Hope posted its last men's basketball job opening on May 19 of 2014 just 5 days after Matt Neil and Hope parted ways on May 14.  Greg Mitchell was hired July 3.  Hope's deposit date is on or around April 30 every year.   I remember a few comments on this board that year about how "slow" Hope's process may or may not have been.

Hope for the most part already knew its recruiting class that year by the time Neil departed.  Hope had put a lot of eggs in the Kyle Steigenga basket losing out to Cornerstone, that was known on April 19.  Luke Diekevers from Jenison had committed to Hope in April but changed his mind and went to Concordia-Ann Arbor with his girlfriend, may or may not have been Neil departure related.   I seem to remember a PG from the Chicago area that went somewhere in South Dakota as well but I might have my years mixed up and that was also pre-Neil departing.  There were rumors of a couple others but nothing ever confirmed, guesses might be easy if you can find old rosters.

Hope's Fr. JV the next Winter ended up being
Jake Kozlowski -  ended up playing football for 3 or 4 years
Luke Dreyer -  3 year varsity player
Luke Bauss
Josias Sanon
Christian Butler - became a student assistant
Austin Gutting
Danny Kosiba
Connor Davis  -  got a 2nd year on JV maybe(?)

Dante Hawkins was a 4 year varsity player

A lot of the recruiting gap comes down to whether there's a consistent assistant continuing to do the work.  If I recall, pretty recently, Calvin didn't have a full-time assistant.  Has that changed?

When Matt Neil was let go from Hope a few years back, didn't it take some time for Hope to name Mitchell as his replacement? Didn't Hope remain without a coach into the summer? I say this to show that Hope still had some solid recruits that year. Calvin will be fine. The assistant coaches will chip in to recruiting and I'm sure KVS is still helping out and reassuring recruits that all will be fine.

Some people believe this is easy and can be done overnight. Getting the right person takes time and should not be taken lightly. I'd rather they take their time and ensure they have the right person than be put in this same situation 2-3 years from now (like what happened with the women's team). That would be much worse for the program than taking a few extra weeks/months to find the right guy.

I don't disagree with any of this, and don't think it can be or should be rushed. But it hasn't been "overnight", it's been over a month. I 100% agree that it's more important to get it right than do it quickly - my point is that it took weeks to even post the job, and from a post earlier this week, sounds like it's still a ways off before they're bringing candidates on campus.

Maybe that's placing too much stock in Timmer's comments relayed here, and he is maintaining some confidentiality through the process, I don't know. But from where I sit (uninformed and not in the loop) it seems like this has not been handled with much urgency. Jim Timmer has to have known this day was coming, and I guess I just assumed he would have a "list" ready to go of who he might be reaching out to.

As long as Jim doesn't have any sailboat trips with no cell-phone reception scheduled soon.

From what I gather, the process is intentionally deliberate. This is a real search rather than just a targeted pursuit. I don't know how that is playing out in terms of candidates but if I had to guess (and this is a pure guess), this allows for a mix of people who have been reached out to directly while leaving an opening for people to enter the mix who may not have been on the radar for one reason or another.

Maybe this ends with a "why didn't they hire him months ago?" but maybe it also ends with a "who?" It's possible either decision ends up the right decision.

If I remember correctly, when K made its coaching change a few years ago I don't think the final decision was made until the summer. The timeline may have been different for us in terms of when the search started, but we did bring candidates on campus to meet with players, run through practice type situations, ask for player feedback, etc.
I don't know if Calvin and Alma are doing the exact same thing, but I'm sure they're doing their due diligence. I guarantee you the assistants are picking up the slack on recruiting.

Can't disagree with anything said. Obviously the timeline is a little different with Hope a few years ago to Calvin now. Just because the job wasn't posted doesn't mean that Calvin wasn't calling potential replacements to gauge interest. I guess we will have to wait and see how this affects the recruiting class this year. As realist mentioned, the cupboard isn't dry. The new coach has a solid core to work with.

John Ross (former Calvin women's coach) was listed among the asst. men's coaches this past season.  I have no inside information ,but after following Calvin bball for over 50 years, I doubt this was a coincidence.  He was in a position to meet, and then follow up with potential recruits.  As for most of the asst's they may or may not want to work with the new coach, and they may not have a say in the decision.
With the changes at Calvin since 1996 the pool of viable candidates is probably much larger now than it was then.

Ziggy is correct about when the new coach is named it may be a repeat of 96 when few Calvin people had ever heard of KVS (who) let alone knew much about him.

Really all Timmer has to do is walk into VanNoord Arena for no cell phone reception. ;)

Just FYI

Kzoo parted ways with Eric Dougal on April 28, 2016 and hired Jay Smith on June 21, 2016.

I don't have when Kzoo posted that job opening.

Former League MVP Jalen Adams has signed with the Hobart Huskies in Australia. He is not showing up on the online roster yet but they have video of him on their Facebook page.

Ha, very true.  That is one thing Michigan Stadium and VanNoord have in common.
