At Eckerd... Emory and Henry no hope of stopping DeVries.. E&H playground offense is sad...  and yikes, Coach Saul is DEMANDING (nothing wrong with that)

E&H has a brand new coach and had at least two players transfer out.  Going to be a rough year, for sure.
Calvin has a brand new coach and their two big guys graduated.

Sure.  Whatever.  I don't know what you want me to say here.  Something about continuity?  I was just trying to say a team missing its top six scorers from last year with a new coach might not be super together just yet.

Is there any place the box score is available for today's game against Emory?  Who scored how many points, rebounded, assisted, and all those interesting details?

For now it is here on the live stats page:

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=289311

Calvin wins 97-73 over Emory and Henry.
DeVries had 26 and 9, Warners had 21 and 7, DeWitte 15, Shymanski 11.

14 players played, but only 7 played 10+ minutes.

I am encouraged to see Warners and DeWitte scoring the points they scored.  If they can continue to contribute offensively with DeVries, Shymanski, and Bos it will really help.  Although this team was clearly not a strong challenge, it still took the plays to score.

Wilmington 69 Olivet 67  F

I checked out the Comets this afternoon.  Olivet really fired out the gate and led this one for a long long time.  Shawn Pardee had 19 first half points.  After the break Wilma picked up the defense a bit and you could feel them sort of squeeze the game away from Olivet.  It stayed close late.

Interesting late strategy from the Comets.   Down 2, 35 seconds left and 30 sec on the possession clock for Wilma Olivet chooses to play it out instead of foul and send the Quakers to the line for FT's.   Even after a Wilma timeout Olivet stuck with it, Wilma missed a 3 at their shot clock buzzer, Olivet rebounded and could just get it ahead to a streaking Colin Carter who just couldn't get a shot off in time.

Pardee 28, Collins 15

Right now Olivet looks like a big box of oddly shaped puzzle pieces, I think they'll be pretty decent by late Jan into Feb.  They might be a little short on offensive consistency and firepower but catch them on the wrong night and just about everyone in the MIAA could struggle with this team.   FYI its full Hargraves at Alma offense.

I was a little surprised to learn Wilmington opted to drive up to Olivet this morning instead of an over night trip.  I guess its not much different than one of their long OAC trips but that struck me as odd.  That's gotta be close to 5 hours by bus.

Great bb summary coverage of the MIAA teams, sac! Appreciate the detail (and thanks as well to you other Hope posters down in FL who are doing the same.)

As to the Wilmington drive, sac, actually it is just over 4 hours. An easy drive- I've done it several times. Makes sense to save a little $ in these times.

BTW, you guys all really need to watch the Stagg Bowl tomorrow night!😁

Any Hope fans have a scouting report on the young bucks from Carleton? They have some freshman putting up impressive stats, but I haven't watched them play yet.

Thanks in advance.

One thing that stood out to me is their lack of depth. They played only eight players (one of which played less than one minute) in an overtime game in which two of their starters fouled out.

Gregory Sager

That's a perennial problem for Carleton, which always seems to have a numerically small roster (just 11 guys this season, f'rinstance), and typically a few of them seem to be there mostly to help facilitate 5-on-5 practices.

I was surprised at that too, and more surprised this years team is made up of 8 Freshman, but as said above, really only a 6 man rotation.

HoopsCoach

Hope had a nice week of continued growth. What is different about this team is many guys play critical roles as opposed to just a few the past couple of seasons.

One common theme? The officiating was bad. I mean really bad. Like fifth run on a day in an AAU tournament bad. In the Carleton game it was overheard in the small venue to "keep selling the flop" with the big guys (worked as Granger and Gamm fouled out). They knew their edge was to get Hope's big to the bench so their bigs could feed. The one freshman, number 35, was a great stretch post and the strategy nearly worked, until the Knight's primary two bigs fouled out.

That team will be really good in another year and with a touch more depth.

Back to the Dutchmen, the second night was the sort of win that's not been easily found by the orange and blue the past few seasons. Bodes well for what will be night in and night out dog fights in the MIAA. Dykhouse really shined bright, Hackert is as steady as they come, Thomas was dinged up but is a huge plus player, Vree stepped up in a time of need, Honer and Gamm are a great defensive duo, Granger was laser focused on the second night, and George was as good as I've seen on D so far. If they can shake the cobwebs out of Lewis, the upside is very good.

Just something fun I thought of... With 2020 approaching, what is everybody's MIAA/D3Hoops "hot take" of the past decade. For example, mine would be if Hope had beaten Hanover in 2017, they go on to win the National Championship. ;D

This! When Wes McKinney hit that three, it floored me. I was convinced then, and still am, that Hope would have beat Augustana in the following game, and would have beat Williams in the next game. I think a championship game against Babson could have gone either way.

I'm not sure that it's a hot take, HupHolland, but my most memorable game of the last decade--ever, in fact--was Hope's double overtime tournament matchup with IWU. The result was a heartbreaking loss--and who knows what might have transpired thereafter with a win--but the atmosphere was electric, as seen in this Interlude dance that swept the 3500 fans with 3 minutes left . . . as the teams dueled to a regulation draw:

Win or lose, D3 sports--or sports at any level--gets no better than this.

Mine is that 2013 was the second-best team KVS had at Calvin, probably a bit better than the 2005 Final Four squad.

Here's a hotter non-Hope or Calvin take...

Scott Nikodemski was the best player in the MIAA over the last decade.
