SVSU 82 Hope 78 F OT

Thomas 27, Quillan 17, Wourman 12, Cheaney 8, Wiegerink 7, Dykhouse 7

For the curious Hope started  Dykhouse, Thomas, Schoonveld, Wiegerink, Quillan.   Wourman saw 31 minutes off the bench.  Fr. Justice Mims and Jr. Devin Cheaney saw around 10 each.   TJ McKenzie did not play due to football, I assume he'd be in the mix for starting or first 2 off the bench.

Take exhibition games with the usual grain of salt but this seems like a really good result
A good result, indeed. If you'd told me that SVSU was going to scorch the nets for 15 of 26 long-range bombs, while Hope was a meager 23% (and 56% of free throws) I would have thought they'd lose by 25. But then I wouldn't have predicted their outrebounding the bigger Redbirds by 51 to 29 and outscoring them 50 to 14 in the paint. Quillan and Cheaney combining for 25 points was also a pleasant surprise. Also good to see Eli Schoonveld able to contribute 23 minutes.

With TJ McKenzie and new players in the wings, this could be an exciting year--with the Hope men perhaps a tad under-ranked in the preseason poll and the Hope women (after graduating their best players) a tad over-ranked? Next weekend will tell us more.

I agree that Hope is under-ranked.  I think they're a top 10 team.  Evan Thomas  is one of the top players in the country.  Clayton Dykhouse, may be the second best player in the MIAA.  Wourman and Quillan both looked good last night.  Wiegerink, Schoonveld, and McMcKenzie make Hope a legitimate national championship team.  Hope seems to have all the ingredients to be in Fort Wayne at the end of the year.

I watched this game from my phone as my smart TV won't play hudltv streams for some reason.

I'm not sure SVSU was ready for Hope to come out the way they did. Hope started the game up 9-0. SVSU graduated 4 of their 5 starters from last season. Their two players with the most minutes from last season, McIntosh and Barnett, started the game on the bench but played 39 and 29 minutes respectively. SVSU also got 35 minutes from Jiovanni Miles, a transfer that a couple years ago was suspended from D1 UW-Green Bay. SVSU may have played 12 guys, but their best 5 players played the majority of the game. I wonder if they went into the game expecting a more "traditional" exhibition where they could give more minutes to their bench and still win easily. A part of me is disappointed by the opportunities that were there to put this one away, but it was an exhibition, so I'll focus on the positives.

If Hope gets that kind of play from Quillan all year, they are a legit top 10 ten team. Playing the 6'9" guy at center just creates so many opportunities for Evan and Tanner in and out of the paint. They took a D2 opponent to OT despite not shooting very well (5 for 22 from 3).

Wourman and Mims are both going to be fun to watch develop, although I wouldn't be surprised if Wourman is starting over Eli as soon as next weekend. I think Dykhouse, Wourman, and Thomas all on the floor together will be a matchup problem for most D3 teams. They won't play teams that have players like Miles, McIntosh, and Garrett that can stay with them much (or ever?) this season. And the teams that can match them most likely won't be able to out rebound Thomas, Quillan, and Wiegerink. It will be fun to see how they do against Borchert, Plaman, and Booth next Saturday.

I don't want to over-react to one exhibition game, but boy am I excited for next weekend now!

I don't know how many voters share my philosophy, but I tend to default to production as a tiebreaker for preseason balloting.  Obviously Hope is super talented and likely to be very good, but I didn't have them in the Top 25 at the end of last year, so I'd like to see them prove it on the floor (which they'll get the opportunity to do in Week 1) over a team who's say returning a good core of a team that was Top 25 last year.

In other words, teams with an easy opportunity to prove their worth actually get discounted early because of that opportunity.  In my mind, anyway, the polls throughout the year tell both the story of teams rising and falling based on production.  If Hope's actually the 16th best team, but they start at #8, it's going to look like they struggled, when actually we just overestimated them.  I'd rather have them start out of the poll and get to where they belong.

It also hold accountable those teams returning proven talent who don't end up living up to it.  If RMC ends the year at #16, its almost certainly because they didn't live up to what they'd already shown on the court.

