Officials don't always get it right, either. I remember a game at Calvin a few years ago where Albion coach Jody May got T'd up for yelling instructions to his point guard, who was dribbling up the middle of the court several feet away. The official who called it, Randy Hutton, apparently thought Jody was yelling at him.

GreatScot!?

I know you guys probably go over this every year, but what's the tie-breaker policy? I vaguely remember it from last year, but I can see it coming into place this year!

This was posted last February on the board, I don't believe it has changed:

"In cases where two or more teams conclude MIAA play with identical league records, the ties would
be broken using the following criteria:

a.Head to Head
b.Combined record vs. the teams ahead of the tied teams in the standings.
c.Record against 1st place team, then 2nd place team, etc....all the way through the standings.
d.Total conference road wins
e.Individual road records against conference schools, starting with the 1st place team, then 2nd place
team, etc...all the way through the standings.
f.Record in second half of conference season (last 7 games).
g.In-Region win total.
h.Coin Flip.
In the case of a tie involving multiple teams, the same tie breaking criteria as above would be used
until one team can be placed in position. The remaining tied teams would then
use the above criteria
to establish the next position until no teams remain tied. In an unbreakable tie, the position will be
determined by a coin flip conducted by the Commissioner. (5/12)
3.Once teams have been put in positions 1-8, seeds will be established"

Wins tonight by Hope and calvin would all but guarantee them the 1 and 2 spot, respectively. The knights would have the a two game lead and the tie breakers on both Alma and Trine with 3 games left, two of which are to Kalamazoo and Adrian.

However, in that situation, wins by Albion and Olivet would put them both 1 game behind Alma and Trine for the 3rd and 4th spot.

Anyone know that the technical given to Alma was for? The guys on the livestream unassuringly said it was on Ryan Clark, but didn't elaborate.

Flying Dutch Fan

With a fabulous last 5 min in regulation plus a great OT, Hope wins 83-76 over Trine. Stuive and Hawkins leading the way, with some great defense by O'Brien. That result combined with the Alma win at Calvin, and the Flying Dutchmen are the MIAA champions and will be hosting the league tournament.

The technicals were called on Charlie Goffnet.  He was given a warning as he left the floor at halftime for arguing about a call. The first technical was given because he stood up to argue a call.  Ryan Clark, was the head coach tonight. Only one coach is allowed to speak and stand.  Goffnet should not have been standing side by side with Clark arguing the call.  Goffnet received his second technical when he slammed his notebook on the scorer's table 3 times while disagreeing with a call. The technicals were warranted.

Why Goffnet was upset in the first place was a total mystery to me, as it was to my buddy, a local official who noted the T's were automatic. Since Charlie was not the designated head coach, the rules require that he stay seated and not argue with the ref--which he did quite vociferously. That's two games in a row the Alma coaching staff has seen a staff member tossed. It nearly cost Alma the game but the Scots got bailed out when, in rapid succession, Harvey hit four straight three pointers, followed by a difficult, end-of-the-shot-clock three by Gernaat. That flurry of impressive long-distance shooting finally erased Calvin's double digit lead in a span of four minutes. From there, it was a dogfight and Alma scored on their last possession while the Knights missed. Calvin was a miserable 2-15 from the arc, but that's almost de rigueur this season.

That makes a lot more sense. You couldn't really see what was happening in the bench area from the live cam and the commentary guys seemed unsure as well.

I really should know this, but honestly haven't paid close enough attention I guess. Do head coaches receiving technicals lose their "standing priveledges" at the NCAA level? Or is that just an NFHS rule?

Maybe its time to add another T in Alma Scots

Hope 83  Trine 76  OT

Seems like just about every MIAA Champion I can think of or remember well has had a game like this.  Most often on the road, but some times at home where they somehow find a way to bail themselves out and win a game they maybe shouldn't have.  This was Hope's.

A very close facsimile to the Trine/Calvin game a week or so ago where the Thunder hit a hot streak of 3-point shots and were leading 41-34 at the half.  Some foul misfortune early in the 2nd half on Harrison Blackledge put Hope in a very difficult situation of trailing by 11 and Blackledge on the bench with 4 fouls.  Will Dixon hit a 3 with just a touch over 9 minutes left to put Trine up 65-57, they would score just 6 points the rest of regulation as Hope played its best stretch of defense, while some of those open 3's of earlier just didn't go down for the Thunder.

We ended up in a tie game with Trine having the last shot, they were able to get the ball to Kyle Dobson about 18 feet out in the key but he found no shot available and could not find anyone open before he finally settled on a pretty tough defended 17/18 footer that missed, Stuive cleaned up the board.  In OT Michell O'Brien hit a 3 on the first possession and for the first time in a really long time Hope had the lead.  Trine couldn't answer, then missed a 3-pointer its next trip and before we even hit the 3 min to play mark of OT Hope was ahead by 7 and went on to score 4 more before Trine finally tallied an overtime point.

Hope:  Hawkins 24, Stuive 21, O'Brien 10
Trine:  Dodson 17, Dixon 15, Daub 14, Copeland 14

Remaining games:
11-0  Hope  (@Adrian, Kzoo, Calvin)   MIAA Champion, semi-final host

7-4  Calvin  (Kzoo-----@Adrian, @Hope)
7-4  Alma    (@Trine----Albion, Olivet)
6-5  Trine    (Alma------Olivet, @Albion)
5-6  Olivet   (Albion----@Trine, @Alma)
5-6  Albion  (@Olivet---@Alma, Trine)

2-9  Kzoo     (@Calvin------ @Hope, Adrian)   ---eliminated
1-10  Adrian  (Hope--------Calvin, @Kzoo)  ---eliminated

This can all still fall a lot of ways.  Pretty cool we have Alma, Trine, Albion, Olivet all playing each other in the next 3 game days with playoff spots on the line.  Schedule certainly favors Calvin to clinch a spot soon but its not impossible for them to miss the semi-finals yet, unlikely they miss out but you never know.

Pivotal day Saturday with Alma @ Trine, Albion @ Olivet

Alma threw in a lot of tough looks in final few minutes. Kudos to the Scots for putting them in on a night when Calvin was particularly bad from the floor.

Harvey's three-point barrage coincided with a stretch where KVS was imploring his offense to have smart possessions. Unfortunately many of the Calvin players thought smart possessions were mid rage pull-up jumpers with 20+ seconds on the shot clock.
