Calvin gets first win over Cornerstone since 2012

Interesting game for Calvin in breaking a pattern of big leads in the first half  in most games, then losing in the second half.  Calvin did have a big lead of 48 to 32 at halftime.  Then they did proceed to lose almost all of it the second half to the point of Cornerstone  being only 3 points behind with 8 minutes to go.  But, unlike other games, Calvin then was able to pull away and score the crucial points when they needed them toward the end of the second half.  They accomplished that by receiving more scoring from a bigger number of players.  Bos, Bykerk, Amoros-Gutierrez, Warners, and even the freshman Harrison all had important points.  Going into this game, I found it discouraging that there seemed to be a pattern developing of leading by a big margin and shooting great in the first half followed by running out of gas in the second half.  Part of that pattern seemed to be depending too much on two or three scorers who eventually ran out of gas.  It appeared to be going that way against Cornerstone until they suddenly seemed to hit a second gear and pull away.  Some important rest for starters at crucial times seemed to make the difference.
With their usual number of turnovers they would have lost this game.  But, Calvin worked hard to protect the ball and only committed 5 turnovers tonight.

I noticed Caden Collins playing for Hope tonight. Was he called up from the JV to replace someone?

Error on the live stats. Collins did not get pulled up, should have read #20 Jake Honer

Thank you for clearing that up!!!

sheesh, Neb Wes has 10 made 3's already, shooting 67% from 3.

Nice to see Calvin handle both cross town rivals.  Calvin 85 AQ 63.  Guess they really did learn some things playing those 3 CCIW schools.

Really thought Olivet would have faired better. I was expecting a win vs Greenville and a better fight against NWU. Maybe if the games were switched, they have had a better shot at NWU. I suppose playing back to back nights with the Greenville game first will always effect your second game. Disappointing.

Was in a coma from the football game at noon, so didn't watch Hope's game vs Cornerstone. Another 2nd game in a back-to-back where they don't get much scoring. Looking at the box score, the trio (beckman, granger, Lewis) obviously had an off night...  something that worried me before the season. When one of the three has an off night, who would step up in their place to provide some scoring? Granger and Beckman both weren't their usually selves and nobody else really contributed. Obviously Hope needs to find some more scoring off the bench. Teddy and Dennis are more complimentary players than scorers (although both are very capable of having a good night). It is very early in the season so there is plenty of time to figure that out. But someone needs to be that spark off the bench. Especially if they want to be a 2nd day team in the NCAA tournament (and win)

I only saw the second half of the Hope game with Cornerstone, but I wondered if Vander Sluis had a lot more to do with "off night" by Granger.  That guy is a load!  Beckman clearly had an off night.

After this past weekend, it looks like the coaches prediction of Trine as the likley champ looks quite likely.  They seem to have been the most consistent with an established mix of experienced players.  Olivet could have raised some questions about their reliability.  What ever happened to the player who was division I star quality?  I never hear about him playing.  Hope and Cavin look good at times and weak at others.  If I could take this weekend as an accurate indicator of where the teams stand, it would really look good for Calvin.  But the weeks before show a lot of inconsistency.  Calvin has a lot of young players or players new to the rotation that look good at times and show their lack of experience often.

After these two wins for Calvin I am much more optimistic about how they will fare going forward than I have been for quite some time.  Like others I have often thought that Calvin's problem did not stem from lack of talent, but more from lacking self confidence, and understanding that they are capable of playing with the big boys.  Not sure who deserves the credit for the marked improvement in how Calvin responded on Fri., and Sat. night,.  Both nights the players and the coaches all seemed to be on the same page, and carried and conducted themselves like they were having fun playing the games, and expected to win.

He was their leading scorer against Neb. Wesleyan.  http://miaa.org/sports/mbkb/2018-19/boxscores/20181124_fs94.xml?view=boxscore

heard a couple things that lead me to believe he had been dealing with a knee issue.

Given the frenetic pace that NebWes prefers, I doubt that it makes any difference whether you play the Prairie Wolves before or after Greenville.

He also lead them vs Greenville with 31 and 20 rebounds.

Yes, I would say Sluis and Cornerstones overall length was an issue for Hope. Beckman scoring below his average had a lot to do with being guarded by Riley Costen who is 6'5".

I watched both of CUs games this weekend and they looked like two different teams. Friday they looked like they were all in a turkey hangover. Saturday they played great D and efficient O, and looked to be in mid season form. Yes, I realize who they were playing is a part of that, and Calvin played a very good game, but I'd put up some serious $$ (were I a betting man) that CU would beat Calvin in a rematch.
