I've seen that call a lot - defenders trying to draw an elbow call or a shoulder.  Anytime the ref thinks a guy moved without being hit, they're certainly free to call it.
It was called on the offensive player.

Yes, I've seen it on the DEFENSIVE player when they moved without being hit, without hitting the deck. Never the offensive player.

True enough.  That's a new NBA rule this year - penalizing the guy for knocking his head back like he got hit.  I suppose its within the flopping rules for the NCAA, too - any kind of simulation would be - but you're right, they don't call it too much.

Fans should be able to call refs for simulating being a referee.  Am I right?

Absolutely, and it even has an "official" name...

I love that Hope streams their games on Youtube. It makes pulling it up on my smart tv very simple.

Vimeo never works and I always end up having to connect my computer to my tv in order to watch Calvin's live stream. Any suggestions from Vimeo fans?

Calvin games have also streamed on Youtube since the start of this season. I'm with you, I also like it when games are available through Youtube. Definite convenience factor there.

Here is the YT link for tonight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Lb3tlC_A0

The Hope Athletics YouTube channel will be carrying both the men's and womens's games tonight. Men's game is also on GVSU (assume the YouTube and Vimeo streams are both streaming the GVSU broadcast).

Here is a link to the men's game on Youtube (already has 1 person waiting :) ):

Guess I duplicated ziggy, but I'm sure the Hope link is better ;D ;D

The links will be indistinguishable but both sides will tell you there is a huge difference while not being able to explain it.  ;)

Is Calvin's announcer always so apathetic towards the away team?

Believe it or not, the guys calling the game for WGVU are supposed to be "neutral" and knowledgeable

Calvin really struggled tonight when it came to driving to the basket and making any attempt at finding the possible open man on the outside.  Nice win by Hope.  Impressive defense.

A well-deserved 78-65 win by Hope at Calvin tonight. I thought the visitors defended extremely well all game, even as Calvin's D--while very good the first 20 minutes--sagged a bit the second frame. Hope just looked stronger down the stretch, and this was a game Bill Sall sorely missed having a tough, inside presence like his former post at NMU, Troy Summers. Evan Thomas is the best offensive player on either team, and his play was superb, but I thought Clayton Dykhouse's second half play keyed the win. Dykhouse both broke down his defender off the dribble and hit some 3's to break open a close game, putting Hope up by 10 mid-way through the final 20 minutes. Calvin never really challenged again.

To me, the first half was quite reminiscent of the old-school, hard-nosed, physical ball we saw before the game changed with the advent of the shot clock and the 3-point line. It warmed my 1970's era hoops heart. The game opened up a bit the second half, but I thought Calvin tired a bit down the stretch. A couple of other things I saw along the way were:

--a half a dozen Hope students seated at the very front of the Calvin end zone the entire game. They were well-behaved, but it struck me as odd since the Hope end zone across the way had the same seats open for them. Maybe these kids are newbies to a Rivalry  game.

--in addition to seeing the Hope students in Calvin end-zone, I observed a dad sporting a Hope sweatshirt, and seated directly behind the Calvin bench, along with what appeared to be his 12-year old son. Dad--being more self-aware than the Hope students who chose to sit in the Calvin end zone the entire game--wisely chose different seating arrangements after the National Anthem.

Hope 77 Calvin 65 F

That was a really good game.  Felt the whole way one team or the other was going to get a little hot, create some separation and play with and defend the lead in the final 4 or 5 minutes.

Key sequence was pretty obviously the back-to-back 3's by McKenzie and Bikus the second off a big offensive rebound by Schoonveld, 3 possession game to 5 in the blink of an eye with the clock disappearing.  (I think Bikus and McKenzie were a combined 0-7 at that point)   Even still with a touch under 6 minutes 5 possessions is doable, and in fact at Calvin any 5 possession lead usually gives me the heebee geebies.   But Calvin had 3 cracks to get it to 4 possessions and finally did but by that point 2 minutes more had run off the clock.  Hope was in a great position to control the final couple minutes with their FT shooting and thankfully did.   Because its always heebie geebies until the clock reads :00

Two stats that really stick out, Hope had 1 second half turnover and allowed just 1 Calvin second half offensive rebound.

Hope:  Thomas 25, Dykhouse 18, Bikus 13
Calvin:  Morrison 20, Shymanski 13

Hope played alot of the early non-conference without TJ McKenzie (football) and Jaxson Halbert (injury) and Eli Schoonveld.  All 3 really change the dynamics that Hope can play on defense.  They're really a lot longer and more athletic team than even at the start of the season and probably in Mitchell's time.  Hope has asked a lot of guys to really step up this week and they've really answered the bell.

Evan Thomas was terrific tonight, he's becoming the player I envisioned he would out of high school.  He and his game have really matured.
