Quote from: oldknight on November 21, 2019, 01:20:00 PMThis being the silly season of politics (is there any other kind?), when pretty much anyone with an opinion can venture a guess on what happened, let me offer my two cents. I went back to look at the video of the second team technical with under 8 minutes left. Officiating up to that point was--shall we say--uneven at best. If you want to look at it for yourself, start the video at 01:30:20, when Calvin had just regained possession with the game score at 61-59. On his way to the hoop, Derrick DeVries is called for carrying, an official's judgment that doesn't remotely reflect reality.

Sorry, OK, but that was a blatant carry. If you freeze it at 01:30:19 just as DeVries is stepping on the three-point arc with his right foot, you can see that his hand is clearly underneath the ball.

Greg: I just saw your reply and went back to look again, even putting on my glasses this time (and not the rose-colored ones!). If the officials call that as a carry, they could call a carry on pretty much every possession these days. Just for one example, go back and look at the Anderson's ensuing possession where--advancing the video to 01:30:39--#21 is dribbling over the mid-court line. What #21 does with the ball there is more of a carry than what Derrick DeVries did. For old guys like you and me, how dribblers handle the ball in today's game might have been considered a carry in the 1970's, but it isn't today. Sorry, but I'm not buying what you're selling.

Sorry, OK, but I'm not going to bother looking at that other play. I know what I saw, and DeVries clearly had his hand underneath the ball. Judging by the two posts before mine from other objective observers, I'm obviously not the only one who spotted it.

Now, Q is entirely correct when he implies that calls exist within the context of a game. If the refs were letting other players carry the ball that blatantly, then Calvin fans have a case to complain about the inconsistency of the officiating. But they don't have a case to complain that in this particular instance Derrick DeVries didn't carry the ball. Because he did.

In addition to his hand being underneath the ball, it happened while DeVries was making a move around a defender towards the basket -- in other words, he gained an advantage in doing it.  I think that is why it was so obvious.  It's not like it happened quietly as he was bringing the ball up the floor unguarded.  I'd think that would be called 9 times out of 10 in college basketball games.

On the ensuing play with #21, I agree that is a carry by definition too.  But it happened at mid-court with no one near him - basically no advantage gained.

Those are the only two plays from that game I have watched, but I agree with both the call on Calvin and the no call on Anderson.

I will also add I wish DeVries had not lit my team up on 11/15.

Hope 82
Anderson 64

Nice win for Hope.  It was a 40-37 game at halftime, but Hope came out like gang busters to open the 2nd half and built a nice lead that Anderson never could cut into.  Hope with 42 points in the paint and 24 of their total off the bench. Nice balanced attack.  Too many turnovers, and the FT shooting was sub-par again (64%) but their hustle, defense (7 blocks), rebounding, and passing (17 assists) led to the victory.

Without Calvin Hackert (ankle sprain) freshman Clayton Dykhouse started and played 31 min, with 2pts but 6 assists and only a single turnover. Preston Granger lead the team with 22 pts and had his way inside. Riley Lewis with 16 and Tyler George with 14 were the others in double figures.

Ryan Gamm with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks continues to impress and is becoming a defensive force inside. He also had a couple of sweet high low passes that setup easy baskets for Granger.  The combination of Granger, Gamm, and Vree is looking to be a solid rotation inside. Add in Jake Horner and his intensity and toughness and things look pretty good inside.

Now on to the bank du jour tournament.

Great synopsis, FDF. Yes, indeed, a healthy Ryan Gamm adds force to Hope's inside game, and the up-tempo speed and assists of Clayton Dykhouse add excitement, along with some easy baskets. Should be a fun year of watching Hope BB teams.

Don't write off Trine in the MIAA race too soon gentlemen.  They looked pretty good this weekend in beating Muskingum and Mount Union at home.  They overcame an impressive performance by Muskingum's Marcus Dempsey on Saturday who went for 39, but most of their sets were pretty much get the ball to Dempsey and let him dribble drive to the hoop or pull up with jumpers or 3s.  Trine's offensive balance was the difference, Geller, Johnson, Winters, Williams, Cox and Daniels all scored in double digits.  Jake Daniels is our new "Pete Smith", the guy can flat out shoot the ball.

Today is was Langston Johnson who was on fire, he finished with a game high 31.  Trine led most of the way, I believe by as much as 12 in the second half before Mount Union came all the way back and tied the game in the final minute.  Trine won on a driving bucket by Marcus Winters with 2 seconds to go.  Mount Union inbounded the ball to halfcourt and did have a decent look on a 3pointer to win the game but was just off the mark.  Mount Union is awfully good so for Trine to get a win against them is huge.

We are still trying to find a 5th starter without out injured starter Mo Hunter yet to be cleared to play.  We've tried Warzecha, Clune, and today was Brandon Johnson, who maybe gives us a little more scoring threat than the other 2.  With both Geller and Cox in foul trouble today we played 5 guards at times with pretty good success as our guards can really rebound.  Winters at 5'11 is pretty impressive defensively, he had multiple blocks today on guys half a foot taller than him.

One point to note, the technical foul called on Anderson was Arnulfo continuing to be the worst ref in D3 basketball. At the time, Hope was up 7, and the second half shift in momentum was accelerated by the call. And although I disagree with the argument Coach Handy was protesting, Mr. Perez took exception to merely volume and tone of the descent, as no choice words were used. A better ref gives him a warning and moves on.

Not sure I agree with your comments - he had already been warned (somewhat informally) in the 1st half.  This was an accumulation tech, but also one due to the volume of the dissent and it's timing.

He had said "that's not a foul" several times about that play while the players and officials were on that side of the floor.  The last time was a significant increase in volume (every person in the building could hear him) and I think most importantly happened after everyone was on the other side of the court.  You eventually need to let it go...

IMHO - score and momentum should not affect any call made by an official.

I get all of that and agree in part.

I also firmly believe that refs need to do everything they can to not make the game about them. It would have been very easy to not call a tech there. It would have been very easy to make the comment, "Coach, you are dangerously close to getting T'd up..." I just don't think, not matter how loudly he yells "that's not a foul?!?" that it's worthy of a T.
