Calvin 82  Hope 80  F

Really good game start to finish, one bad 5-7 min. stretch at the start of the 2nd half for Hope was all it took for Calvin to seize control.  Couldn't quite reach the summit with the rally that always comes for these two.  Hope's not a great come from behind team but they've had two close rally's two weeks in a row now fall just short.

For DeVries FT's at the end that was about as loud as I think DeVos Fieldhouse has been since that Illinois Wesleyan game in 2012.  Fun ending, one of these days that last second prayer will go in.

Hope:  Lewis 24, Granger 23, Beckman 19, Towns 11
Calvin:  DeVries 18, Bos 17, Bykerk 16, Gutierrez 14, Walter 12

today's results
Calvin 82  Hope 80
Trine 94  Adrian 53   Adrian had 11 points at halftime, only after hitting a 3 at the basically the buzzer.
Albion 88  Alma 77
Kzoo 82  Olivet 81

Standings with +/-    (+1 for road win, -1 for home loss) w/remaining games

Trine      8-1      +3   (@Oli, @Cal, ALB, @Kzo, ALM)
Albion    7-2      +2    (ADR, @Kzo, @Trn, @Cal, HPE)
Olivet     6-3      +1   (TRN, @Alm, @Adr, @Hpe, CAL)
Calvin    5-4        0    (@Alm, TRN, @Kzo, ALB, @Oli)
Hope      4-5       -1    (@Kzo, @Adr, ALM, OLI, @Alb)
Kzoo      3-6        0     (HPE, ALB, CAL, TRN, @Adr)
Alma      3-6       -1    (CAL, OLI, @Hpe, ADR, @Trn)
Adrian    0-9      -4     (@Alb, HPE, OLI, @Alm,  KZO)

Pretty significant loss by Olivet, long way to go and teams are getting better but that one's going to be a tough one to overcome.  Lots can still happen but the odds of the tournament being hosted by Olivet just went down significantly.  However a win Monday night vs Trine would give Olivet a potentially big tie-breaker over Trine.

Kzoo is now a player for a tournament spot and a good schedule in front of them.   Potentially could be a couple wild weeks in the zoo.

Calvin has the big inside track to at least the 4 seed and can now reach the 3 seed on their own I think, tie breaks might factor there.  Hope has a really big week of 3 must win games.  Don't think they want to go into the final week needing a win or two to secure a tournament spot.

The template of Win remaining Home games and games w/Kzoo/Adrian.   This is now very unfair to Kzoo but I'm sticking with it at least another day or two.

Trine     11-3
Albion   10-4
Olivet     9-5
Calvin    8-6
Hope      8-6
Alma     6-8

Kzoo  5-9  but sure looks like 6 or 7 might be within reach.

Obviously couldn't watch this pre-game being at the game but Pat and Dave did a nice courtside pre-game show.

She was awesome! Everyone we had on was great. I don't get to interview people much anymore, and especially not for D3hoops.com, so it was fun to get to ask some questions.

Finally had a chance to finish the feature that was rattling around in my head yesterday:

Really well done - both the feature and the live pregame (which I finally had a chance to watch).

Watched the end of the Kazoo win and still had the video on during the handshake line. Looks like a major scuffle started off camera to the left, as eventually multiple players from both teams are seen back on screen posturing as if they are ready to fight. Looks like order was restored before any punches were thrown.

I wouldn't expect anything more to come of this, sounds like it was a whole lot of jawing, pushing and describing each others mama.  But........this could have been potentially serious as there were fans, and parents of players getting involved on the court.  Kudos to both staffs, particularly Kzoo's for getting the teams apart.

Sac I was sitting at the end of the court when this developed. I think the real reason this didn't escalate was the cooler heads of some of the deeper bench players for both teams. I saw guys still in warmups trying to part the two sides. That's what kept this from being a brawl.

After taking a weekend to reflect, my thoughts on the 200th meeting are...

1. How many times is Hope sputtering on offense for 5 minutes going to be the difference in their games this season? Very frustrating to watch unfold as a Hope fan. It's like groundhog day, you know it's happening because you've seen this script play out before....

2. Teddy Ray is a REALLY good defender. It's crazy to think that NEXT season will be a rebuilding year, with the way this season has played out. But with Jason, Teddy, and Dennis graduating, it's going to be interesting. Preston and Riley give me hope that it won't be as bad as it seems. :/

3. Alex Bos' bow and arrow thing is the douchiest thing I've seen in a while. I'm a little surprised KVS allows it. Sure, he made Hope pay for doubling DeVries every time he touched the ball... But there are a million better ways to celebrate going 4 for 4 from 3 than that.

4. It's looking likely we will get a 3rd game between these two in the MIAA tournament. That's assuming Hope takes care of Kzoo, Adrian, and Alma this week. If they don't, not making the MIAA is a very real possibility.

5. Congrats calvin on a hard fought, good win on your rivals court.

That's a bit harsh. There are tons of kids around the country who do that exact celebration. Shooting a 3pt. arrow is far from "douchy" and its nice to see a coach let a player express themselves in the moment. If you hit 4 threes in a row against Hope at Hope in the biggest rivalry in D3, you can celebrate any way you want short of actual vulgarity.

Except he did it after the very first 3 to open the game...  ::)

I've lost count of how many players I've seen do the bow-and-arrow gesture this season. Heck, I see scrubs at the end of the bench doing it when a teammate hits a trey.

I'd be much more ok with a teammate doing it for you. Doing it for yourself for every three you make is just cocky and showboating... especially for a player that averages 5 points a game.

There is a time when stuff like that is too far and there is a time when it is just fine. It was just fine on Saturday. I even got a kick out of it.

I am all about proper sportsmanship and proper behavior when the situation calls for it ... this was nothing in the grand scheme of things. It was towards the Calvin student-section and his own bench. Players do this all the time and as was pointed out, burying those shots to start the game was worthy of some allowances.

It was other behavior in the game by both sides that should be looked at. Not to take away from the game, but if you have a problem with this than you must have hated the jawing back and forth and finger wagging at each other. Or getting in each other's way as often as possible after a whistle (which finally resulted in a technical foul).

None of that took away from the game ... nor did the bow-and-arrow celebrations. Use the term you did to describe it is over the top as well.
