Any real rumors about Calvin's next coach?

Jim Timmer, AD, said today that the process is further along on the women's side than the men's. He said they would be bringing some candidates in for the women's job soon.  The men's team candidates later.

Timmer also said that Wisconsin-Osh Kosh and Wheaton will be coming to Calvin next year.

Does Calvin not want a 2019 recruiting class? Not to mention AAU ball begins this week (big tourney right in Calvin's backyard, no less).  The lack of urgency during this process has been really disappointing.

Seems to me if they had their guy, he'd be there now. Why postpone with 2019 seniors waiting to make decisions and 2020, 2021, etc recruits playing AAU this month?

And if you don't have your guy - why are you waiting to bring candidates on campus? Not starting your new coach off well in terms of year one recruiting.

I'm not in the know, and maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised soon... but for now I'm disappointed with how I've seen this play out. And that's to say nothing of the women's opening... which has been known about for what, 4 months?  :(

Relax.  In 1996 when Ed. D. was let go it was mid-summer before we knew KVS was coming.  The fr. that came in that fall won a banner 4 years later. We should be so lucky this time. :)

Could it be argued that no matter who the coach was that class was coming to Calvin? (real question because I don't know)  As talked about previously on this board Calvin no longer "just gets" the same kind of talent from the local Christian high schools. Recruiting today is a whole different animal compared to the late 1990's. For better or worse high school players want to feel sought after, they need that face to face time with the coaches, and want to be able to post on Twitter and Instagram who they are "blessed to receive and offer from". Just feels like this coach will be coming in a little behind the 8 ball.

When Matt Neil was let go from Hope a few years back, didn't it take some time for Hope to name Mitchell as his replacement? Didn't Hope remain without a coach into the summer? I say this to show that Hope still had some solid recruits that year. Calvin will be fine. The assistant coaches will chip in to recruiting and I'm sure KVS is still helping out and reassuring recruits that all will be fine.

Some people believe this is easy and can be done overnight. Getting the right person takes time and should not be taken lightly. I'd rather they take their time and ensure they have the right person than be put in this same situation 2-3 years from now (like what happened with the women's team). That would be much worse for the program than taking a few extra weeks/months to find the right guy.

Good comments.  Additionally the cupboard isn't bare. Any coach hired will be happy to work with the current group and could take them a long way.  Some good recruits would just be a bonus.

It was actually a very weak recruiting class that year.  Dante Hawkins and Luke Dreyer were the only players that ever made the varsity team from that class.

Fair, but it's hard to call a class with a player of Hawkins quality weak. He had a pretty solid career. The quality from the classes around that class certainly made up for one "down" year.

Dante's mom worked at Hope. As far as recruitments go, it was probably one of the easiest ones in Hope history.

Matt Neil had recruited Cody Stuive, Alex Eidson, Chad Carlson, Ben Gardner, Sam Otto, Keith Brushwyler, Harrison Blackledge, and Brock Benson the previous 2 years. Those 8 players would be juniors and sophomores in Mitchell's first year.  He had put together back to back recruiting classes that had the potential to win a National Championship.  His recruiting allowed Hope to take their time.
Calvin has some talent on their roster but they don't have the luxury of missing out on recruits this year.  If KVS truly "retired" I believe Jim Timmer would have known that before the end of the season and been ready to go when the announcement was made.