Hope's schedule allows for plenty of opportunities to see them against likely tournament competition.

I am 100% sure that is not SVSU's starting 5 they'll roll with this season.   Exhibitions are hard, you never know what the other team is trying to accomplish or who's sitting out because of an injury they want to protect.   All I know is I saw a Hope team compete hard for 45 minutes against a better more talented team and SVSU had to hit some big time shots just to get to OT.  Once there Hope noticeably ran out of gas.

I would have liked to see Hope play more guys if for nothing else just to get a look at them in game action.   I do feel pretty strongly there's a couple guys that didn't play last night that can help them this year.   Maybe running out to a nice lead early put them in position of trying to win the game, idk.   I think a couple big keys this year will be post play and rest for Thomas/Dykhouse.  Hope got 25 and 10 from the two guys mostly playing the 5, not sure they can count on that kind of production game to game but it was nice to see.  Thomas/Dykhouse logged  42/39 minutes.  Both those guys were top 5 in minutes played in the MIAA last year and will likely be again this year.  I think I'd rather they weren't, catching some rest minutes along way will make them better in Feb when you really want them on the floor 90% of the time.   I figured Wourman was a good option to spell one or both of those guys but last night kind of showed what a great trio they make on the floor.  It was interesting.

Oshkosh and Platteville are the two obvious.   I think Stout, Whitewater, North Central, Hanover, Babson and maybe even Wittenberg are fringe tournament squads, likely above average with the tournament being their goal.

I too was very encouraged by what I saw out of the Hope team last night, and was very pleasantly surprised to see the growth of Quillan (he did some good things in very limited time last year, but he obviously invested a ton of off-season work).  Equally impressed with the efforts and poise of the two freshman Wourman and Mims.  Really glad that SVSU streamed it  so we could all enjoy.

Good analysis, Sac. . . . though I doubt that a 40 minute workout in November will leave them less conditioned for games in February. (Still, I, too, look forward to seeing more of the new recruits getting floor time . . . perhaps with some easier games.)

It was like Christmas came early for this Albion basketball fan.  Walking past Kresge after the football game on Saturday, I noticed a bus behind it and people going in.  That's right, I just happened to catch a scrimmage with DePauw!

You'll have to take my scoring with a grain of salt—they reset the scoreboard once during the first half and again at the half.  I paid approximately zero attention to specifics about DePauw players.  Also, I couldn't identify all of the new Brits with their scrimmage jerseys (wrong numbers) and pictures not on the website yet.

More or less as we'd expect, the starters were Garland, Thomas, Armstead-Wilkerson, Winston, and Lucchesi.  Thomas didn't play the second half, with AJ Barden starting in his place.  Barden and Crittendon both played quite a bit.  Four first years played—I'm pretty sure they were Nate Steinman, Kameron Mayes, Beck Willems, and one more (maybe Phil Ragan?), and returners Lamar Lee and Michael Justice (I think) also made appearances.  Also, it looked like a few players may be injured/recovering.

Top scorers were Garland (at least 19), Mayes (I think), Crittendon, and JA-W.

DePauw had just scored to make it 38 to Albion's 36 on the second half scoreboard, so the Brits had the ball with just over 2 seconds left when, no kidding, the power went out in Albion.  We waited a few minutes, but it didn't come back on, so they just ended.  In my head, Albion inbounded the ball, made the long 3 buzzer beater, and won the second half, but I guess we'll never know for sure.  :D

A dominating 93-53 win by Calvin in their season opener with an over matched Grace Christian quintet. There certainly will be growing pains by the Knights, but this is the most athletic hoops team we've seen at Knollcrest in quite some time. There will be growing pains, and Calvin's preseason prediction of a third place finish strikes me as about right, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Calvin wins the post-season conference tournament.

Having watched Jalen Overway play several times in high school, I expected to see him become a dominant force at Calvin. I just didn't think it would be in the opening half of his college career. Jalen totally controlled the paint, scoring 20 the first 20 minutes, on his way to a double/double with 23 and 15.

If I stumbled upon and got to watch a closed Hope scrimmage that I didn't know was happening against a solid team like DePauw, I'd be pretty geeked too! Very fun!
