Disgusting loss for Calvin at Anderson. Did not feel to me like the Ravens were the better team but Calvin allowed themselves to be taken out of the game and distracted by officiating when they simply could have taken care of business.

Four technicals called on Calvin. (That must be a new record for the Knights.)
Calvin completely dominated the boards and Thad Shymanski and Derrick DeVries carried the offensive load.
But the Knights' defense was MIA.
Interesting that Owen Handy was tossed at Calvin last year for complaining about the officiating.
Bill Sall was tossed during the final timeout of this one.
Hoosier justice?

What a difference a year makes.
Calvin 4 techs, 1 coach ejection on the year
Olivet 0 techs, 0 coach ejections, 0 timeouts taken to stare at the officials.

Though in fairness to Calvin, Olivet has played less games.

Upon further review (of the box score), it appears Calvin's Alex Bos was tagged with his second technical foul of the game with time expired, giving the Knights a tab of five technicals for the game (two on Bos and three on the bench). Usually the officials are quick to exit the floor at the final buzzer, but this was one hard-working crew.  :-* (Since the game had ended with an Anderson victory, evidently there was no need to take the two free throws.) It must have been an interesting bus ride back to Grand Rapids.  :-X

Somewhat related to Anderson  ;), Kzoo recently beat Anderson and Bluffton after a tough loss to Ripon and a Manchester game they really should have won. I've watched a fair amount of their games, and I'm encouraged by Coach Giard's offense. Lots of DHOs and ball screens. Turnover numbers seem to be down from previous years, and Tanner Blyly is really playing well so far. Also, they're taking a lot of 3s and still getting to the line. I like that. There's work to be done on the defensive end, though--teams are shooting almost 50% from the floor, and if Kzoo wants to beat Albion or Calvin this year they'll need to significantly improve their rebounding.

Who received technicals and what were they for?

The box score indicates two for Alex Bos (the second with time expired) and three "team" technicals. Two were given to Coach Sall. Your guess is as good as mine as to who got the other one. I think it's fair to say the technicals came as a result of persistent dissent over the quality and consistency of the officials' calls.  Seemed as if at least two or three of the technicals came during time outs in game action.

This being the silly season of politics (is there any other kind?), when pretty much anyone with an opinion can venture a guess on what happened, let me offer my two cents. I went back to look at the video of the second team technical with under 8 minutes left. Officiating up to that point was--shall we say--uneven at best. If you want to look at it for yourself, start the video at 01:30:20, when Calvin had just regained possession with the game score at 61-59. On his way to the hoop, Derrick DeVries is called for carrying, an official's judgment that doesn't remotely reflect reality. The bemused expression on Bill Sall's face in the wake of that miserable call tells me he already had one T to his name, and that Calvin's head coach didn't think it was an opportune time to acquire a second one and get tossed. On Anderson's ensuing possession, Emmett Warners is whistled for a phantom foul, after which Calvin called a timeout. At that point, the camera only shows the scoreboard, so there is no video of the interaction with officials. I'm guessing that assistant coach Mark Warners took exception to the foul called on his son, and that it was Mark who picked up the technical then assessed, not Coach Sall. With less than a minute remaining, and with the final outcome predetermined, Sall didn't find it important to hang around for the last few seconds of the game, and he presumably rendered his verdict on the game officiating he had observed.

To me, that is a carry.

I don't have any history though on the game, and if that call was consistent with other calls/no calls, etc.  I literally only watched that one play.

WUPHF

I hate to say it but I also think that is a carry.

Sorry, OK, but that was a blatant carry. If you freeze it at 01:30:19 just as DeVries is stepping on the three-point arc with his right foot, you can see that his hand is clearly underneath the ball.

Goodness.  This will be a fun season.  James I am gone.  Just a fan now.

In a single game coach Sall has now surpassed coach VandeStreek's career record for technical fouls and it looks as though coach Hacklin's lifetime record may also be in jeopardy, based on the current trend line.
I love Billy-ball.
