GreatScot!?

On Thursday the Scots battled Cornerstone and came up short losing 59-73. It was a 3 point game at the half with the score being close for a lot of the game, but there was a stretch where Cornerstone went on a 19-0 or maybe more run that the Scots couldn't recover from. The Scots first two regular season contests are coming up this weekend against Illinois Wesleyan and Augustana, should be two great tests!

Preston Laketa is shooting 8-10 on three pointers this exhibition season. Calvin's team is 10-55.

Greek Tragedy

So Hope is favored again even though they lose 4 of their top 5 players. Is the rest of the league that bad? I guess it's an honest question.

Tony DeWitte has a cast on his foot and looks to be out for a while.

I missed tonight's game (a Monday game? Seriously?) but heard from a former Calvin player that DeWitte broke a bone in his foot during the Trinity game (that would explain his second half absence) and had surgery. Expect DeWitte to be done for the season. For a team as challenged as Calvin is from the arc, that really hurts.

So 4 of the 5 guys who shot better from behind the arc than Calvin's team average from last year are graduated or injured.

I was a little puzzled Hope got the pre-season nod, but I don't think there is a clear favorite this year.  Between Hope, Calvin and Alma at least one or two should end up pretty good at years end and I think Olivet and their dozen Juco's and transfers is a wild card team.

Weak?  Eh, probably not but I wouldn't call it strong either.   I think we'll be pretty lucky if a league team cracks the top 4 in any regional poll.  Not our year for rankings probably.  The non-conference is going to look like a struggle  with Alma and Calvin both over scheduling and Hope playing a very challenging slate or its young team.  Within the conference though there should be really good parity.

Greek Tragedy

I did notice it was fairly close with the 1st place cotes going 4, 2, 2 and the points being 45, 40, 39. I suppose I can look at it as if the trailing teams closed the gap.

This game was originally scheduled for Saturday (I believe) but got bumped to Monday for some reason. Perhaps the probability that Calvin might have hosted a Volleyball regional? Not sure.

KVS seems pretty set on his 9-man rotation Canonie, DeVries, Wilks, Bykerk, and Luke Morrison with Amoros, Bos, Tom Morrison, and Walter coming off the bench. Shymanski looks to be the 10th man when needed.

This makes Calvin extremely thin in the backcourt. Only three of those players in the top nine are listed as guards. Canonie logged 33 minutes last night in an exhibition game that they won by 16  :-\.

Looks like someone from JV was called up to Varsity. I couldn't quite tell who it was.

Last night was the first time I was able to see Calvin this season, and I saw a better team than I expected.  They look strong on the boards with De Vries, Bos, Walter, and both Morrisons, which had to be an area of concern after losing Cam Denney, who led the league in rebounding by a large margin.  They have some fine shooters in Wilks, the Morrisons, and possibly De Vries.  The shooting last night was good at times, including 3 point shots, though I would have to call it streaky.  As mentioned, they have to have at least one more guard step up, whether someone on the roster that did not get in, or more time for Shymanski, which would also help the shooting.  Walter looked solid on both offense and defense and should get plenty of playing time.  Bykerk was a little shaky on his shooting and the boards, and I expect more from him down the line, or else Walter might get even more time.  Both De Vries and Bos have quite an upside from what I saw.  It looks like they should be competitive in the league.

Not too worried about Calvin's backcourt.  With DeWitte out, Luke Morrison stepped into a starting role and, along with his brother Tom, showed good poise, speed, aggressiveness, basketball intelligence, and they are both good shooters.  Three point shooting last night was about 35%.  They're either getting better or they need to play their games in the old gym like they did last night.

Calvin has a tough schedule ahead of conference play and hopefully they can get a win or two.  Lot's of work to do with this young group but I expect they will continue to improve and be ready again for MIAA tournament success.

What?  Another optimist?  I completely agree.  But then I've always been the glass is half full kind of guy.  I particularly like the players you mentioned, but I do think 3 players in the guard positions who are very active could use a little help.

GVSU 96  Olivet 64

Jalen Adams and Tracy Edmond attempted 31 of Olivet's 62 shots.  Real one for GVSU, exhibition for Olivet.

Saginaw Valley St.  79  Olivet 67

Olivet led by 6 at halftime, and the margin didn't reach double digits until a couple minutes to play.  I got a kick out of the SVSU PBP guy perplexed that the team playing an exhibition wasn't fouling at the end, neither here nor there but its really dumb these games count for one team and not the other.  FWIW this was Saginaw's first W of the season.

Edmond 18, Adams 16, Washington 10......I'd say thats probably going to be a regular thing.

It's running now.  Augustana leads 44-33 at half.
