Might be a record number of Freshmen in the MIAA this year.
Hope's roster--http://athletics.hope.edu/sports/mbkb/2017-18/roster--will contribute to that. Only one frosh from last year's jv makes varsity, along with six new frosh and one transfer. A rebuilding year with a great first-year class?
This may be a team that is decidedly better by year's end than at the beginning.

Calvin's roster is up.

http://calvinknights.com/sports/mbkb/2017-18/roster

No Luke Van Boxel and no Mike Siegel.

David Rinke is listed as a Freshman on Calvin roster. That is either (1) a typo or (2) an indication that he has been granted a medical hardship waiver. He appeared very briefly in five regular season contests in the first semester last year but didn't dress or play after that.

From talking to David and his father last year, I know that he was planning as taking last year as a red shirt year because of his injury and to return with 4 years of eligibility.  He had a stress fracture to his foot.

Definitely a new look, but then that was to be expected with the graduating class of last year.  I've added the link again below, since it was not clickable in pointlem's post.

I like the size that I see on Hope's roster.  I saw both Gamm and Granger play this summer with the guys at The Courthouse, and liked what I saw.

Interesting to see that we have 3 teams in MIAA with brothers playing - Hope, Trine, and Calvin.  And in all three situations the older brother with Jr. eligibility transferred, and will now be playing with his younger brother the Fr.

I know this happens at all levels, in various degrees, at all schools, and it happened to my son at Hope 20 some years ago (never any bitterness from our family as a result), but you have to feel bad for those JV players from last year who likely tried out... and didn't make it... Probably recruited out of HS, thrilled with the decision to attend a place like Hope (or Calvin, or Wheaton or IWU etc), but someone else is a little better, and there are no roster spots left.... if they had shot just a quarter step lower in the college selection process, they might be looking forward to playing varsity for 3 years after their JV experience.... it's a shame if the kid has done everything right, but just wasn't quite good enough... then again, welcome to the real world...
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Not to mention, there's plenty of minutes to go around too. After Dante, Jason, Dennis, and Teddy, your guess is as good as mine as to how Mitchell will distribute minutes between Riley, Luke, Robert, and all the newcomers.

I don't know- that's a lot of really young guys who might still be growing.

This roster is probably thin at the "3" or wing positions.  Its Teddy Ray then.........I don't know, Dreyer maybe?.

Which makes it puzzling why a guy like Ben Ritsema was left off the roster...

I've heard the NCAA is allowing teams an extra exhibition game if the proceeds go to the red cross for storm relief.  Calvin and Hope are going to take advantage of that and play other local schools.  Next Monday Calvin will be playing Davenport at Hope at 6 pm followed by Hope playing GVSU.  Sounds like a good time for a great cause and a chance to watch some early MIAA basketball!

That's pretty cool. The game is up on Calvin's official schedule page now as well.
