Final from Augie:

Augustana 80
Calvin 69

Freshman Luke Morrison led the Knights with 18 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. Carlos Amoros added 12 points and Austin Bykerk and Tom Morrison contributed 9 each.

Augie bolted to a 16-0 lead out of the gate, and Calvin only occasionally was within single digits thereafter.
Only 14 minutes of playing time, and 4 points, for Michael Wilks tonight.

TUAngola

Ohio Wesleyan 99 Trine 96 (at Kenyon College)

Trine was down big early, 36-12 midway thru first half, but kept battling back to make it a ballgame in the 2nd.  Junior Myles Copeland with career high 39 pts, Pete Smith 19 and Langston Johnson 15.

2nd day of invitional tomorrow against Kenyon.

Less than 2 months before we move in to the MTI Center.

Hope got roasted at Marietta tonight.  Hawkins hurt his wrist very early on and Hope had real trouble doing anything on offense.  Once they were down, it was over.  Marietta is deep and tough.  I was very impressed with the Hope squad, although you really are going to need a healthy Hawkins to do anything significant.

Well, Hope's not going to get any good news on the Hawkins injury.  He and Tony DeWitte will have a lot in common it appears.  That's an injury that simply couldn't happen to Hope this year.

Marietta 102  Hope 71

Hope got drilled and probably lost their all-league guard to injury for the season.  Bright spot was Jason Beckman who was excellent and who will now shoulder even more of the load.  It will take some time for Hope to find its scoring roles.

Beckman 26, Towns 11, Ray 10

That is so too bad, both for Tony and Dante and for their respective teams (if, indeed, both have suffered season-ending injuries). Both were key players this year.

I notice that Ryan Gamm didn't get minutes tonight (and had come in early against GVSU). Was he suited up, Sac?

It's difficult to know what to make of Calvin's 11 point loss at Augustana. I only watched the second half and the home team generally looked far superior to the Knights. The Vikings were bigger and stronger than Calvin, seemed to have their way inside and out, forcing their opponent into mostly off-balance, rushed shots, many of which barely caught iron. Wilks and DeVries were total non-factors, going a combined 2-9 from the floor, and the normally reliable Tony Canonie committed 4 turnovers. When Calvin was down 13, it seemed liked 30. Yet the visitors played with heart and closed the gap into single digits with four minutes left, forcing a second half timeout I don't think Grey Giovanine (or me) ever expected would need to be taken. Freshmen Luke Morrison is a revelation. He plays without fear, sports a nice touch, and will make the loss of Tony DeWitte much easier to digest. Losing to last year's national runners-up--a team expected to do great things again this season--is no embarrassment, but Calvin just can't keep shooting 20% from the arc and expect to challenge for anything in the MIAA.

Ryan Gamm did not make the trip to Marietta as he is dealing with a concussion and thus the required protocol.

Have there been nights similar to last night when all MIAA teams playing lost during the same time?  Is does not appear the league will be real strong this year with almost every team rebuilding, using many freshmen, and still trying to figure who can really play.  First impression looks as if Triine and Olivet have played the best so far, but more games will tell as we see various team comparisons against the same opponents.  Injuries may play a big role, too, especially with Hope losing such a key player.  The good news is that the league will likely be very competitive.

It's a weird year. I have a long memory and I can't ever remember the league having an entire slate of teams that isn't remotely ready for prime time. I hope that's not the new normal in the MIAA.

we'll file this under "omg early season injury panic mode from 300 miles away" but at least this morning the news is better for Dante and first look says nothing broken.

I don't know his status for this afternoon but I kind of assume he won't play.

They thought it was broken when I left the gym last night.  I'm headed over in a few minutes this morning.  Glad to know the news may be good.  They really can't afford to lose him.  Although, I must say, his continuing to play for 8+ minutes after injuring it is one of the toughest things I've ever seen, especially for a PG.  He literally had to call for the ref to stop the game because the pain got to be too much.

Yeah, "nothing broken" doesn't mean there  isn't another soft tissue issue that might put him on the shelf awhile.  This will probably be something we'll have to wait for Hope to return to Holland and get a good look from athletic department docs on Monday.

Me hitting enter here also greatly increases the chances he laces them up and goes for 30 against St. John Fisher this afternoon. ;)
