Augustana Pod

Offensive efficiency or Points per possession
Hope             1.11
Augsburg       1.13
Augustana    1.11
Greenville      1.13

These are season averages, these are all pretty good offensive teams for this level but nothing amazing.

Defensive efficiency
Hope             1.08
Augsburg       .98
Augustana     .98
Greenville      1.09

Hope's recent defensive efficiency (last 9 games) is about .99  albeit against no one of this quality.   They've been holding teams at or near their season average during this stretch.  That will be more difficult to do this weekend.   Augsburg and Augustana should be considered good defensive teams.

Pace or possessions per game
Hope             74.1
Augsburg       69.5
Augustana    69.5
Greenville      111.4  ----that's insane

Anything under 70 is considered slow the last couple of years.  What a contrast the second game will be, but I imagine Augustana finds a way to keep that down around 100 or so.

Four Factors

eFG%          Off             Def
Hope                54.5                  53.8
Augsburg         54.6                  50.5
Augustana       53.3                  48.3
Greenville         52.6                  62.5

Good defensive teams stand out here, Greenville's 62.5 on defense is the highest eFG% I recall seeing.  Other thing interesting is Greenville really doesn't score at a higher rate or more frequently than a normal offense.

Rebounding
          %Off rebounds   Opp%Off rebounds

Hope           29.6            32.2
Augsburg  28.2            29.1
Augustana  36.1            30.2
Greenville    35.4            40.0

Regarding Hope/Augsburg neither is great on the offensive glass and both fall short of strong on the other end.  Augustana is pretty strong here and Greenville is surprisingly good at getting offensive rebounds but not much on the defensive end.  That's an even worse number considering their poor defensive stats.  They basically give up a lot of points easily and then give you a second chance at it often. (biffed layup misses and putbacks?)

FT Rate
Hope            37.6             34.1
Augsburg      29.9            27.6
Augustana   38.0             35.6
Greenville     26.2             40.6

Something has to give between Hope/Augsburg.  Augsburg doesn't get to the line frequently and doesn't put their opponent at the line often.  Hope does a lot of both.  So Ft's tilting one way or the other against the norm would be putting pressure on either squad.   Augustana might shoot 60 Ft's Friday night.

Turnover Rate

TO rate          Opp TO rate          Margin
Hope                      17.2                17.7                      .5
Augsburg               15.4                 21.1                      5.7
Augustana             18.7                19.9                      1.2
Greenville               14.9                26.5                     11.6

Augsburg's numbers suggest maybe a little bit a of pressure team.  They certainly don't turn the ball over a lot and anything over 20% TO rate on defense is pretty good.  I should point out here that Augsburg did play two games vs a system team (Macalester) and the MIAC has 4 very bad turnover rate teams who average over 20% themselves so their defensive turnover rate might be a bit inflated.  I didn't look at individual games.   I'd still surmise Augsburg's defense creates a lot of turnovers.  Hope's been neither bad or good here, perfectly average (which might actually be bad in the NCAA's.)    Another fascinating number from Greenville, and Augustana isn't exactly great at not turning the ball over.  I imagine Greenville doesn't turn it over a lot because its 2 or 3 passes then shoot.

Augusburg and Hope are pretty even in a lot of areas but I think Augsburg's a clear favorite.  I did a 100 game simulation on masseyratings.com and it went 69-31 to Augsburg and many weren't very close.  Its really will we see the Hope team of the first 17 or 18 games or the Hope team of the last 4 weeks and will that matter.

Augustana is going to probably beat Greenville handily but it will be interesting for about 20 minutes I'd guess.  The Vikings have to be big favorites to move on to next weekend.  I'll enjoy the 2nd game if only for the novelty.

Any news on where Carson Meulenberg is going next year? Has he chosen yet?

You could also say will we see the Hope team of February 14th or the Hope team of February 24th.

I would definitely give some Adrian information in terms of recruiting, if I had some. Based on your knowledge of Hope recruits, how would you suggest I find information on future Adrian Bulldogs? Do any of you (Sac?) have any information on Adrian recruits?

The best way to check or find out is probably twitter.

Bulldog30, I found one kid via twitter (https://twitter.com/blackwell_03/status/947235983925436416) and then went and found this link:

Brock Blackwell- 6'3" G from Shelbyville, IN: appears to shoot fairly well, and that is nice size at the guard spot. Hard to see much on him, however.

The majority of anything I find comes from twitter these days.  Some from basketball specific twitter accounts and some are just completely random retweets that I happen to catch.

Most AAU programs have a twitter of some kind and are free to post about their kids commitments.  There are 2 or 3 really good Indiana high school basketball sites I follow, and a couple from Michigan.

Otherwise I actually make very little effort in this area and still find a lot.

Sac,

Would you be willing to share the Twitter handles of those AAU accounts?

Thanks Sac, Hup, and Winifred. I'll follow a few.

Watch out MIAA!!! In all seriousness, the highlight videos from...how should I put this...secondary players always make me laugh. Gotta love a great slow-mo shot of a underneath bounce pass for a lay up. But perhaps I shouldn't joke as I would love a highlight video of me in high school showing my one-handed bounce passes, and-ones, and that one sorta-dunk I had my senior year.

6'2" G Tyler George announced his commitment to Hope this evening. The FHC senior is leading the Rangers to a very nice season. Scoring nearly 20 a game last time I checked. He joins:

6'6" F Jeff Bikus
6'5" G/F Connor Evenhouse

...and anyone else I couldn't find quickly on Twitter.

I'm sure someone else can give you a more complete list, but just thought I'd note that it seems like Hope is getting some good ones so far.

Nate Davis athletic 6-2 slashing guard from Rochester Stoney Creek is headed to Hope, chose over Kalamazoo and U. Chicago.

Alma has a recent commitment from another good athlete, 6-4 Mason Gardner from Boyne City.

Both Tyler George and Nate Davis cracked the Detroit Free Press Next 60. I believe the only MIAA player on last year's list was Preston Granger.
