A couple of long search efforts at Calvin University culminated today. One was for the institution's presidency -- with the search committee unanimously recommending Dr. Wiebe Boer, a Nigerian-born academic and entrepreneur who has spent most of his life on the African continent serving with NGOs and business development. The other pursuit, conducted tirelessly by Bill Sall, will be announced shortly. #themaninthemiddle #postwiththemost
Jalen Overway.  More size in this class than Calvin has had in a little while
At one point a lot of teams were looking at him because of his size, but did he ever get offers beyond Calvin, Cornerstone, and Trinity?
LSSU early on but he said no. GVSU never offered in the end. Hillsdale had interest. Was Calvin v Cornerstone the last few months

Great question. Unless Overway wasn't interested in playing at a D2, I can't believe programs at that level wouldn't make a strong play for this kid. If they didn't, that was a mistake. 6'9" 260 pound high schoolers with a nice touch and pretty good footwork aren't all that common. I've seen the young man play more than once since he was a 10th grader, and I have to believe Bill Sall is doing cartwheels at getting Jalen to come to Calvin.

A legacy student athlete. Comes from a solid family and his dad played for Calvin.

2022 Seniors

Albion
Devin Holmes
Justin McAbee
MJ Barnes
Cortez Garland
Khy Winston

All 5 of these guys can return but all 5 participated in Albion's Sr day.  Winston is technically a Jr. but he's moving on.  There will be a lot of open minutes available.

Nice summary of the seniors...lots of recognizable names who will be missed across the league.  One note-- the Winstons participated in Albion's Senior day to honor Zach, who was part of the class of '22.  I haven't heard that Khy isn't returning.  To be fair, I haven't heard that he is returning, either, and I probably tend to be overly optimistic when it comes to Albion players who probably aren't returning.  Maybe this will be the year Jake Robison comes back.

---

Last week, I saw the movie "The Loyola Project" at the Bohm Theater in Albion.  Afterwards, there was a discussion with Michael Williams ('78) and Milton Barnes, Sr. ('79) who were part of Albion's team that went to the Final Four in 1978.  It was a great event, and if you get a chance to see the movie, I think many of you would be interested in it!

It looks like it might be shown on CBS this weekend and then will be available to stream.

---

Congratulations to Calvin on the tournament run!  (Though 2008 me and 2020 me are a little jealous of the opportunity.)

Thanks for the clarity on Winston, I'll just remove his name and assume he's coming back.

Jake Robison was quite a blast from the past.   :)

Ralph Honderd, top player on the 1960-61 Calvin Knights, the only undefeated men's team in Calvin hoops history, later head basketball coach that spanned the Mark Veenstra years, and father to All-American Steve Honderd, passed away Sunday. Ralph's hip-check during a pick-up basketball game--sending air-borne a smart-aleck high schooler who thought he was better player than he really was--a totally illegal maneuver for which a much younger oldknight never received an apology, will always be remembered by me with special fondness. :'(

Thanks for passing along this sad news, OK. As noted in his obituary, Coach/Professor Honderd formed the "An Inside Look at the January Series" course, of which I was a student during my sophomore interim. Not much thought went into my selection other than "this looks kind of interesting" but it turned into one of the more memorable courses I took.

Thank you, OK. My impression--albeit from a fan's distance--was that Ralph and his son were both class acts, who merited respect and represented Calvin so well.

Happy Calvin Guy

I too remember Ralph Honderd fondly as a professor from my first semester freshman year. I actually had the experience of taking courses from Honderd, Ed Douma, and Kevin VandeStreek during my time at Calvin. My guess is that is fairly uncommon, requiring a fairly narrow time window and specific course selection.

Nate Tucker  6-5  F/G  Marshall will attend Trine.

Really good athlete and student, he was also the QB, not sure he'll play football at Trine.  Primary interest seemed to be from Trine, Alma, Olivet and Albion in the MIAA but I think most of them were interested in him at one time or another.

Held at least one D2 football offer, a D2 walkon offer and a couple NAIA football offers.  Much of his MIAA recruiting was initially for football, including Albion and  Hope for QB.

Another 20 ppg big guard, to complement the huge post player recruits? I had wondered if Calvin BB fortunes might be descending after the graduation of so much of its talent. But Bill Sall looks to have a recruiting class that must be the envy of other MIAA coaches (though Greg Mitchell, I suspect, is happy with his recruits). Calvin fans must be smiling at the rebuilding possibilities.

Here's the Calvin press release on Dr. Boer:
https://calvin.edu/news/archive/calvin-university-appoints-dr-wiebe-boer-as-next-president?fbclid=IwAR23ld7sfdFegpoQDtOiNfK_dSE3Hk97wD8oSFARP9NtZ8xOuC0UBmnDuv4
I wonder why President Boer chose to omit his Calvin athletic participation from the press release?  He is a two-time All-MIAA XC runner.

Ralph Honderd... passed away Sunday. :'(
One of my early memories of Coach Honderd was watching a then 46-year-old man dunking with ease.  When Mrs. Hondred was asked who was a better player she answered, "Look at their numbers."
