Nice win for Trine at Adrian last night 68-54.  Pretty much held Davonte Harris in check all night until the last minute when he put in a couple of uncontested 3's with Trine up 20.  Trine played without leading rebounder Ellis Cummings, didn't hear why but assuming out sick.  Copeland had a nice game with 18, Dixon who was playing sick had 14, but the biggest contribution was from senior Addison Daub who hit 5 big 3's in the second half, I'm sure that was a career game for him as he hasn't seen much playing time until this year and now has clearly taken over the point guard position.  Sickness has coursed thru both the womens and mens teams recently, noticed a lot of coughing and hacking at the womens game last Saturday with one of their key players out.

Hope comes to town Saturday, weather permitting.  Hope by far with the better talent up and down the roster, but if Dixon has a good game and some others step up we might make it close at home.  Safe travels for those who venture out Saturday to Angola.

What are you seeing on the weather forecast that I'm not seeing? It says cloudy and 32 on Saturday for Angola on accuweather and a 20 percent chance of snow on the national weather service.

They were calling for freezing rain earlier in the week, but I checked just now and the Weather Channel says cloudy and 31 with 0% chance of precip.  So that is good news for those traveling!

Nice article on Trine's athletic website about Myles Copeland and his overcoming physical obstacles in dealing with Type 1 diabetes.

Actually Alma by 2, but yeah, should be lots of good games today.

GreatScot!?

Live stream for the Scots game against the Knights today at 3. Should be a good game at Alma! In other news Fairchild is out for the remainder of his senior season, heartbreaking news for the Scots and Chase who now have 4 guys out. Hopefully they can rebound after the loss at Hope as the youth movement continues in Alma.

A good effort in a road environment that has not been kind to Calvin in recent years. They gave a strong effort for all 40 minutes and weathered a shooting barrage by the Scots to win 95-86. Alma shot 50% from the arc, but Calvin dominated the glass 43-31 and didn't give up many second looks when Alma missed. Wilks and Welch were especially good on the offensive end scoring 28 and 19 respectively (on a combined 27 field goal and 10 free thrown attempts). Denney (17) and DeWitte (12) also scored in the double figures.

That's a five game winning streak for Calvin who moves to 4-0 in conference play.

Hope holds off Trine 78-74.

Hope led all the way, sometimes comfortably, I believe it got up to 14 at one point, and had to weather a gallant Trine comeback with some key offensive and defensive plays by Hawkins down the stretch.

In game observations keying Hope's win:

1) Defense on Will Dixon, Hawkins is a very good man on man defender, probably the best I've seen against Trine this year.  Dixon had maybe 1 open look, everything else was contested, sometimes with a double team.

2) We had no answer for Stuive, I thought his ability to either stretch the court with his shooting and also his ability to drive to the basket was key to Hope's success today.

3) Hitting the 3, Carlson had a monster 3 pt shooting game especially in the first half.

4) Trine with key turnovers at inopportune times.  Hawkins saves the game with a steal at the end when Trine had Hope stopped at 76-74, rebounded the ball, but Hawkins steals the ball on the outlet pass with Trine in a position to possibly tie or win the game.

I thought Myles Copeland was outstanding again.  He has a really solid interior game.  Ellis Cummings played one of his better games too, it might have been the best I've seen Trine make a concerted effort to feed him the ball inside.  It got Hope into a little bit of foul trouble, Blackledge had to sit for a few minutes the second half.

Good effort from my Thunder.

In the first game #25 Trine women sail past Alma 75-48.

Congrats to the Alma broadcast team who put out a very watchable and listenable game. I found the Scot announcers even handed and knowledgeable, and the video quality more than acceptable.

Basketball is about maximizing your strengths and minimizing your weaknesses. Alma's strength is perimeter shooting and they certainly didn't disappoint there, going 13-27 from the arc. Calvin's strength for this game was using their size advantage to get the ball inside and rebound. The Knights also did not disappoint, repeatedly putting Alma defenders in tough spots close to the hoop, forcing fouls and killing the host team on the boards. Calvin got 14 offensive rebounds while Alma had only 2. In the end though, I agree with almcguiregr that second half turnovers by the Scots hurt them badly and that really was the difference maker today. Alma has so many players who can shoot the ball and they don't miss many shots consecutively, so every time Calvin's defense prevented Alma from shooting the ball, that was a win-win for the Knights. I'm thinking the fact that Alma has so few players with much college experience hurt them down the stretch in a close game. Calvin stuck with their most experienced players as much as possible in the second half. Other game notes:

--Probably the best game Michael Welch has ever played for Calvin, hitting 8 of 12 floor shots and digging out several very tough rebounds.

--A second straight monster game from Michael Wilks who scored 50 points this week. Gernaat (among others) was trying to guard him and seemed to force Michael into some tough shots, but the junior from Hudsonville Unity Christian kept knocking them down.

--7 eye-popping assists by Cam Denney. Sometimes he gets too cute and forces passes, but Cam really does have great vision and he delivers the ball quickly.

Really thought Hope would have won by more than four considering they were reportedly hitting 13s. That just doesn't seem fair.

I know there was talk of a 4-point line in the NBA but this just seems a little too over the top.
