to doing earlier in the year.  Part of it is the youth movement, which, as mentioned was very noticeable.  I particularly liked the amount of movement on the offense, which created far more shots than has often been true in the past.  As far as Trewhella is concerned, I agree with what you said about him, but I thought a large part of that comfort came from playing as a forward rather than as a guard as he had been doing.  His speed seemed to more easily handle forwards guarding him than it matched up against guards in previous games.  His earlier shots were from shorter distances, and that seemed  to help get him in the groove.  The rotation of players tonight seemed to work out much better than when Siegel and Drews were coming in earlier even though they do certain things well.  I think the current substitution pattern really results in more passing, screening, and movement in the offense.  When Drews and Siegel finally did play, things seemed to slow down again.

Another positive for Calvin last night: Tony Canonie did not turn the ball over in his 29 minutes of action. It's the third time this year he's gotten through a game with 20+ minutes and zero turnovers as Calvin's starting point guard.

In fact, Canonie (192 minutes), Van Boxel (76 minutes), and Amoros (19 minutes) have combined for all of Calvin's point guard playing time and have turned the ball over just 11 times combined. That seems pretty good to me.

I agree, Calvins pg are not turning the ball over very much this year.   Another positive is canonies outstanding defense this year.  He is outstanding one on one defender.  He will probably draw the jc transfer for wheaton tomorrow who is averaging almost 24 a game.

20 total assists from those 3 players though.  :-\

assists are a tough stat.  It is a subjective call, for example, in the 5 games that calvin played that were not at Hope, they assisted over 60% of the fgs.  At Hope that rate fell to less than 25%, and their have been earlier threads on this board that show that the Hope scorekeeper is not very good.  You can be magic Johnson or John Stockton and make great passes to your teammates, if they don't make the shot no assist.

I saw both games Calvin played at Hope. Trying to blame the lack of assists in those games on the scorekeeper is a cheap shot. Calvin simply did not play well and especially did not pass or move well - both things you need to get assists.
