Michael Thomas leaving his position as an Albion assistant to take the boys head coaching position at Grand Blanc HS:

Not necessarily in that order though. ;)   Good luck to Michael and his family on their move.

Side note:  Grand Blanc HS was not so politely excluded from the Kensington Valley Conference which is undergoing a major overhaul, mostly due to being a travel outlier when size of school was taken into consideration for league organization.   Beginning in 2018-19 Grand Blanc was accepted into the Saginaw Valley League where they'll now be the largest school district.

Grand Blanc was kind of an outsider from the beginning. It was about ten years ago when the Kensington Valley and Western Lakes merged and expanded to form a 24 school mega athletic association broken up into two conferences and four divisions of six teams each. The 24th was supposed to be a new high school in Howell, but that didn't last long enough to field varsity sports and is now being used as a middle school. Grand Blanc became number 24 as a result.

Milford, Pinckney, South Lyon, South Lyon East, Walled Lake Central, Walled Lake Northern, Walled Lake Western, Waterford Kettering, Waterford Mott, and White Lake Lakeland all announced earlier this spring that they are leaving the conference, putting Grand Blanc even more on an island (geographically speaking) than they already were.

Of the 14 remaining schools in the conference, only Grand Blanc voted for themselves to stay and were booted in a 13-1 vote. Belleville was accepted into the conference to replace Grand Blanc.

My high school alma mater is in the conference so it has been an interesting process to see play out.

MIAA Sanctions for K-Zoo:
http://www.miaa.org/general/2016-17/releases/Kalamazoo

Looks like the last four seasons will have wins and championships vacated with no post-season play in 2017-18.

Vacated titles aside for men's tennis, this likely ends their 79 year streak of men's tennis titles since they won't be competing in next springs tournament.

KzooHornet

I think it actually means that the streak ended at 74 and they started a new streak this year...which will come to an end next year.

Only in the record books... I bet they keep the banners hanging.

Ha. Couldn't resist. Common refrain and such with these things.

Ah, just semantics.  They can vacate them all they want but they still won the titles those 4 years.  (ie Louisville still beat Michigan)  Next spring they won't even be able to play in the semi-final which makes it impossible to win the overall title.  Streak ends then for me. :-\

The record book will say

11  Kzoo
12  Kzoo
13  vacated
14  vacated
15  vacated
16  vacated
17  Kzoo

I agree with Sac. The vacated wins still happened. However, this year there will be a non-KZoo champion, which will end KZoo's streak.

I think Kzoo Men's Tennis can still go unbeaten in duals in the spring of '18 and claim the MIAA title.  See the link below:

If Kzoo has a good non-conference record, the MIAA could send two teams to NCAA's as K will not play in the AQ tournament due to the infraction, but could claim an at-large bid.  If I am misinterpreting the ruling, feel free to let me know.

Yes... they still happened, but they are pulled from the record books and trophies are returned. However, the joke has always been that the banners tend not to be removed and the "rings" tend not to be returned. UMass is usually the best reference to this as their men's basketball banners still hang.

Thus why it was a bit of a joke comment.

Correct. Kzoo would not be allowed to compete for the MIAA title next academic year, but they will be eligible for an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament if they are good enough to be selected. The MIAA decision does not affect any of Kzoo's teams or individuals from participating in NCAA Tournaments. They are only banned from MIAA tournaments.

Well, I think they can win the MIAA title in 2018 based on how the MIAA determines their conference champ in the regular season.  If they go 7-0 again, hang another banner.  The MIAA tournament appears to simply be for the conference's AQ.  The link from my earlier post outlines MIAA championship determination.

I didn't realize or had forgotten they changed formats recently.  It does appear Kzoo can win next years title and the streak is technically over.

maybe 80* next year. ;)

When you read the statement sent out by the MIAA it is very clear that Kalamazoo College did not voluntarily surrender those titles.  They were "required" to do so.  The statement also reads they are "prohibited" from participating in any MIAA tournaments next year.  Required and prohibited are not suggestions, but requirements.
The statement also reads: "Kalamazoo will vacate all MIAA team-sport victories, including both regular season and postseason contests, for the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 seasons. All MIAA regular season and conference championships by Kalamazoo during the sanctioned time period will be vacated, and applicable signage and publications will reflect those vacated wins and championships.
Considering the harshness of this statement one has to doubt if the "hanging of a banner" or using a "80*" is going to be considered either in the spirit or the letter of this document.
Statements like the one issued by the MIAA are by their very nature the product of compromise.  The 8-1 vote does indicates that serious "bridge mending" (to quote the MIAA commissioner) needs to take place.
