I've been trying to quietly enjoy this season, but I am going to come out of the woodwork to congratulate my Albion Britons on winning the league title outright tonight. I was a sophomore in HS and D3 basketball was not on my radar when Albion won it in 2005, so this is a first for me. I though coach May and the players did a wonderful job coming together in the wake of Zak Winston's passing to reach this moment.

A few questions for the board.

1. With Kzoo breaking its skid against Hope, what is the longest winning streak of an MIAA school over another? Could it be Calvin's 5 game streak over Hope?

2. If Albion falls in the conference tourney, do they have a shot at pool C?

Thanks everyone, enjoy the last week of MIAA basketball!

Congrats to the Brits on their well deserved outright Championship.  Takes a really special group of people to pull through what they've endured and accomplish something like that.  Fun to be there tonight.

This one turned into a real defensive battle.  Trine was in position to win again but couldn't come up with the big shots down the stretch, up 7 a couple times with less than 10 minutes to play.  Albion made plays on both ends down the final stretch run .   Final bucket by Jamezell Davis, watch as he beats the two time defending MIAA defensive player of the year for the winning basket.

+1 for road win/ -1 for home loss

1.  Albion 11-2  +5----Clinched MIAA Championship #1 seed
2.  Calvin 8-5  +2
2.  Adrian 8-5  +1
4.  Trine 7-6 +1

8.  Olivet 3-10  -4  -Eliminated

I think this is how seeding shakes out

1.  Albion

2.  Winner of Adrian at Calvin

3.  Adrian/Calvin loser if Trine loses or......
Adrian loss Trine win ---Adrian wins tie-break with 1-1 vs Albion

4.  Calvin loss Trine win =Calvin
Trine win Adrian loss = Trine
     Trine  loss   =Trine

5.  Alma  win or lose

6.  Hope win = Hope
     Kzoo loss = Hope
Hope lose Kzoo win---Kzoo wins tie-break if Calvin beats Adrian, Hope wins tie-break if Adrian beats Calvin.

Remaining games:

Adrian  at Calvin   --winner gets 2 seed

Perhaps the only time in my life where I can/will ever say that a Hope win and Calvin loss feels like the very worst case scenario? I would rather miss out on the tournament than be subjected to another 2020 version of "The Rivalry"...

2. If Albion falls in the conference tourney, do they have a shot at pool C?

A shot? Yes, but I would say not a very good one. Albion's losses to Mount Union and Marietta do them no favors. They currently sit 5th in the regional rankings, behind two OAC teams and two NCAC teams. The only regionally ranked team ahead of them with a lower sos than Albion's .533 is Wittenberg, and I can't see a 20-5 team that's 0-2 against RROs jumping a 23-2 team that would be 2-2 against RROs, assuming they get beat by Wooster, 2-1 if they lose to a non RRO.

Therefore, the non-AQ from Wittenberg/Wooster and Mt. Union/Marietta will almost certainly be ahead of Albion in line should Albion not get the MIAA AQ. I do think those teams get in though, so Albion would at least make it to the table, hypothetically.

I think Albion is sitting OK. I'd expect them to have a good shot at a Pool C if they win the next two but lose in the MIAA title game.

All looks correct except I believe Alma is locked into 5. They have tiebreaker over Hope but also lost both to Trine so in a 7-7 tie, Trine wins tiebreak on head to head 2-0 vs Alma.

Few key moments from  Trine @ Albion

Trine had great ball movement all night, here was one of their better examples.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=5493

Here's another
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=5824

Big shot by Justin McCabee, Hunter sags off on a staple Albion in-bounds play, Justin makes them pay.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=5914

McCabee's shot led to this next sequence where Albion goes from potential fast break layup to tie to being down 7.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=5923

Remember this move by Ebeling for later, he turned baseline all night almost. He's just so good at pinning you inside with his right shoulder. This one was high difficulty.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=6395

Immediate sequence after, Johnson's 3 goes in and out, then Jamezell does a Jamezell thing.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=6412

This was a interesting moment, Trine "airballs a 3" late in the shot clock, live I did not think it touched iron, ball ends up in Johnson's hand who chucks a 3 that goes in just before the shot clock expires and before the refs stop play because the shot clock didn't reset to 20.  Caused a lot of confusion among the fans around me.   Follow the next play after the officials talk and see one of those famous "tournament whistles" where the foul is called after the miss.  "Ball don't lie"
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=6603

Back to Ebeling, tie game, defender over plays to the baseline just a hair and Ebeling turns middle for I think the first time in the game.  Both players had 4 fouls.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=6858

late game now, Albion up 4, off the in-bounds, Jake Daniels extends the game, great screen by Cox
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=7311

Ha ha ha.   During the FT at the other end, May yelled to his team don't screw it up.
https://youtu.be/CTTaeMvEIO0?t=7565

I've already posted Jamezell's winning shot.

Last night Hope was up on Alma 74-54 with 7:55 left in the game. Cole Kiever, Alma guard, made a 2 point jump shot with 7:18 to go.  He went on to score 25 more points in regulation to help Alma send the game into overtime.  Over the last 7 minutes, Kiever had 27pts, 8-8FG, 5-5 3pts, 6-6 FT. One could say he had a hot hand.

It was truly amazing to watch that - albeit frightening as heck to us Dutchmen.  He just couldn't miss for those 7 minutes.  Fortunately for Hope, the rest of the game he really struggled: 6 points on 2-8 FG, 0-5 3PT, 2-3 FT and he fouled out (in OT).

I know Kzoo hasn't beat Albion since 2014, so that's what, 12 games? Probably tough to find a streak longer than that.

Not much to talk about in this one.  Albion's lone Sr. Alex Warman got some nice minutes at the start and a few at the finish.  Albion played good enough on defense to make Olivet look like a mess for a long stretch of the game.

One injury to report, Josh Palo left the game with a non-contact injury to his knee in the 1st half, left the game.  He was on the bench in the 2nd half but didn't participate in warmups or play.   Knee was bright red from across the gym.    A Palo-less Albion would slide Barnes into the starting spot and Juwan Perry would probably pick up a few more minutes.    Not a disaster injury, but not a great one going into tournament time.

Palo's injury occurs on this fast break  https://youtu.be/2UOII9T7FwQ?t=1511

32 different players logged minutes if that says anything.

Albion:  Ebeling 17, Perry 15, Davis 14, Garland 11
Olivet:   Angell 15, Thigpen 13, Franklin 10

Once again, congrats to Albion on a great regular season championship.
