Looking way ahead to NCAA seedings

I use 1, 2, 3, 4 in each pod
Olivet would likely be 4, you might be able to get them to a 3 depending on the pod
Hope would probably be a 3 in most pods, a 4 in a really tough one probably
Adrian would likely be 4, maybe a 3 in a weak pod
Trine would be a 4 in any pod
Albion would be a 4 in any pod.

4 means you're playing a host school  right now (Witt, Woo, JCU,  Augustana, WashU, UWPlateville, Steven Pt would be main contenders to host)
3 means you get a 2, those are mostly conference runner-ups from strong conferences like the OAC, NCAC, CCIW, WIAC or conference champs from places like the MWC, HCAC

No matter next weeks winner the MIAA representative will have a pretty tough opening round pairing I would assume.

Does Trine have video archives of their games available?

Can anybody speak to the last time Calvin didn't hit double digit wins? I'm guessing 30+ years?

The Calvin Knights of the 1983/84 season compiled a 5-16 overall record, including a woeful 2-10 ledger in the MIAA and managed to go winless in the friendly surroundings of the Knollcrest Fieldhouse.
Ed Douma took over the program the following season, if I recall correctly.

My All-MIAA selections would be:

Jalen Adams, Olivet
Tracy Edmond, Olivet
Dante Hawkins, Hope
Jason Beckman, Hope
Myles Copeland, Trine
Justin Webster, Adrian

Jalen Adams is the MVP.  Adams needs 24 points at Calvin Saturday to have the highest scoring average in league play since Eric Nordman of Alma in 1987

Second team might be interesting because two or three pretty good players will be left off.

I'd agree on most of that. Adams is also averaging over 10 boards a game, leading the league there too. Oddly enough I'm the only one who actually chants M-V-P at Cutler after he scores, I guess the students are slow to catch on.

The only game I saw Dante play in was at Olivet, and I wasn't impressed. I do realize everyone has an off night, Jalen scored 4 in Spring Arbor so I'm sure they weren't impressed with him either.

I think these are correct. And pretty easy selections for the coaches to make I might add. I can't think of anyone else in the league that would challenge these players.

Adams is easily MVP, but who will win defensive player of the year? Canonie?

Hawkins was first team a year ago, his numbers are almost identical to last year.

I really didn't see a standout defensive player.  The league played a lot of zone this year also.

I feel like it's past due to write a detailed description of the Alma/Adrian game, but here are a couple things from the 67 to 52 win to clinch Adrian's 3rd seed in the playoffs.

It started off ugly. Both teams struggled early. Alma was sloppy committing 10 first half turnovers. Adrian couldn't shoot early on. Under 30 percent from 3 and not much better from within at 40%.

This game showed why I was so frustrated at Adrian's loss to Alma earlier in the year. Adrian are clearly more talented, but still don't always play well. Adrian's best can definitely win the title, but will we see 2 straight games of it?

Curious why we didn't see more Alma's big man Gamble. He was strong against Webster's post play at Alma playing 26 minutes, but he only played 5 minutes at Adrian.

With Adrian's seeding set, I hope that Coach Lindsey spreads minutes for his team. They're starters play so much compared to other starters. They'll need to be fresh in the aggressive playoffs.

Each team had 0 fast break points...so fun!

Congrats to Justin Webster on senior night. He led Adrian with 17 and in this game, he started at the FT line and attacked their big man. It was a much better strategy than his force-fest at Alma.

Could Jalen Adams also win Defensive POY? I don't watch them in person, so I don't see defense as well as the overall game, but D stats are solid. 1st in defensive rebounding, 4th in steals, and (T)12th in blocks. Is he also a good on-the-ball defender?

Adrian's got good defense (usually), but I feel like there aren't too many standouts considering their style of D.

In a year with plenty of ups and downs for Hope, they win a share of the MIAA title. Their 3rd straight crown. I feel dirty saying this, but thank you Calvin.

I went to Calvin this afternoon and it was my first time at Van Noord. It's a very nice facility. At the start of the game I felt like Olivet was playing it very casually, with Jalen and Tracy playing only 16 min each. In the second half Olivet showed up like they meant to play. Calvin was deadly from 3 today hitting just under 50% but during the game it felt like they hit 75%. The 3 ball netted 42 for Calvin and that was clearly the difference in the game.

I think officiating in the MIAA is now a huge problem. This game had what I felt was a lot of blown calls at both ends and then, just as problematically, a switch to a quick whistle at both ends. Olivet was already into the bonus with 15:42 to play in the second, then Calvin proceeded to commit three fouls the rest of the way. Likewise Olivet had 1 (maybe two, I cannot remember when the bench picked up the 2nd via a Tech) at that same point and quickly got Calvin to the bonus as well. It was a game where I think both teams fans were left scratching their head as to what the heck is and isn't going to be called.

I know a lot of people don't like Coach Ernst, I personally think he's great, but he got me laughing in the early part of the first. He pulled McAdoo and as John is walking to a seat coach says 'John you might as well take a seat in the locker room'. A few minutes later he puts him back in the game. I got a good laugh out of that.

I haven't had a problem with the officiating all year. I was actually complimenting these crews for being much improved over what I used to see in this conference. But today's refs at Calvin struggled big time. Let's hope they don't officiate any of the tournament games

Stegeman was fine and stepped it up significantly the last couple years.  The culprits were Hutton and Mulroe.
Great final career game by seniors Canonie and Wilks.

pointlem

Great final games at DeVos before 3001 fans for seniors Luke Dreyer (29 minutes, 14 points, 5 rebounds) and Dante Hawkins (23 points).

Luke had a career day and deserved every minute--so great of Greg Mitchell to display confidence in him during such a close, well-played game. And how we are going to miss Dante and his threading the needle in his drives to the basket. What a pleasure he has been to watch for four years.

Now if the tactician-coach in GR can advise GM on how a team can score 95 rather than 49 points against Olivet . . . should Hope and Olivet both be so fortunate to make past next Friday night. No doubt the Hope men will be doing some scrimmage against zone defenses this week.
