I think it should have been a foul. By that, I mean I would be aggrieved if the shoe were on the proverbial other foot. The airborne shooter is to be allowed to land and I do not think Beckman was properly afforded that ability by the Calvin defenders.

It is true, though, that the referees were relatively averse to calling fouls the entire night. I don't think either side entered the bonus in either half. I can appreciate the consistency in this regard even if perhaps a foul would have been justified in this instance.

(I will still argue that a foul was not justified at the end of the Alma game earlier in the year.)

Beckman jumped forward on his shot attempt, trying to draw contact.  I thought it was a good no call.

Play starts at 1:30:13. I don't see him jumping into contact at all. I don't know why I'm arguing this side, however. :)

Here's a different angle if interested that Wood TV8 had , play starts about the 50 second mark:   https://www.woodtv.com/sports/ncaa/ncaa-hoops/calvin-wins-again-to-end-hope-s-season/1797855870

sure

When I saw it from the livestream I thought it was a foul. After seeing a few different angles I lean towards letting it go, but obviously I am biased. If you have instagram you can look at the Calvin knights page and watch their "story" to see a different angle.

Instagram angle isn't good. It was a foul, the Calvin player did not let him land. I would be more upset though if Hope was a borderline Pool C team. I agree with HopeConvert, they were never close to being really good.

In all, I thought it was a very well refereed game. They let a lot slide, but they were consistent with that all game. Like the regular season meeting, Hope went back to driving hard to the basket with their undersized senior guard. Yes he was hacked, yes you should have expected him to be, and yes you should have expected the refs to swallow their whistle... In both cases, I would have much rather seen them draw up a play to find an open Hackert, Beckman, Lewis, or Ray for a game winning 3.

Next year's starting 5? Lewis, Hackert, Dietz, Granger, Vree/Gamm...

I'm less concerned with the fact that it wasn't called a foul than the fact that a wide-open Preston Granger is bypassed. Granted, there may not have been time, but Hope was whiffing on open pick-and-rolls all night; that is, when they were bothering to set solid screens. The Calvin camera angle was propitious for viewing Hope's largely non-existent screening. I regard that as a pretty serious issue.

5 ways to defend ball screens
https://www.stack.com/a/defend-ball-screens

Calvin hard hedged and blitzed all night, they did a nice job on ball screens.

I watched the second half specifically paying attention to the way Hope set screens. They rarely did, and when they did, they were soft. Calvin had no trouble going over the top of screens on those rare occasions when they did happen. There were a couple of pick and roll opportunities where Towns was open and they missed him. There was an effective ball screen outside the arc around halfway through the second half which yielded an immediate bucket, and then Hope didn't do it again.
One Mississippi, Two Mississippi...

Nothing like some good ole fashioned Hope/Calvin controversy to stir up the message boards. 2 new pages of material to read! If all goes as planned I'll get to stay and watch Calvin/Trine at 3pm. I'll be at the 1pm game for sure.

1:14 is a great example of two teams getting what they want on screen action.  Watch Granger initially, the way Calvin hard hedges, then watch Beckman take advantage of the space created in the defense.

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:15  Hope's next possession after a really iffy over the back call on DeWitt.  Hope uses slightly different action but they get the ballscreen, hard hedge from Calvin and the same 15 ft jumper from Beckman from the other side.

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:15:35  after a Calvin miss, Hope's transition is thwarted.    Hope runs Beckman in a circle and gets 3 different screens, the first is probably to induce a switch that doesn't come the second is less of a screen and more of a bump to make the defender chase further, the 3rd from Ray gets Beckman open for a 3rd straight 15 footer with an assist from DeVries who kind of pushed Ray into the defenders path.

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:16   fourth straight possession, Hope runs a "motion" I think, Ray sets a screen for Lewis, unfortunately Lewis goes to early and doesn't give Teddy time to set a good screen.  Lewis gets his shot blocked by Thad Shydammit who went over the screen.  That ones on Lewis who didn't allow the screen to be set.

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:18:35  We're down to 3:03 to play and Hope's 5th straight possession, let's see if they go ball screen........yes.   Rays sets a screen for Beckman, Calvin switches here for the first time in a long time and gets DeVries on Beckman who pulls up on a well defended 18 footer.  If Jason see this tape again I bet he'll wish he drove left past DeVries for what might be an open layup but Calvin has two guys lane right in waiting, so maybe not.

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:20  After giving up a 5th offensive rebound in 3 minutes Hope comes down now trailing by 1 and runs.......ballscreen for Beckman.  Calvin hard hedges and Beckman ends up 1v1 with Werners who does a great job.  Beckman kicks out to recycle, the play ends with Hackert and Granger miss communicating for a big turnover at a bad time.

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:23:20   After a Calvin miss and Hope timeout, Hope initially goes ball screen for Lewis, Calvin I'd say blitzes this very well Lewis has to dump off to Beckman who dumps it in to Granger for a rare post-up.  Granger maybe panics a touch and takes a well defended shot that gets blocked.  He had Towns on the elbow who's certainly capable of hitting that shot.  Guessing Hope had at least 12 on the shot clock too

1:24  after a little runner by Carlos A-G Hope comes quickly up court, Granger is in the process of screening for Beckman but Beckman sees a cavernous lane and attacks it, splits the defense and gets the bucket and-one.

