As we head toward the later part of the recruiting seasons and decision making by the high school grads attending MIAA schools, it would be very interesting if someone knows enough about the various prospects to predict the iimpact the groups will have 3 to 4 years into the future.  Clearly different colleges have a wide variety of numbers of new players coming in (varying from 2 to 5 players for most).  But how will that compare with the impact on the competitive ability in all likelihood?  With 13 (apparently rather good) players coming in their freshman class, does Hope have quite an advantage?  Or do others with smaller numbers such as Calvin, Trine, and Alma have better quality players?  Naturally, any prediction will be difficult, but if anyone feels they know enough to hazard a guess,  I would be interested.

It's really tough for Freshmen to have a big impact on the conference race.

I think we have at least 3 years of history of these types of list on the board. It would be interesting to see how many players impacted the league as freshmen. Or how many have impacted the league race at all.

*Most* of these players will not end up panning out on the court for the school listed. A number will still be on rosters as Juniors. A few, but not many, will be big-time players down the road.

Here's the Calvin portion of the mostly-complete list from August, 2017. True Freshmen will be seniors next season, if there is a next season.

Forrest Bouyer was a JV, a reserve, and did not make the roster.
THAD SHYMANSKI was a JV, a starter, and is now All-MIAA
Derek Jay was injured, injured, and is not on the roster.
Luke Morrison was a solid freshman who transferred. He appeared in 26 as a bench player for a very good Emory team this year.
Sam LaDuke was JV, reserve, bench player.
Truman Hillis did not make a varsity roster or probably ever even come to Calvin.
Ryan Pustelnik played a year of club volleyball at GVSU.
Emmett Warners was a reserve, bench player, and now starter.
Jason Walter was a key bench player for two years as a transfer.
David Rinke was also a FR that year. He played JV, was injured, and is no longer on a roster.

Morrison was the closest thing to an impact freshman, and he really wasn't that aside from a few games here and there. Shymanski was a home run (to mix sports metaphors), but didn't pay off right away. Walter and Warners were solid gets. Warners perhaps more than solid depending on next season, but again, not right away.

Good summary, though I'm pretty sure Truman Hillis never actually came to Calvin, even though I think there was talk he would attend. Truman wound up at Aquinas, and was redshirted his first season. Truman has played as a reserve for the Saints varsity team the last 2 seasons and this past year, averaged 9 minutes of PT per game.

Impact is a bit subjective but it has to be the right situation for a Freshmen to step into a varsity program and gain meaningful minutes.

Here's last years Freshmen who played 20+ games and logged 10+ minutes, after these six guys I'd say most minutes any Freshmen were able to get were mop up minutes or early season non-conference games.  (all 6 of these guys were 20 plus minutes avg's)

Josh Palo -- Albion
Evan Thomas -- Hope
Clayton Dykhouse -- Hope
Britton Angell -- Olivet
Noah Wiswary -- Olivet
Brent Cox -- Trine

Thomas ended up leading  Hope in minutes played, which has to be a very rare thing.

2019 "impact" Freshmen

Caleb Ballentine -- Adrian
MJ Barnes -- Albion
Zachary Winston -- Albion
Cole Kleiver -- Alma
Brandon Rake -- Alma
Carson Meulenberg -- Calvin
Drake Thompson -- Kalamazoo
Nick Bowman -- Trine

15 player class now for Hope... Going to be some unhappy guys getting cut this year or the next.  Good problem to have, but I don't envy Coach Mitch's task there.  Looking like the best Hope class since 2013

I think you'll find about 1/2 of Hope's listed class is guys who will be attending Hope because they like the school and will be trying out for basketball.

ie Griffin Gleason
I watched ER a couple times this Winter and never knew he was considering Hope.  Great student, hopes to be pre-med and my chain of links back to Griffin believe he wants to try-out for basketball but that's not certain.  Griffin's older brother is at Hope and a Jr. or Sr next year.  I think he tried out as a Freshmen.

I may have jumped the gun a little on Griffin as a Hope recruit.   :-\

Just from watching lots of Hudl I see probably 8 guys with varsity potential by their sophomore year, and probably more if it were a smaller class.  Easy to look good on highlights, but a lot of them stand out to me, and look more talented than guys currently on the roster.  I wonder what the max number is that we'd keep on varsity from one class

Hope's Sr class of seven (if Beckman returns) is just about the max Hope's had.
