Hope's game against Alma has been moved from Wednesday to Friday at 6pm.  There will be no JV game.

So as it stands now, Hope gets to open the season with this schedule

vs Alma - 6pm Fri
@ Calvin - 3pm Sat
@ Albion - 7:30pm Mon
@ Trine - 7:30pm Wed

Just 4 games with no more than 1 day off between them.  Guess we will at least know how their conditioning work has been going :)

as if Calvin, Albion, Trine all on the road wasn't going to be tough enough already.

I don't hate it.

The bus ride part of on the road will still be tough, but it will be interesting to see how much of the "home court advantage" still exists.  At least these games aren't conference games (if that ultimately matters or not).

...and the 10 days off with no basketball activities.

Since the rest of the league is (or was) scheduled for tonight, does anyone know why Albion and Kalamazoo are not also scheduled?

Kalamazoo opted to start on Feb 6., I don't have a reason why.   Albion is just the odd team out for this round of games.

These shifts in dates tend to be because the school has brought back students at a later date. It is something I've seen in a lot of leagues. MAC just yesterday released schedules with Alvernia only playing six games while everyone else are 8-10. Alvernia brought back the students a few weeks later than everyone else.

I haven't looked Kalamazoo up as of yet (will probably later today), but that is what is seems.

"Conscious decision" it was called.

Makes sense, since I know many of the unconscious decisions in my life have not always turned out so well :)

Couple of games last night that were close at the half, but large final margins

Half-time scores

Trine 43
Calvin 42
(Trine hit a buzzer beater 3 to take the halftime lead)

Olivet 32
Adrian 36

Final scores:

Trine 83
Calvin 65

Olivet 67
Adrian 80

Anyone have insights on either game?

Trine opened up the game by taking control in the first ten minutes of the second half. In my mind the difference was really the three point shooting. Trine was 6-for-9 from deep in the first half but Calvin kept pace by going 5-for-9.

Different story in the second half where Trine kept it going by making 5 of 11 (I could be wrong but I believe a couple of those misses came after the game was basically determined. They were >60% from 3 at one point I looked fairly late in the 2nd) but Calvin made just 2 of 11.

Credit Trine. They were solid all night, efficient from inside and outside the arc and basically just kept pulling away as Calvin's offense started to sputter.

Edit: I should mention that the Knights were without Emmett Warners again in this one. Hopefully he isn't too far from returning because his loss is felt.

Nick Bowman of Trine has really been such a great surprise this year and is unquestionably the difference maker so far on this Trine team.  Mengnanglo has a lot of skills for not playing basketball very long.  Comes to Trine by way of Benin, Africa and Amelia Academy in Virginia.  If he keeps developing he'll easily be an all conference guy down the road.  Everyone on this team plays very well together this year, which hasn't always been the case...unselfish is a word that comes to mind.  The substitution pattern is very rapid, the scorers at the table have to be on their toes, it's rare that guys are in the game more than 3-4 minutes at a time before a sub comes in.  I can remember the day not too far off when Coach Miller played maybe 7 guys and rarely substituted.  Those Holmquist/Dixon squads the starters played 35-38 min a game.  Not any more.  Wish I could see them play in person, but the good news is they'll all be back next year as there are no seniors on the team.  Here's hoping the gyms will be open to spectators in '21-'22.

It's finally a Hope basketball day and I'm excited to be able to see some Hope basketball for the first time this season.  I'm sure the team is fired up to play as well

The Division III basketball season technically started nearly three months ago, but it has taken until the end of January for it to start feeling like the season is really underway. Even so, only about a quarter of the division has played just a single game. Another quarter of the division will never take to the court. And in between is wide gulf of different options.

On the first video-version of Hoopsville this season, Dave McHugh is joined by much of the D3hoops.com crew, Pat Coleman and Ryan Scott, to react to what has been one of the more unique seasons ... to say it lightly.

We react to the challenges schools are facing, what coaches are grappling with on a daily basis - especially beyond games and practices, and why schools are making so many different decisions.

We also discuss what is likely the future of this season's NCAA Championship Tournaments and, more importantly, when the decision on those tournaments will be made.

Plus, will there be a Top 25? No. Well, yes. Kind of. Tune in to learn more on what's coming. Plus a lot more including Dave spinning off Pat's thoughts on those wishing to attend games.
