Obviously a sensitive issue. I'll tread lightly. Is there any further discipline for the student who originally said the racial slur? Is it not a racial slur if a black person says it? I've always been curious how a black person can use that word without a care in the world but then once a non-black person says it, the person should lose his job, career, reputation, sponsors etc. By no means am I saying anyone has a right to say that, but a racial slur is a racial slur no matter who says it.

As a white person, my perspective/philosophy on the word in question comes down to two things:
1. It is not for a person who looks like me to ever use that word
2. It is not for a person who looks like me to have an opinion on the acceptability of the word between people who do not look like me.

I'll leave it at that.

Absolutely not the forum for this conversation. Knowing where your allegiances lie, Sarah Manasreh, the chair of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Policy Committee at UWSP might be a better resource for those questions?

I'm genuinely excited for tonight's game. For the first time in a while, I feel like I have no idea how the game will play out. Will someone other than Egekeze, Overway, and Bult step up for Calvin offensively? Will Hope's offense be cohesive or look like a disaster? How close to 100% is Evan Thomas? Will the game be called with a "let em play" mentality or a little tighter? Will the new scoreboard screens be bigger and better or just bigger? :)

Glad we're getting back to basketball on this board.

I agree with HOPEful. It's really tough to guess how this game will turn out. A tough, close, hard-fought contest that goes to the final minute of play, or one where the victor cruises to a win? Seems to me the answer to that depends largely on how well -- or poorly -- Calvin's freshmen respond to the pressure of their first Rivalry game.

The article talked about discipline for the coach. I asked if there was discipline for the player who originally said the racial slur. That's all.

I know it's on YouTube, but why isn't it on WGVU also?  Just curious.

And wow,  what a buttkicking so far...

TUAngola

Trine 62 Olivet 57

Olivet with an almost perfect 1st half, shot over 60%, dominated in the paint. Ali was unstoppable. Trine looked lost both offensively and defensively.
Trine with a much better effort defensively the second half to pull it out. Shut out Ali after the break. Trine still stunk it up offensively. 30% for game.
We're not a #20 team, tonight we looked maybe #200...maybe.  We look physically beat up and it's only the 3rd MIAA game. Each one is a war.

Trine: Jones 20, Cox 12, Megnanglo 12 *the trio shot a collective 15-49 from the field :P*
Olivet: Ali 14, Robinette 11, Upshaw 9, Johnson 9

If you look up the term "Butt-kicking" on Wikipedia, it should have a link to the first half of tonight's Hope/Calvin game.

doc

Calvin was so tough defensively, especially in the 1st half.  Uchenna really shut down Thomas, and Hope looked lost on offense.  Couple that with nearly everything falling for Calvin (Egekeze was 9/9 from 2, 1/1 from 3!!) this one was over early.

I didn't make note of exactly when it happened but it was well into the second half before Calvin fell below 70% shooting. Some of it was shot-making we just haven't seen enough of this year from Calvin but there was a fair bit of disorganized or disinterested defensive play from Hope. I have never seen a Hope team play a rivalry game and look like they did for basically the entire first half.

Indeed. And Evan Thomas doesn't appear to be anywhere near 100%. Of course, having Uchenna Egekeze guard you all night has a way of making any player to be less than 100%. Egekeze and Bult were the two veterans who helped lace the bootstraps on the Knights newcomers in their first Rivalry game. The Hope radio team said this is the largest Calvin margin of victory since their 93-60 over Hope in 1977. The Best Man in Oldknight's wedding--who sat next to me at DeVos tonight--played in that game. That's how long its been.
