500 wins is a lot of wins.  Congrats to KVS on an impressive milestone.

Michael Wilks was dressed but sat at the end of the bench and did not play in Calvin's 64-56 win over Kalamazoo.

The Hornet big men once again game the Knights fits in the post. Michael Welch, who fouled out, was very frustrated that the officials allowed the Hornets to bully their way into offensive position while being quick with a whistle against the defense when they returned the favor.

A well-earned 15-point halftime lead was quickly extended to 23 before Kalamazoo battled back. They made the final few minutes interesting though never really threatened to take the lead.

Sort of head scratching that Calvin could shoot 47% from the arc and win the rebounding battle by 10 and only win by a single digit margin.

Wilks had the flu.  Exceptionally good performances by Canonie and Siegel.  Denney, unfortunately, continued on his pace of a turnover every five minutes. Some nice glimpses of Alex Bos in this game.  The win gave KVS his 500th career win.

8-4  Calvin  (@Adrian, @Hope)
7-5  Alma    (Albion, Olivet)
7-5  Trine    (Olivet, @Albion)

I am struggling hard to find a tie breaker scenario where Olivet makes it in. Is there one?

If Albion and Olivet win out then Alma, Trine, and Olivet would be tied with 7 wins (Albion would be in the field with 8). Olivet would be 3-1 in games with Alma and Trine.

Calvin has indeed clinched a spot in the top four.

Bumping the tiebreakers:

This was posted last February on the board, I don't believe it has changed:

"In cases where two or more teams conclude MIAA play with identical league records, the ties would
be broken using the following criteria:

a.Head to Head
b.Combined record vs. the teams ahead of the tied teams in the standings.
c.Record against 1st place team, then 2nd place team, etc....all the way through the standings.
d.Total conference road wins
e.Individual road records against conference schools, starting with the 1st place team, then 2nd place
team, etc...all the way through the standings.
f.Record in second half of conference season (last 7 games).
g.In-Region win total.
h.Coin Flip.
In the case of a tie involving multiple teams, the same tie breaking criteria as above would be used
until one team can be placed in position. The remaining tied teams would then
use the above criteria
to establish the next position until no teams remain tied. In an unbreakable tie, the position will be
determined by a coin flip conducted by the Commissioner. (5/12)
3.Once teams have been put in positions 1-8, seeds will be established"

Is it a straight head-to-head or combined? I would think that this would only eliminate Alma, not give the tie-breaker to Olivet? In which case, Trine and Olivet split and you'd go to combined record vs. top of the league. Neither beat Hope, neither beat calvin, and in this scenario, Albion would be third and beat Olivet both times but lost at Trine.

Its believed with two teams tied for 4th who split the regular season there would be a play-in game.  In the above scenario of Albion/Olivet winning both games this week, Alma is eliminated leaving Trine and Olivet to square off in a play-in game.

Hopefully Alma just wins these two home games and we won't have to worry about that!  ;)

One Mississippi, Two Mississippi...

TUAngola

Trine with hard fought win over Olivet tonight.

Olivet I thought played very well.  They came out on fire.  Ewing was impressive, ringing up 3ball after 3ball, even with guys in his face.  They controlled the first half fairly easily.  Olivet played zone the whole game and dared Trine to win with the 3.  And it worked to their advantage for the most part as Trine was awful from behind the arc.  Their zone was pretty effective as they just didn't pack it in, they were very active and trapped a lot.

The second half was just a really gutsy performance by Trine.  In his last game in Hershey Hall, Will Dixon was just a stud.  His effort was contagious, he wasn't going to let his last game at Hershey be a loss.  The defensive effort as a whole was much better and we got some steals and hoops in transition.  Just like Jared Holmquist last year, Will Dixon is such a leader, both on and off the court.  He is currently 6th all time career scoring at the school, and has a chance to climb to 5th before the end of the year.  Thanks Will, it's been a joy to watch you play over your career here at Trine.

We've gone the way of the HCAC board I see

other finals
Calvin 84 Adrian 58
Hope 72  Kzoo 65........65 missed shots, 38 turnovers, 51 fouls.....which is why......

....I was at Alma  Albion 70  Alma 67

Kind of a weird game of runs.  Albion had a 14-2 run to lead by 10 at 24-14 with 11:26 to play in the first half.  Alma  then outscored Albion 29-5 to lead 43-29 finishing the half leading 43-31, made an the first 3 ball of the second half and led by 15.

At 54-47 Alma leading, Albion went on an 18-3 run to gain the lead and held off the Scots who went a little over 8 minutes without a FG.  The Brits actually had an 8 point lead.  In the final 20 seconds Alma had two cracks at tying the game.  Ryan Stevens missed a 3 that went down and out, a quick foul by Alma meant Albion had to inbound the ball and Alma promptly stole it and Trevor Gernaat got another good 3-ball up that missed.

There were so many short misses in this game I couldn't have counted them.  Pretty sure there were more short misses than fouls called with only 26 for the game and just 17 attempted FT's, very refreshing.

Albion:  Wheeler 15, Rubio 12, Burks 10
Alma:  Stevens 16, Gernaat 15

Albion has now won 5 in a row, has gone from the best 4-10 team I've ever seen to being within reach of making the MIAA semi-finals.

Remaining games:
13-0  Hope  (Calvin)   MIAA Champion, semi-final host
9-4  Calvin  (@Hope)  2nd seed

8-5  Trine    (@Albion)
7-6  Alma    (Olivet)
7-6  Albion  ( Trine)

5-8  Olivet   (@Alma)   ---eliminated
2-11  Kzoo     (Adrian)   ---eliminated
1-12  Adrian  (@Kzoo)  ---eliminated

Several scenarios for the MIAA Tournament yet.

I think this is right.
Trine win, Alma win   Trine is 3rd seed, Alma 4th seed
Trine win, Alma loss  Trine is 3rd seed, Alma/Albion either have a play-in game or Alma wins tie-breaker by beating Trine
Albion win, Alma win  3-way tie Trine, Albion, Alma, all 3 went 2-2 vs each other.  Albion and Alma both beat Calvin eliminating Trine.  Albion is 3 seed by beating Olivet twice, Alma 4th seed
Albion win, Alma loss  Albion/Trine tie for 3rd, Albion wins tie-break by beating Calvin.  Albion 3rd seed, Trine 4th seed

Weird:
Alma cant' be the 3rd seed
Albion can't be the 4th seed
