I was never meaning to suggest the Calvin job wouldn't draw interest. I was only saying that it's a big ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as to who the top candidates might be or who would even be interested if we're talking about people without a prior connection to the school.

Actually heard John Ross for the women's program a few weeks ago.  Sam Hargraves is the obvious Calvin grad in the room, I think there are one or two others at the D2 or high school level that would be interested.  Maybe even AD Jim Timmer.

Hargraves (Alma), Christner (Waynesburg), and Sall (Northern Michigan) are the obvious Calvin grads that stick out to me in the D3/D2 coaching ranks.
Other D3 coaches with (West) Michigan roots or Christian-faith ties could likely apply as well.
I don't know the High School scene at all.

It's not easy for coaches to make the leap from high school to college, "even" at the D3 level.

John Ross appeared on the men's bball coaching  scene last year as the season started.  While no one commented on it at the time it may be more than it first appeared to be.  I doubt he would go back to the women's program at Calvin when he left it 3 years ago.

I don't fully know his involvement with the MBB team. He's listed as a coach, but during games he stood by the water cooler rather than with the rest of the coaches. I doubt he's what they're looking for in the next MBB coach.

Brings up a good point will Calvin be looking for someone with college experience or ....university experience.

That's John's nature; quiet, unassuming, off to the sideline kind of guy.  He understands there is just one head coach and you don't really need 5 or 6 empty suits sitting on the bench.  If you watched John coach you saw him stand throughout the game and usually down near the water cooler.  First time I saw him in action as assistant varsity coach was at an early season tournament game at Aquinas a couple years ago. KVS asked Ross to take a seat on the bench but Ross declined and then thought he might as well make himself useful and so he made sure every player had their water bottle when they came out of the game.  Good guy, very likable, no ego, wouldn't fit in a nearby D3 school.  Excellent track record.  But, with all that said, I think it will be someone else.

Jim Timmer can't afford to hire another Chuck Winkleman.

If you wanted a proven winner, great recruiter, someone to energize your student fan base, build a relationship with season ticket holders and spice up the rivalry; Matt Neil could be your man.

I was thinking the same thing about a Matt but the Calvin at Hope game will need to be played at the Civic Center since Matt can't set foot on campus.

He would be a great hire.  Is Calvin willing to pay to get this caliber of coach?

Matt was at the 90's reunion at De Vos in January.

I'm sure Calvin would love for VanderWal to be be interested in the job. But Jon's in a successful position at Marietta and might not be looking to make a move, no matter what Calvin had to offer.

What better way for a potential coach to start building a relationship with players who will be back next year as well meet potential recruits.
The road is already paved for a smooth transition. :)
