Also, not insignificant to note that Caden Ebeling is #5 for LSSU.

Missed the connection on this, thanks.  Nice tribute.

D3hoops.com preseason MBB All American Team announced today.

2nd team accolades to Nick Bowman of Trine.  Twenty-one seniors and four juniors represented in the top 25.

Are the MIAA coaches pre-season predictions supposed to come out still?

Calvin opens with Illinois Tech today at Van Noord Arena. Illinois Tech did not play last season due to COVID-19 but finished 12-14 in 2019-20. That team got a lot of contribution from Sophomores, so they have some returning talent (including 3 starters and a sixth man). I expect this to be a fairly close game most of the way, but it's one Calvin has to win if they're going to take a step forward this year.

Final:  Trine 61   Mt St Joseph 52

I wasn't expecting a close game based on Trine winning by 40 at MSJ last year.  Credit to the Lions though, they came out and punched us in the face in the first half, defensively we lost our man on several possessions and MSJ made us pay.  We couldn't get anything going offensively, I believe MSJ built a 10 point lead at one point.  Then Hayden Jones provided a spark for our listless offense with 2 threes in a row.  We hit a couple more threes in the 1st half and clawed back to within one point at the break.  We played much better defense in the second half, MSJ didn't get nearly as many open looks as they did in the first half.  We got the lead back and had several opportunities to open it up but missed shots and turnovers hurt us.  It was a tight game until the last couple of minutes.  It was nice to get back to MTI to watch in person, decent sized crowd.  We're on everyone's radar this year and will get our opponents best shot.  In my honest opionion based on today's play we aren't a top 25 team, but it's one game and it's better to play lousy and get a W then to start off with a L.  Nick Bowman with 24 and Brent Cox with 15 to lead Trine.

Calvin won today;s game 85-54, leading the entire second half.  The real key seemed to be the rebounds, which Calvin dominated 54 to 28.  Even though they have the shortest team that I can remember, they still controlled the boards.  Katje had 14 rebounds even though he is not that tall, but his positioning and timing are so good.  They also had a 17 to 10 advantage in turnovers.  Calvin started the game with an extremely aggressive defense and had several fast breaks as a result of steals.   As a result, Calvin was behind only one time early in the game and had larger and larger leads as the game went on.  It was a very fast-paced game for most of the time.

KnightSlappy

A solid season debut for the Knights with a comfortable win over Illinois Tech. They'll come away with plenty of things to clean up -- I thought they left Illinois Tech with too many open looks -- but ultimately Calvin was the much better team. Particularly outstanding was the rebounding effort which Calvin won 54-28, including 21 offensive rebounds which led to 21 second-chance points.

Uchenna Egekeze started off his sophomore season well with 19 points and was very active on defense with 4 steals and a couple of blocks.

I was rather impressed with Luke Morrison in his return to Calvin. He had a nice shooting touch from range and played some pesky defense, at least that's how it came across on TV.

I wasn't able to be at the arena today but hope to be there for Tuesday's exhibition vs. the Bible Tigers

Thinking back to Saturday's Calvin game, it struck me as rather significant that two subs who played very little last year received 15 minutes  each and played very well.  Sensenig scored 9 points on 4 for 5 shooting and Bult appeared much more confident with 5 points and 4 rebounds.  He fit right in and could well have been a starter from the way he played.  Nyong had 7 rebounds in 7 minutes, but he did have some typical freshman rough edges.  That should improve with more playing time.

It will be interesting to see how Bill Sall handles playing time and rotations this season. He has kept a pretty tight rotation since taking the Calvin post and looking back at his NMU days suggests that isn't out of the ordinary for him. However, in the postgame interview he mentioned the team's depth, stating he could go 9-10 deep.

Uchenna Egekeze. Thad Shymanski, Luke Morrison, Emmett Warners, Jordan Katje were the starting five. Alec Fruin didn't play but as a two-year D2 starter may slide into the starting lineup once he's back on the court. Senesig, Bult and Minderhoud were the main three off the bench that saw minutes before late in the game. That accounts for all the players who saw minutes in the first half on Saturday (plus Fruin).

Nyong might be the tenth man right now. He didn't get in until the second half but was on the court ahead of the likes of Henry Goldkuhle, Gabe Dirksen and Koby Vander Woude. Nyong and Jack Calahane are both credited with seven minutes of game time.

If you want to look ahead to the future, Dirksen and Vander Woude were the only players from the portion of the roster listed without jersey numbers.

Good summary of what I was trying to get at.  I had not heard the post-game interview, but it certainly looks like more players seeing game time, though it could be because of the large lead that we saw so many players.  The comment about Fruin especially interested me since it seemed  that as a  D2 year starter he would see a lot of plying time.  Is there a reason he is not in so far?

I didn't see a player with his number on the bench. Maybe he was one of those wearing a warmup jacket covering his number, or maybe he was the one in street clothes, or maybe he wasn't there at all, I don't know.

I believe Fruin was in street clothes sitting near the coaches. Hard to tell when you're trying to identify a newcomer while watching the stream from home. Sall also mentioned some injuries during his postgame comments so I'm guessing that includes Fruin. Not sure who else that mjght be, unless he wasn't being literal when pluralizing the word injuries - or more minor things that are being played through.

I asked about Froin and was told that he is injured, but he did not appear to hurting too much.  So maybe we will see him playing soon.  Another big win, but the competition did not seem real strong.  Morrison caught fire and scored 29.  Good rebounding again and had fewer turnovers than Grace Christian.
