Not sure I agree with your comments - he had already been warned (somewhat informally) in the 1st half.  This was an accumulation tech, but also one due to the volume of the dissent and it's timing.

He had said "that's not a foul" several times about that play while the players and officials were on that side of the floor.  The last time was a significant increase in volume (every person in the building could hear him) and I think most importantly happened after everyone was on the other side of the court.  You eventually need to let it go...

IMHO - score and momentum should not affect any call made by an official.
I get all of that and agree in part.

I also firmly believe that refs need to do everything they can to not make the game about them. It would have been very easy to not call a tech there. It would have been very easy to make the comment, "Coach, you are dangerously close to getting T'd up..." I just don't think, not matter how loudly he yells "that's not a foul?!?" that it's worthy of a T.

I totally agree that Mr. Perez has the "make myself important" problem that plagues some officials, but I just think that at some point the timing and loudness of the comment deserve the T.  All of the officials already knew he didn't agree with the call, so why get that loud and say it again - most likely to try to "show up" the officials in some way.  Again, at some point the coach needs to let it go, and at this point I will as well. :)

Top to bottom the MIAA is off to a better start than I anticipated. It's early days but, according to Massey Ratings, all eight teams rate in the top half of D3 and the league rates as the 6th best conference having played the most difficult schedule.

Maybe Owen Handy wanted to get T'ed up. It's one of the oldest psychological ploys in basketball coaching. To mix metaphors, you can light a fire under your team if they're struggling by letting them know that you've got their back. You do that by taking on the ref yourself and getting handed a T-bone for it.

In fact, without seeing what happened, I'll bet that this was indeed his intention. Owen's a relatively young head coach, but he's definitely old-school in the vein of his mentor, retired Wheaton coach Bill Harris. Owen's not gonna drop any naughty language on a zebra, because that's not him, but if it takes yelling something at said zebra from across the court that he's already said repeatedly, then that's what he'll do in order to buy the aforementioned T.

I agree - and your comment made me go check this year vs last (just for records).  30 games in we have the same record we did last year 17-13, but this year against a more difficult schedule - at least based on calculating that today.  Let's hope all those non-conference teams we are playing do really well this year.

It will be interesting to see what Hope and Calvin are able to do against Cornerstone this weekend without Vander Sluis and Costen.

I still think Cornerstone is the favorite to go 2-0 on the weekend, but it seems more plausible than most years that Hope and Calvin both COULD.
Let's go Dutchmen!

An interesting night for the MIAA.  Both Albion and Adrian won overtime games.  Albion had to come from about 10 points behind to overcome Heidelberg in double overtime, and Adrian lost a lead of about the same amount.  But they were able to score a last second basket in overtime to win by 1 point.  Both were not home games either.

The dreaded turkey fog enveloped the Knights last night in the opening game of the annual small college/university Thanksgiving weekend tourney at Cornerstone's Mol Arena.
Aquinas entered the match 1-8 on the year, but completely destroyed Calvin on the boards and scored at will in the paint to take a 21-point lead into the locker room.
The Knights briefly mounted an inspired run after intermission, cutting the margin to 12. But that was short-lived as the Saints made the Knights look sluggish through the rest of the game. Derrick DeVries led Calvin with 18 points.
Tonight, Calvin faces host Cornerstone after the Golden Eagles came back from double-digit deficits to survive against Hope 78-74 in last night's second game. The Flying Dutchmen take on Aquinas in the opening tilt at 6 p.m.

What a difference from one night to the  next!  Aquinas could not seem to miss last night and looked nothing like that  tonight as Hope handled them easily in the second half.  Calvin, after not be able to do much right and shooting terribly last night, played with far more energy and beat Cornerstone on a shot at the buzzer.  Calvin shot better on the threes in the second half, but still won it mostly based on hustle, rebounding, and drive shots.

Cornerstone beats Hope by 4, which beats Aquinas by 16, which beats Calvin by 24 . . . so Cornerstone is 44 points better than Calvin? . . . which defeats them.

I guess this is why they play the games, and part of why we love the sport.

Kudos to both Calvin and Hope for great games tonight. Love what I see developing with this year's Hope team.

Interesting addition to the Hope roster.  When is the last time Mason Oppel played basketball?  And does anyone remember his high school career?

Little different Albion team than last year.  More post depth, less guard depth but maybe better in both areas.  Albion didn't have its best night shooting but they outworkd RHIT for loose balls and rebounds and that was a pretty large reason they walked away with this W.  Albion was pretty tough down the stretch and pulled away a bit in what was a pretty close game throughout.  Caden Ebeling had some first half foul trouble that limited his night.

MJ Barnes is coming off the bench the last couple games, noticed he had a brace on his left wrist which disappeared at halftime.   I believe Fr. Josh Palo has moved into a starting role.

If you don't have good PG play you're going to have a hard time beating the Brits.  Jamezelle Davis was so smooth tonight, exactly 1 turnover and really good command of his role, absolutely lethal on the few fast break opportunities this game afforded.

At this point d3hoops.com needs to do an expose on Davis's incredible ability to hit the big shot, yet another buzzer beater this one a 3 at the end of the first half.

Albion is off until the 17th when they play DePauw at Transylvania , then they get Marietta or Transylvania.  Either one a really good Great Lakes pairing.  They could certainly have no more than 2 or 3 losses by MIAA play.

Veni Vidi Vici

Hope has one of the best RPIs/Strength-of-Schedules in the nation... but it's only 3 games against D3 foes and all 3 have been at home.  Still though, wins against Benedictine and Ripon look pretty good right now as those teams haven't lost to anyone other than Hope.

Games this week at #11 UW-Platteville and (also receiving votes #27) UW-Stevens Point are some serious litmus test games for the Dutchmen.

Veni Vidi Vici

Similarly for Calvin... Their win over (also receiving votes #39) Illinois Wesleyan on the road is a quality win and a close loss to #24 Augustana is respectable.  This week they've got their own tests with UW-Whitewater and defending champ #13 UW-Oshkosh coming to town.
