Overway has shone he knows when to pass as well as when to shoot and led the team in assists.  T
While watching a few minutes I, too, was impressed by what Overway adds to Calvin--not just scoring and rebounding (in abundance) but also drawing double teams which frees up 3 point shooting with his passing. A great post player can help perimeter shooters, as well, and he looks to be such.

As a Hope fan, I'm still hoping that the speed of the Hope guards--who repeatedly broke through Stout's defense this weekend, but not Oshkosh's--will, especially with the return of TJ McKenzie this week, be a key to their success.

I'm surprised not to hear from Hope fans about last night's game.  I saw some of it on the computer screen, but could not see enough to know whether Oshkosh was sharper than the day before or if Hope was not playing quite as sharp a game.  From what I could tell, it appeared that Hope was making a few more mistakes than the day before.   Against a team as good as that, a few bad plays can cause trouble quickly.  I had the feeling that Hope was up to handling them with a stronger performance.

Hope played well the first half, both sides of the ball. They were quicker than OshKosh and created some good looks on offense. OshKosh made back-to-back 3s to start the second half and never looked back.  They just dominated in the paint and Hope seemed to panic a little and played way too much iso/hero ball. Hope's lack of depth really showed, as Clayton, Marcus, Gabe, and Evan all played over 30 minutes. Outside of Wourman, Hope got a total of 36 minutes and 5 points from their bench. OshKosh got 63 and 19. As crisp and quick as they looked in the first half, the second half they looked sluggish, especially on offense.

OshKosh looked like a top 10 team. Calvin notched a really impressive win on their resume.

Jalen Overway of Calvin University was named MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for his performance between November 7-13.

Dark Knight

Jalen Overway is on the d3hoops.com team of the week for last week.

QuoteOverway began his college career with three double-doubles, averaging 27 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in a 3-0 week for Calvin that included a statement win over No. 3 UW-Oshkosh. He shot 67% from the field, 40% from the arc, and 83% from the FT line, dominating early play like few freshman in recent memory

I would've made him the cover image for the story, but he's too new to have any decent photos available yet!

What happened to the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame games that were on Thanksgiving weekend?

No one wanted to play them anymore.

The tournament was much more exciting back when GVSU was involved, and it was a true tournament. When GVSU bowed out (beating up on D3 opponents gives little reward and losing to them holds high risk), the classic shifted to just Calvin and Hope playing Cornerstone and Aquinas.

As Knightslappy said, over the years the pros and cons of playing NAIA opponents just got more and more con and less and less pro. Not to take away the value of playing a quality opponent and the experience earned from doing so, but both teams have gorgeous facilities and enough cache to get good D3 non-conference opponents on their schedules. In place of the Hall of Fame Classic, we got to watch both teams host UW Stout and UW OshKosh last weekend in almost the exact style format as the Hall of Fame Classic. It may be more difficult in future years to fill the November schedule like they were able to this season, but if it means we get year like this one with Stout, Oshkosh, Whitewater, Platteville, North Central, Rockford, Hanover, Wittenberg, and Babson... I'm 100% on board as a Hope fan.

Alas, OshKosh B'gosh capitalizes the K. I was wearing blue jean overalls long before I had ever heard of the town or school. Old habits die hard?

I think it amuses me that you make an effort to capitalize the K...unlike Steven's Point and Stevens Point. LOL

Probably the Dutch in me... some of my family members are very adamant about the proper way of writing surnames that start Van or Van den... which words are capitalized and if there is or is not a space between. My mother was a VanDenOever or van den Oever. OshKosh just looks more correct than Oshkosh, so I guess I never even realized it wasn't.

Noted. (Also, I'm well aware Oshkosh isn't Dutch, and have looked up to see that it is Menominee)

Nearby Oostburg is about as Dutch as you can get in Wisconsin. My kid is a Dutchman and apparently we're proud Dutch Mom and Dad.
