Here's a video snippet from yesterday of a technical foul on Olivet's bench.   I presume its on Ernst, but suspect maybe its on one of the assistants who says something but its unclear.  It really looks like the official is pointing at Ernst, if that's the case this might be one of the worst technical foul calls I've ever seen.

I included a bit of the before's to show what Ernst is upset about, take a look at the left side of the screen as the shot goes up and you'll Hope's Preston Granger tangling with Olivet's Angus Bennett.  Arnulfo Perez makes the foul call on Bennett. You should probably know Arnulfo had a very bad moment earlier in the game where he misses a clear foul in front of Hope's bench and then makes a comical goal-tending call on a Dennis Towns rebound which was overturned by one of his mates.  That got Ernst going the final few minutes of the half so he was already boiling.  Ernst and Arnulfo had at least one encounter last season which was ....not great.

Ernst does something here, you can see the third official spot or hear something and go directly to the table and call the T.

Thought it was weak at the time, but when you've built your reputation up......

Olivet had 5 TEAM technicals a year ago, 4 in league play.   They have 4 for this season, yesterday was the first in league play.  I think he's been warned in every game I've attended but maybe 1 or 2.

Doesn't take much to get Ernst going. He's pretty much in a perpetual state of boil. The call on #50 happened when he put his right arm around Granger who had block out position. Granger did what every player learns to do in that situation--lock your arm towards your upper body as tightly as you can so the defender can't remove it without pulling you to the ground. The defender should always get called on that because you have to learn to keep your hands to yourself when you're out of position for a rebound. I don't know if the T on Olivet's bench was merited because we don't know what was said.

The final stats of the Calvin/Albion game shows that the combined number of assists by all of the Calvin guards that played was 0.    I'm not sure what that says about this team or their style of play.

Make this that and that this and there you have it.

Well I could have used Albion as an example but yesterday was only their 3rd best win of the season.
Weird game, take away second 5 minutes of first half and last 5 minutes of the second half and Calvin won the game 61-58.

Assists are a subjective stat, you can be magic or john stockton and kareem or karl malone don't make the shots no assists.   Canonie stole 2 passes and set up 2 breakaways and both didn't score but got to foul line, no assist.  I was surprised at the stat line.

I'm willing to wager that if we took away Calvin's best ten minutes that Albion would have really blown them out.

This has proven to be a tough year for Calvin but they actually have a lot of talent in the freshmen and sophomore classes. I didn't see the early game before Calvin varsity lost to Hope at DeVos, but I'm told the Knights JV team whacked Hope pretty good that night.

Yes, but do remember that Hope has 6 freshmen on their varsity team. I wouldn't hold too much weight in beating Hope's JV team this season.

Weird game, take away first 5 minutes and last 5 minutes of the first half and Hope won the rest of the game 69-47.   Those two tough stretches made it a very long uphill battle all night for Hope who were running on fumes at the end.

Six

The next question should be, how many from varsity did each team play in the JV game at DeVos Fieldhouse?

After that, the next question should be, is this futile attempt to "get" people really worth it.
