GreatScot!?

The Scots got their first win down at Ohio Northern last night. The Scots showed the kind of offensive and defensive prowess they are capable of and it was nice to see the guys coming off injury start to get their legs back. Kevin Gamble had 20 points and 7 rebounds, Doug Bradfield had 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks and Rob Holmes had 5 points 9 boards and 3 assists, all three of them sat out last year due to injuries. Ryan Stevens had 17 points and 8 assists as well as it took a collective team effort to beat ONU last night and that's what makes them a dangerous team, because they can get contributions from so many guys. Looking forward to watching them battle Washington University on Sunday!

No "reports" on any of the other games last night?  I see that Mr. Wilkes for Calvin "showed up" with 26 points last night.

Not a report but a broader observation. Calvin is now 1-3 against D3 opponents. They still have Luther, OshKosh, Carthage, Puget Sound, and Whitworth before MIAA play.

A loss to Luther would be more embarrassing than the loss to Trinity. A win against OshKosh or Whitworth feels like it would be equally surprising. Carthage and Puget Sound could go either way. Pretty crazy that starting MIAA play at 4-5 feels like a "best case" scenario for the Knights, with 2-7 a very real possibility.

Calvin was just whistled for another foul. Anderson free throws forthcoming.

I don't want to sound like sour grapes, but Calvin has attempted 79 less fts than their opponents.  That is an average of 13 per game. There is some bad d to blame but 5 games on the road doesn't help.  I was at the game last night and it was pretty one sided.  Even on their home court Wheaton shot 7 more fts.  They are capable and need to start playing a solid 40 minute game.

Not a report but a broader observation. Calvin is now 1-5 against D3 opponents. They still have Luther, OshKosh, Carthage, Puget Sound, and Whitworth before MIAA play.

Calvin is 1-3 vs. D3 opponents.

The Knights couldn't overcome a 12-point halftime deficit at Anderson despite a very good shooting night and a decisive victory on the glass. Unfortunately the Ravens shot even better and drew 32 Calvin fouls en route to 38 free throw attempts. Wilks was indeed excellent with 29 points in 30 minutes of play.

We knew Calvin's schedule was going to be tough and that they had a decent chance to enter conference play with a losing record. They've lost the three they were supposed and won one of the three toss ups. Martin Luther is the only game on the pre-conference schedule that looked like a sure win (it still does). I will personally guarantee that the Knights will win on Friday.

Very little has happened to shift our preseason expectations at this point.

Good Correction! I don't know why I was counting Cornerstone and Aquinas...

Didn't see the Calvin vs. Anderson game and only can report from what I see in the stats. Anderson shot 10-15 from the arc the opening 20 minutes to build a 12 point halftime lead, and that's when the game was decided, as Calvin could only outscore their hosts by two the second half. Anderson isn't a bad team, having gone 17-9 last year. The Ravens are now 3-1 this season with two of their wins over Adrian and Kalamazoo, each by very comfortable margins. Anderson's only loss was a hard-fought 79-70 decision to 11th ranked UW-Whitewater (now 4-0) on the Warhawks' home floor. Whitewater was tabbed for second in the WIAC pre-season poll so that lone Anderson loss is not a bad one for them.

In a no-defense matchup of key figures in the development of Protestantism, Calvin dispatched Martin Luther 105-76.

Freshman Luke Morrison led the victorious Knights with 24, with transfer Jason Walter adding 18. Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez tossed in 12 and Austin Bykerk chipped in with 10.

Martin Luther is small and winless on the season.

The Lutherans played gamely and with passion, but in the end fell 19 theses short of 95 and bowed to the Calvinist's superior size, strength and experience. Nothing bespeaks the weakness of Calvin's opponent more than the fact that the home team managed to sleep-walk through long stretches of play and still win by 29. Luther is one of the youngest and smallest teams I have ever seen compete on the Knollcrest campus, sporting a 13 man lineup that has 7 freshmen and 5 sophomores,, and with only two players as tall as 6'4". If the hosts had finished better around the hoop, a 120 point game would have been in reach for Calvin. Honestly, not much to learn from tonight's win.

Calvin wins against a much easier opponent Martin Luther.  Calvin didn't play great, but got everybody got in and played some minutes.  Calvin out rebounded Martin Luther by 15, had 8 more offensive rebounds, had 6 less to,  and 4 more steals and shot 12 less fts!  That makes 90 less fts shot this year.

Not a lot to add about Calvin's win over one of the lesser reformers. Martin Luther played hard and expended a lot of energy. They were out of gas early in the second half. In the end it was about what we expected.

Ouch! My Lutheran born mother is bristling. You really don't want to incur her Hungarian rath. You really don't.

wots is that Hope's Dante Hawkins will be back sooner rather than later.  Maybe even next Tuesday?
My wife ran into Dante on campus and asked him about his hand. He said his x-ray showed no break, he's practicing this week with no contact, and he is expecting to play Tuesday against Grace Bible.
It will be great to see Hope at full strength especially if Dante (hand) & Zandstra (Broken Collar Bone) can both return at full strength. The guards with Jason, Dante, Lewis & Zandstra will be very versatile and deep and hopefully provide a little more consistent shooting and defense. If the bigs - Towns, Granger, Ray & McGiveny can continue to contribute along with the others, Hope should be solid and should be near the top of the MIAA. Looking forward to the league competition soon. HK
