Love it - and a bit perplexed that while I agree 4-5 is not many relative to 25, I also think it is true that too many voters did this :)

I will admit that I both have...

1. Spent too much time today on the internet trying to figure out a more exact definition as to how much is "many" and...

2. The internet agrees with Mrs. OldKnight and my use of the word many was inappropriate. The internet has informed me the correct order of ambiguous value ranges goes a couple, a few, several, many, then most.  "Several" clearly would have been the best choice given the number of voters in the debated situation. I will be more careful in the future :)

The Missus is so thrilled to have been able to bring a level of measured acceptance to the MIAA board, she's taking me out for dinner tonight. Thanks everyone!

With so many Russ' how do you know which one to choose?

Went to the Rainbow Grill. The missus and I are widening our cuisine interests.

We're just glad you didn't forget your password again this year.

Hmm. I detect a note of sarcasm.

Ooooo, did you get a 6 oz. sizzler? Did you really splurge and add sweet potato fries for $1 more?
Let's go Dutchmen!

I think if we assume playing-time-based promotion from last season, Calvin's lineup will be:

Bult - Nyong - Egekeze - Sensenig - Van Essen

Van Essen and Nyong were not really in the rotation last year, but they were clearly first-in when the benches were opened up. Van Essen occasionally appeared with the game still in doubt.

Ambrose could break into the lineup or rotation, based on being a D2 guy, but he didn't get much playing time in (essentially) two seasons at that level (I have no idea if he was healthy all last season or not). Just being on a D2 roster does not make you a quality D3 contributor, so we will have to see.

VanderWoude and Dirksen got a couple cups of coffee in varsity games. It would not surprise me to see either in the rotation. I would be somewhat surprised if any other returning player featured heavily, but we have lots of minutes to fill.

It is very tough for freshmen to step in right away at the college level, but I am hoping for a couple youngsters to be able to play good minutes this season. We will have to see. Size would be a nice addition so I'm interested to see how Overway, Ewing, and Varnado come along in particular.

Basketball season has started!  Calvin is playing an exhibition game at Ferris state.

Stats are available: https://www.ferrisstatebulldogs.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/boxscores/20221029_9til.xml

Calvin's starters are Egekeze, Bult, VanEssen, Sensenig, and Overway.

Varnado, Ressler, and Nyong are in the rotation.

Overway is a 6'9" freshman center who hit a 3 about one minute into the game.
Ressler is a freshman 6'3"guard.
Varnado is a freshman 6'6" forward.

Eight players were not dressed for the game: Ambrose, VanderWoude, Ewing, Broderick, Morris, Gritters, Potts-Heard, and Leppien. Some of those freshmen are probably JV-only, but Ambrose and VanderWoude could figure for playing time. I believe it was Ewing who had a foot wrapped and was on one of those wheely knee scooter things. Ferris State coach Bronkema mentioned that Calvin had "a couple of injuries" in his postgame comments.

All in all I was rather encouraged after today. I think Calvin's starting lineup will be just fine and I was impressed with the college readiness of both Overway and Varnado. They're both going to have freshmen moments (and did tonight) but will also show a lot of promise. Ressler getting playing time surprised me but he looked OK out there.

Hopefully the three-point shooting at 17% was an aberration and not something we'll see a lot of. If they had made a reasonable percentage this one would have been a game most of the way.

Adrian's 2022-23 MBB roster is up.

https://adrianbulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster

Observed that Kendall Bellamy is back, listed as a grad student.  Gives the Bulldogs a much needed post presence.  I don't think he played last year.  Six freshmen on the roster.

sac

Adrian also get PG Victor Sheffey back, Sheffey should have been all-MIAA two years ago IMO, didn't play enough of the covid year 9 of 16 games.   He was a double-digit scorer.

With Sheffey, Bellamy, Price and Chrisman Adrian has 4 guys that have avg'd double-digits scoring in the last couple years.  They at least have a competitive starting 5 and also returned 3 other Fr who saw a lot of PT last season.   A couple of this years Fr are probably  going to be good down the line.

I think Adrian's in the mix for at least a top half finish.  Put them in the bowl with lets see how Nov/Dec shakes out for them.

I believe we'll get a coaches poll after the weekend.

SVSU 82 Hope 78 F OT

Thomas 27, Quillan 17, Wourman 12, Cheaney 8, Wiegerink 7, Dykhouse 7

For the curious Hope started  Dykhouse, Thomas, Schoonveld, Wiegerink, Quillan.   Wourman saw 31 minutes off the bench.  Fr. Justice Mims and Jr. Devin Cheaney saw around 10 each.   TJ McKenzie did not play due to football, I assume he'd be in the mix for starting or first 2 off the bench.

A good result, indeed. If you'd told me that SVSU was going to scorch the nets for 15 of 26 long-range bombs, while Hope was a meager 23% (and 56% of free throws) I would have thought they'd lose by 25. But then I wouldn't have predicted their outrebounding the bigger Redbirds by 51 to 29 and outscoring them 50 to 14 in the paint. Quillan and Cheaney combining for 25 points was also a pleasant surprise. Also good to see Eli Schoonveld able to contribute 23 minutes.

With TJ McKenzie and new players in the wings, this could be an exciting year--with the Hope men perhaps a tad under-ranked in the preseason poll and the Hope women (after graduating their best players) a tad over-ranked? Next weekend will tell us more.
