So last week both Adrian and Alma lost to SVSU.  Both of those results are reflected in the current MIAA schedule, results and W/L records.  But both teams have a total of 12 non-con games listed which would put them over the "legal" limit by 1.  I've been assuming those were both exhibitions for the MIAA schools, but when the league lists them as actual contests, then I have to wonder...

The Grace Christian game does not appear on Adrian's schedule on their athletics website.

Thanks to you and ziggy for the clarifications - and those non-D3 games don't really mean much anyway.

So the MIAA versus D3 is now 28-18!  Hope/Trine/Calvin are 16-0, Kazoo is 4-3, and Alma and Albion both 3-3.  Only 2 teams under .500 so far.  Last year after 46 games, the MIAA was 23-23 - nice improvement.

Is it surprising Wheaton (IL) is unranked and 1-6 after finishing 6th in the final 22-23 poll?  Did they lose quality players to graduation or the portal?

No, it's not the least bit surprising. Wheaton lost seven of its top eight players in minutes, points, and rebounds from last season's team -- including a first-team All-American in Tyson Cruickshank and another All-CCIW first-teamer in TJ Askew. Everybody who follows the CCIW knew that there would be a big dropoff for Wheaton, and that includes the league's coaches. They picked Wheaton to finish a very distant fifth in the CCIW preseason poll. And Wheaton's problems have been exacerbated by the fact that the lone returning member of that top eight, 6'4" senior guard Nick Schiavello, was out with an injury and didn't make his season debut until last week.

Hope had Whitewater on the ropes. They were up 76-70 with 34 seconds to go and lose 79-76. Ouch!

Amazing (and painful) ending, as Whitewater--when a ESPN gamecast would have shown Hope with a 99 percent chance of winning--scored 12 points in the last 46 seconds (not a typo), enabled by WW's stifling end-of-game defense and an all-American calibre 35 point performance by Miles Barnstable.

Heartbreaking . . . yet, for Hope to be in a position to defeat one of last year's final four teams on a cold 4 of 20 3-point shooting and night, with but 64% free throw shooting, gives an indication of this team's potential.

Although frosh Parker Hovey only had 6 points, his tough defense and nine rebounds also bodes well.

Brutal way to lose. Absolutely played a winning game for all but 40 seconds. Broke through the full court press all game just fine until the last minute.

And Miles Barnstable is an ice cold killer. Hope will wish they could have this one back for a while.

I will say, overall, the refs called a game that favored Hope. They really let them play a physical game.

The technical foul calls on the bench for reacting to a terrible call under the basket and then again for what I believe was of the four-letter word variety, ended up being the difference in the game.

Hope loses a game they probably wish they didn't when it gets to March. Obviously a long season to go, but these are games that move you into the "comfortably in" category.

A little disappointed in Hope's press break plays at the end. Credit to WW for sure, but Mitchell had two different timeouts to draw up a play to get the ball in bounds, and neither were very good.

Have to win these next two games at home before they hit the road

Agree - the inablity to inbound the ball multiple times in the last 30 seconds was a real dagger.  The WW press (in both halves) really changed the game. The first half was more about slowing Hope down, and it took them completely out of their offense for awhile.  Second half, especially late, it created turnovers and points for WW.  Tough loss, but no time to lick our wounds with UW Platteville on Saturday - another BIG challenge for the Dutchmen.

Were all eight out of eligibility?  Are any of them playing elsewhere this season?

One is on the roster at Eastern Michigan. I believe the others are graduated and/or out of eligibility.

Trine 79 UW-Stevens Point 78

Trine survives a nail biter in Angola.  I thought we played very well thru the first 30 minutes and built up a 15 point lead.  Then the shots stopped falling for the Thunder, especially from outside, and at the same time Stevens Point got hot and had the momentum on their side.  They fought all the way back from that 15 point deficit.  With the game tied at 76 Grant Pahl came up huge when he knocked down a 3 with 35 seconds to go.  The Pointers got to within one on a couple makes at the FT line.  On the inbounds pass they fouled Brent Cox, who has been struggling at the line.  Brent missed the front end of the 1 and 1 and UWSP got the rebound and called time out with 17 seconds left.  It appears their first two options on their offensive possession weren't open so then ended up driving the lane with floater that just rimmed out. We didn't get a handle on the rebound but were able to knock the ball off of UWSP with 0.1 to go.

WIAC teams are tough.  UWSP was well coached and very skilled offensively.  Butler and Abdul-Wahid were outstanding today.  I am glad we are scheduling these types of non-conference games, they will only make us better in the MIAA.

Bit of bad news is we are without Emmanuel Megnanglo.  He suffered a non-basketball related hand injury this past week.  He was in street clothes with his arm in a sling.  The guys stepped up in his absence, but it makes a huge difference defensively not to have that rim protector in the game.  I'm hoping we get him back soon though.
