Calvin schedule for 2017-18 is up:

http://calvinknights.com/sports/mbkb/2017-18/schedule

Among the highlights:

At Augustana and IWU on back-to-back nights. Maybe that will be a lowlight.

A home game against Martin Luther on December 1. Can't ever remember playing that school but with this year being the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, maybe it's one way to settle the debate over consubstantiation .

Games at Whitworth and Puget Sound.

Martin Luther won 2 games last season.  They are a schedule filler.  I like the schedule except for this game.

Well I guess that means the Calvinist position on Holy Communion will be vindicated.

You may want to hold off on your doctrinal fiat, OK, since Calvin will be playing two other Lutheran schools, Augustana and Carthage, that pose much more of a threat (at least in basketball terms, if not in theological rigor) than do the Knights of Martin Luther College.

The Knights will play two national finalists from 2017 on the schedule in Cornerstone (NAIA) and Augustana (D3), another team that made the NCAA III Final Four in 2017 (Whitworth), four teams that made the 2017 NCAA III Tournament in Augustana, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Whitworth and Hope, plus Aquinas who made the NAIA tournament. Calvin will play 11 teams that made their respective conference tournaments in Augustana, Anderson, Illinois Wesleyan, Carthage, Cornerstone, Aquinas, Whitworth, Wisconsin-Oshkosh Hope, Trine and Alma.

Illinois Wesleyan didn't make the CCIW tournament in 2017.

Alma drops Finlandia and North Park, adds Illinois Wesleyan and WashU for next season.

Augustana, Elmhurst, North Central and Wheaton stay on the schedule. As does Ohio Northern.

Tournament weekend at Wooster is on the schedule, as is a tournament weekend in Daytona, FL.

I think it's safe to say the Scots' SOS will be very good once again.

http://almascots.com/sports/mbkb/2017-18/schedule

That schedule is brutal. No home games in November not to mention 4 very difficult road contests. Back to back holiday tournaments on the road against probably strong competition...

Alma will be battle tested come MIAA play...but what will their record be?

I love the tough schedule. The Elite 8 team a few years ago went 7-6 in the non conference playing a very similar schedule. Lots of road games. Nationally ranked opponents every weekend. I think it sets them up so much better coming into league play than winning 12 games against soft opponents.

Not to mention the benefit of playing tough teams on the road. Even if Alma were set up to potentially host a pod, I'm not sure how easy it is getting teams to Alma (I'm not as educated on this process as many of the people here are, but I do think that the location would be challenging)
Certainty not a cakewalk for the Scots this year. The team will not have the experience it had in 2016 during their elite 8 run, but they will still have a few players from that team coming back from injury and five sophomores that played significant minutes last season. They will certainly be battle tested going into MIAA play, so it will be interesting to see how they handle the pressure of such a tough non-conference record. After a disappointing season due to injuries, the Scots will be young and hungry this season!

That is a long ride Augustana (Rock Island) Friday, 8pm to IWU (Bloomington) Sat 5pm back to back whether they go to Bloomington Friday night or Saturday morning as there is no expressway between the two.

Actually, I-74 runs directly from RI to Bloomingon.

The other interesting thing on the Calvin schedule, which is even more striking when I view it in a standard list form, is again how scheduling practices change for schools once their coach gets on the committee. Four CCIW teams, a WIAC team and one of the west coast powers -- that's the way to go!

Thanks for the correction on IWU Greg.

As for holding bragging rights on doctrinal issues, you make a fair point. But I would note that Augustana and Carthage are ELCA affiliated while Martin Luther College is closely associated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. This means that Calvinists are on the cusp of being able to say "We cansubstantiate our doctrinal superiority over the WELS!"

Gregory Sager

Yeah, that's why I put in that bit about theological rigor. There's not what I would consider to be a pronounced faith aspect to either Augustana or Carthage, both of which are pretty secularized schools in spite of (or perhaps, some wags might say, because of) their ELCA affiliation.

Don't know much about the kid beyond what is written in the link below. As best I can tell he seems to be a beefy 6'3" guard and a prolific three point shooter, which should be welcome at VNA given last season's woes from the arc. With a 4.7 GPA and class valedictorian, I'm assuming the coaching staff isn't worried Derek will be able to remain eligible.

Derek appears on Hudl. I don't think he missed a shot.

Per his twitter account, Calvin Hackert (Ludington HS) is going to Hope. Not exactly a surprise given that his mother is Dina Disney, former Hope conference MVP who led the Hope women to their first national championship in 1990. The only surprise is the fact that a Hope alumna would name her son after the school's arch-rival. :o I saw the kid play in the state tournament where Hackert led Ludington into the Class B state championship game. He could be a nice pickup for Hope. An excellent shooter from way beyond the arc, good court sense, good passer, and goes to the hole quite well. If you take the time to read the link, you can read about his interesting basketball path through high school. Hackert's senior season was the only year he played high school basketball in the State of Michigan so his name isn't very familiar to most Michigan fans.

Still too close for comfort. I'd try "Vin" instead.

Does anyone have any new insight on the Beckman brothers - Jason & Danny? Where do they plan on playing next year 2017-18?