1:29  Calvin's just scored to go up two.  Beckman goes coast to coast never really allowing for a screen to develop even though Granger is attempting one at the top of the circle.  This wasn't a great decision, Hope is sort of lucky to get another crack.

1:31  After the timeout, Hope runs its final play.  Beckman is third to touch the ball.  Granger isn't really in good screening position and does a nice job avoiding a potential illegal screen.  Beckman unfortunately is getting the ball facing away from the basket and can't see that his man has not switched on to Granger.  Pretty sure this play is exactly how it was designed, your 5th year Sr PG having a great game getting a shot in space. Could he have dumped it to PG, maybe with another second to go but it would have been tight with the clock.  Following the shot Beckman is hit with more force than any of the three previous shooting fouls in the game which is not the least bit ironic.

This is the most polite that this room has ever been when it's gone into Zapruder mode, that's for sure. It's probably because we have Hope fans disagreeing with each other and Calvin fans disagreeing with each other, which makes for a startling novelty the day after a tight Calvin/Hope contest. ;)

Here's another really good one.  Granger screens for Beckman and actually switches the side mid-screen and catches Walter off balance looking for the switch on the other side.  Beckman gets probably his easiest score of the half  A fairly advanced thing and also maybe lucky it wasn't called illegal

https://livestream.com/calvin-college/events/8446961/videos/187697796
1:11:18

next possession here's Calvin running ball screen for Carlos A-G.  Watch how Hope hard hedges and Calvin almost gets a great look but Ray maybe does enough to put the shot off.  This is good basketball by both teams.

A little earlier in the 2nd half,  Hope baseline out of bounds.  Granger plants himself on the elbow.  Ray undercuts the screen going between Beckman and Granger, his defender goes behind Granger and bear hugs him ? ? ?   That's baffling to me if anyone can explain why DeVries goes behind Granger please do I'd love to hear it.

Rays action is probably designed to look like a play for him when its really a play for Beckman who takes Granger's make like a tree screen and misses a 15 footer.  Watch Walter switch on Ray opening space for Beckman.  Carlos A-G takes a step backwards on Ray's action as well.

Early 2nd half, ball screen off the inbounds.  Hope runs a "slip screen" here, this isn't a bad screen this is actually a technique all teams use throughout any game when a team start cheating on their hedging.  This is "advanced" basketball.   Beckman might have missed the pass here or just didn't see it develop well enough.

By now it should be kind of evident Calvin was hedging hard with its taller players, a good idea really as Hope's guards would have a harder time completing that pass and the reason you hedge in the first place is to make that pass hard.

following possession, Hope goes ballscreen for Beckman.  Calvin hedges pretty hard but Granger slips out this time to the three point line.  And here in lies one of Hope's biggest problems, not having a big that can knock down the three.  The obvious play here is for Beckman to kick out to Granger on the slip for the 3 but PG doesn't have that shot.  Instead Beckman has to create his own space and shot, which he does.   He also had Granger trailing after the up and under which he probably does not see.

Gonna be salty for a minute.  This possession ends in a jump ball.  Granger/DeVries and Beckman.  Beckman's the agressive player here but watch Granger get a lecture from the official.  A while later in the game Granger takes a foul from DeVries, DeVries comes over to say something to Granger, Ray gets in between them  and DeVries thens start yaking with fans in the front row.  Granger gets the lecture.  Had to deal with that BS all year.

53:45
Hope goes ballscreen for Beckman, with Towns this time.  Towns slips and Beckman beats his man one on one.  One of the few times Calvin didn't switch or hedge

TUAngola

So tomorrow...how many are making the trip to Angola?  I'll be there all day...will take in all 4 games.  Please note, that the games are divided into sessions.  Session 1 is the Mens semi finals, Session 2 is the Womens semi finals, and Session 3 is both finals on Saturday.  Tickets for each of the sessions tomorrow are $7 a piece for general admission (MIAA students are free with ID), and Saturday is $10 which includes both games.  They will "clear the building" between the Mens and Womens semifinals tomorrow as they are ticketed separately.  However you can purchase all the sessions at one time so you don't have to stand in line before each session.

If your planning on eating out here are some of my favorites in the area:

Buffet - Bon Appetit, located in the Whitney Commons on Trine's campus.  Student dining but also open to public as well.  Within walking distance of MTI Center

Italian - Caruso's (the best breadsticks ever, they come in a tray sitting in melted butter...yum)

Mexican - Acapulco Grill

Steaks - The Hatchery

Seafood - Captain's Cabin (Crooked Lake - also great Prime Rib)

Pizza - Monument Pizza (on the circle -great flatbreads)

Chinese - The Rice Bowl (close to campus, decor is very dated, but don't be deceived, food is excellent)

Deli- Sutton's Deli (on the circle)

Salad Bar - Ruby Tuesday

American - 6 Autumns

Sports Bar - Buffalo Wild Wings (Wings Etc is new, but haven't tried it yet)

Coffee - Five Lakes Coffee

Breakfast - Village Kitchen (dated, but can't beat their prices)

You can Google each for websites and addresses.

To add on to TUAngola. Pizza King in Indiana is the best pizza I've ever had. There are a few on this board that would also agree
