Denison 72 Kalamazoo 64 F

Both of these were quality efforts versus decent teams, both Adrian and Kalamazoo had leads deep into the 2nd halves. Altoona was picked 1st in the AMCC in their coaches poll. Denison was picked 3rd in the NCAC with one first place vote.

But, alas, MIAA begins the season 0-4.

Final from Cincinnati:  Trine 85 Hanover 63

Starters: F Garland, C Garland, Pahl, Smylie, Megnanglo.  The Albion transfers were really good tonight, Cortez finishes with 20 and Fred with 16.  Manny finishes with 14, 8 reb, 5 blk, he looked much more confident in his abilities.  Other 2 starters, Grant and Aidan, were both solid with 9 pts each.  Cox, Tucker and newcomer Moore were the main rotation guys tonight.  Brent didn't seem to get into the flow much.  Since we're not deep inside Coach Miller has him spelling Manny, at least tonight.  Against bigger teams I'm sure they will both need to be on the court together more often.  Drew Moore has skills, shots looked good, rim was unkind, finished with 4 in his Thunder debut.

Despite some sloppy play against a worthy opponent (the home team logged 14 turnovers when it seemed more like 20 TO's), Calvin came away with a 75-64 victory over Denison yesterday afternoon at VNA. It was a good first game test for Calvin, playing an above average opponent that had their key players back from last year (their top 5 scorers from a year ago returning). Calvin never trailed but rarely led by more than single digits until the final minutes of play. While not quite as talented as the Knights, the Denison squad reminded me a bit of the Franklin team that lost by only two points to Calvin, when the Knights made their 2000 D3 championship run--a veteran squad that plays hard, plays together, and makes precious few mistakes.

In the end, too much Jalen Overway in the post, combined with timely 3-point shooting by Luka Ressler, was more than Denison could handle. Overway finished with 24, Egekeze 12, and Ressler with 11 to lead the way. Dension was led by Heath and Radke, scoring 17 and 13 respectively. The Calvin newcomer who impressed me most was Trip Riemersma. While his 6 points in 18 minutes might seem ordinary, I thought Trip's athleticism, quickness and good decision making was evident.

Alma defeats Oberlin 78-72 in their home opener. Really nice win for Fitz and the Scots.

Colton Meister was an ANIMAL in this game. 30 points and 10 boards on 14-22 shooting. Always felt there was potential for Colton to do this, but this felt like it came out of nowhere. If he can do this again, the Scots feel like a contender for a home MIAA tournament game. They have lacked post presence the past few years, so it'll be nice for the Scots to have a formidable front-liner this winter.

Trine wraps up second game of the Lauren Hill Tip-Off Classic with a win over the hosts:  Trine 71 Mt. St. Joseph 54

Didn't seem to be as in sync today as yesterday.  We didn't get much from the perimeter, but dominated points in the paint and on the fast break.  We're very good when we can force turnovers and get out and run.  We struggled defending MSJ post player Luke Collinsworth.  He has a big body and is good at creating space.  Curiously we elected not to put Manny on Luke, so he had size advantage inside most of the game.  Coach put Brent back in the starting lineup today, he played better than yesterday, especially in the second half.  With 3 new players in the 8 man rotation it's going to take some time to find our identity offensively.  Defensively we still employ the same switching man defense with traps as last year.  It helps having a 6'8 center with the quickness to switch to a 5'10 guard and hang with him.  The Thunder return to Angola 2-0 to start the season, home opener is this coming Thursday against Franklin.

Trine: F Garland 16, Cox 13, Megnanglo 13, C Garland 11  *Aidan Smylie did not score but led the team with 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals*
MSJ: Collinsworth 23, Cluxton 8, Hammonds 7

MIAA is 6-8 but 6-4 after a bit of rough start.

A very encouraging win for Hope, against a team that, with essentially the same line-up, last year beat Hope 90 to 79.

With 8½ minutes left, Hope led by 67 to 42, before Hope slowed down and Manchester's Bryant Smith (30 points) began blistering the nets. Two new Hope players--frosh Parker Hovey (with the muscular body of a linebacker) and sharp-shooting transfer Josh Decker--both made excellent contributions, as Marcus Wourman sat out with a healing foot.

Agree it was an encouraging opening game with some excellent contributions from the newcomers, and stellar games from Quillan and Wiegerink!  Hovey had an impressive 11 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, and 5 steals in his first collegiate game.   I think the one thing that sticks out as an item I'm sure the coaches will want to address is the 17 offensive rebounds they gave up to the much smaller Manchester team.

I was wildly encouraged. Hovey looks great. Wiegerink took a step forward.  I thought even Mims/Nocek/Wagar took steps forward from last year?

Ball movement was great.

They had ~5 lazy turnovers in the 2nd half. And the O-Boards problem FDF mentioned.

Clean a few things up + Wourman and there is a lot to like.

I was very skeptical of that looking at the box last night.  Manchester did take a lot of shots so lots of rebounds to be had and many were of the long rebound variety.

He also had two uncredited blocks, one very obvious, one he got a fingertip on a jump shot that airballed.   He's going to fill alot of stat sheets.

Perhaps my biggest complaint against Coach Mitchell during his time as Hope's coach has been the lack of continuity and flow on offense. The anemic offense that has reared its head all too often is usually accompanied by flat footed players standing around the parameter when the ball isn't in their hands and eventually being forces to jacking up a contested three as the clock is expiring. Hope is going to miss Evan Thomas greatly, but I'm hoping the lack of a true alpha dog on offense means a greater commitment across the board to ball movement and team offense.

I also questioned the stats compared to what I saw live.  I suppose 10 blocks (in reality I think it was closer to 14 because I think they missed couple for Tanner as well) also leads to additional offensive rebounds (assuming I am correct that a block recovery is a rebound).

Yes, it is. For statistical purposes, every field goal attempt and every free throw attempt must be accounted for with either a made shot or a rebound. (Hence, the deadball rebound category for missing the first of a two-free-throw sequence, and the team rebound category for a missed field goal attempt that goes out of bounds.)
