Josh Decker, formerly of Kalamazoo College, will transfer to Hope.

WOW!  Not often you see the leading scorer leave his team and move to another within conference.  Decker averaged 14.8pts, shot .424 from 3 (3.3 made 3FG) and .828 from the line, and had 2.8reb in 25 min/game last season.

At this point in my list I have 4 recruits and 1 transfer identified for Hope.  What's unique is it is 5 guards who are all either 6-4 or 6-5.

Jason Beckman wasn't Alma's leading scorer, but he probably would have been had he stayed for his Jr season. Closest comparison I could immediately think of.

Decker is a good player but let's pump the brakes on the Kevin Durant stuff  ::)

I don't think he would have been 2nd team all-conference if he was on Hope last year. That's not meant to be a knock, just that he was probably the top option at Kzoo and wouldn't have been that at Hope.

I think its unlikely Josh gets quite as many shots up for Hope as he did at Kzoo, I think he'll still be among Hope's top 3 offensive players.  I'm most interested that Hope now has a career 40+% 3pt shooter who seems to be scratching the surface on how good he can be at this level.  Time will tell.  Many players make big leaps between year 2 and year 3, as you mentioned previously Beckman who went from solid backup PG/SG at 23 min per game, #3 scorer at Alma to Star #1 at Hope, granted with a year off in between.

I consider Decker to be a #3 at Hope, its kind of interesting that the combined 3pt percentage of last years 3,4,5 starting positions (Thomas, Wiegerink, Quillan) would actually go down but only slightly with (Decker, Wiegerink, Quillan)   but attempts would go way up.   Decker shot about 40 more 3's than any Hope player attempted last year and about 100 more than Evan Thomas.

Jake DeHaan from Grand Rapids South Christian, highly coveted by both Hope and Calvin has decided to play football at Toledo.

Sac, replace Thomas' 27% 3-point shooting with Josh Decker's 42% and the combined percentage would go down? (Perhaps I'm missing something here?)

It never ceases to make me chuckle whenever I'm reminded how many teams view Hope as their "rival". It's probably just the product of when your team is having some success, without a true rival, your "rival" becomes the team at the top. But that doesn't explain why it tends to be Hope and not Calvin who most MIAA teams seem to view as their rival. I've been to "rivalry" games against Hope at Albion, Alma, Kzoo, and Trine. Olivet often moves the Hope game to the old gym to have more of a rivalry feel. Is it because of football that these teams have developed more of a "rivalry" feeling with Hope and not Calvin?

This is how I feel. Hope really struggled to score in spurts last season, especially when Evan was out with injury.  I think Decker is a very nice option to fill the empty 3 spot and a starting five of Dykhouse, Wourman, Decker, Wiegerink, and Quillan feels very promising. Add Schoonveld to that mix, and with all due respect to Garland and Megnanglo, the best two players in the MIAA might play for Calvin, but the next 5 could play for Hope.
