+1 for road win/ -1 for home loss

Hope     11-2  +5
Calvin   10-3   +4
Trine     9-4   +2
Albion   9-4  +2

Adrian   4-9   -2
Alma     3-9   -4
Olivet    3-10   -2
Kzoo     2-10   -3

Adrian:     TRINE
Albion:     @Calvin
Alma:       @Kzoo, @Olivet
Calvin:      ALBION
Hope:       KZOO
Kzoo:       ALMA, @Hope
Olivet:      ALMA
Trine:       @Adrian

Hope wins at least a share of the MIAA Championship, they can win it outright with a win over Kzoo or loss by Calvin.  That's Greg Mitchel's 4th in 8 years at Hope, but this one feels really sweet, I really did not have Hope pegged as a legit contender until late December.

I hadn't even considered a 3-way tie for 2nd, I think it would go Trine/Albion/Calvin if Albion beats Calvin Saturday, otherwise its Calvin/Trine/Albion

Look at Alma on the cusp of the 5th seed.

And given how well Calvin played--54% shooting/44% on 3's, and only 9 turnovers--it took what was easily Hope's best game to edge the Knights, with the 93 to 81 final score not reflecting how back-and-forth close this game was. Hope fans will likely root for Calvin on Saturday, HOPEful, so they can delay having to face Calvin again. Tonight's performance will be hard to replicate.

Not to delay having to, but because the Rivalry just feels like it should be a Championship game and not a semi-final. How deflating would it be to win a game like last night in the semis only to be beaten by Albion or Trine in the final?

And to contradict myself and answer my own question, not as deflating and losing to Calvin after beating them twice in the regular season in "the one game that counts"

That would be like USA hockey beating the USSR and still having to play Finland for the Gold Medal.

The Scots are hot! Hoping that there isn't a letdown against K tonight. Already lost to the Hornets, and Alma exhausted everything to get that win last night. The fact that K is playing their third game in four days makes me feel a bit better...

Final score certainly not indicative of the kind of contest that played out last night - a great back-and-forth offensive performance. The one thing that keeps sticking with me after the fact is how easily and quickly Hope was able to erase the eight point lead Calvin took in the second half.

It could have been a turning point in Calvin's favor but that lead was gone in the blink of an eye with little to no resistance and Hope soon re-took a small lead and the game basically returned to the game it had been leading to that point. Things might have been different if Hope had to more methodically grind their way back to even footing but credit them for a quick response.

Thomas was great and in some ways reminded me of the games Derrick DeVries dominated Hope. You just get him the ball and let him go to work because the defense doesn't really have a way to deal with him.

TitanQ pointed this out on twitter.  Hope's opening tournament at IWU

Illinois Wesleyan --CCIW Champion
Oshkosh --  WIAC Champion
St. John's -- MIAC Champion
Hope --  MIAA Champion

That was one great season opening tournament.  Seeing as how season opening tournaments often include a "cupcake" or two, that is a really impressive group of teams.  Every participant got 2 RRO results as well.

He's a CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 performer. One more step in order for him to become an Academic All-American. I am only correcting you since I am the CoSIDA National Coordinator for the DIII/NAIA men's basketball program.

Alma 77 Kalamazoo 71 F

Alma is now tied with Adrian for 5th in the standings.  I think Alma holds the tie-breaker over Adrian regardless of Saturday's results. Head-to-head is 1-1,  If they tie at 4-10, Alma wins tie-break from beating Trine, if they tie at 5-9 Alma wins tie-break from beating Albion.

Adrian needs Alma to lose and a win over Trine for the 5th seed

Things get goofy if Olivet beats Alma and Trine beat Adrian, that creates a 3-way tie.  Olivet gets the 5 seed with a 3-1 head-head record over the other two.  Then I think Alma gets the 6 by the above mentioned tie-breaks over Adrian.

While we're at it, if Kzoo beats Hope and Olivet loses to Alma, Kzoo gets the 7 seed and Olivet the 8, by virtue of K's win over Hope.

The only team locked into a position is Hope and #1 seed.

Thanks sac! +k for breaking down the possibilities.  Looks likely we see Hope vs Kalamazoo in the first round, which would be 3 games against each other in 8 days - yuck!

The countdown is on! Ten more days until the regular season comes to a close and we find out who will be playing for the Walnut and Bronze!

Thursday on Hoopsville, there is plenty to keep track of throughout Division III.

We chatted with both national committee chairs, Michael Schauer of Wheaton (Ill.) and Megan Wilson of Luther, about the release, how they came to the decisions, and what they hope to inspire with the announcements. Plus more.

Then we talk to coaches around the country about their programs and how they are positioning themselves for conference tournaments.

Guests include:
  • National Committee Chairs

    • Michael Schauer, No. 11 Wheaton (Ill.) coach
    • Megan Wilson, Luther Associate Athletics Director
  • Brendan Twomey, Farmingdale State men's coach
  • Greg Mitchell, Hope men's coach
  • Nick DiPillo, No. 17 Scranton women's coach
