Alma vs. Calvin

The game is at Calvin and Knollcrest isn't the easiest place to play at.  From what I have read, haven't seen either team play, Alma is better at defense than the Knights are.  I have to go with the Knights on this one.

Alright Sac, I was going to just search the D3hoops site for information about the tourney format, but was not having any luck. I'm sure I heard this 9 months ago and now completely forgot, but the first two rounds of the tourney will now be at one host site? Did everything expand back to 64 teams to get more at large bids in? I guess that means no more 5 game runs to a championship, but if it will now be an even bigger deal to battle for getting to host a weekend, I'm sure glad that Hope has the DeVos as the ace up their sleeve in convincing the NCAA.

Also speaking of DeVos, I was thinking to myself on Wednesday that it was a bit too quiet. I think it will be fine though since that was with a Dew Crew of about 20 and the game was such a yawner that I just skipped the second half to see the Bush/Young fest. I do worry that with more open space overhead the place can't shake quite like the cramped Civic, but when Albion and Calvin show up, I'm sure there will be enough people in the seats and they'll be charged up enough to get loud.

My past experience is that Knollcrest is like a tomb during "Interim", so the crowd should be only five to six time the crowd in Cappaert Gymnasium.  The Scots might actually enjoy playing in front of people  ;D

Does anyone else feel that Hope is seriously getting the short end of the stick in the polls? I know that polls don't matter til the end of the season and blah blah blah, but I am sick of teams losing and staying ahead of Hope, with the exception of Wittenberg. After IWU and Amherst losing this week, and Wooster losing last week, things need to change.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Maybe I am being superficial feeling that rankings matter that much, but I just don't understand their rationale on how they rank these teams sometimes. Anyway, there is my rant for the day... good luck to all MIAA teams in action this weekend!

That's pretty interesting that you want to complain about IWU and Amherst, considering we haven't voted since those games took place.

How far would you have us drop Wooster for losing in overtime to a Top 20 team, considering they have a win against a Top 5 team?

As for Hope, half of their schedule has been against non-Division III teams. What are Division III voters (or regional rankers) to measure? At least Hope had four in-region non-conference games this year -- that's more than they had the previous three years combined.

Thanks for the insight Sac, you make excellent points. It is pretty entertaining to follow the d3hoops poll, just impossible to understand - that's where my frusteration lies, that's all.

Anyway, random questions from the new guy.

1. where is the modify button on my old posts?
2. what is "karma" all about?

I searched the "help" section but didn't find anything...

thanks in advance :)

Yeah, as others have said, newbies don't get access to modify or delete. We have indeed had problems with hit-and-run posters doing that.

Karma is later, as previously mentioned.

Just re-read the story.  Since they apportion one slot for every 6.5 eligible teams, can we reasonably expect further tourney growth of a slot every year or two, considering the number of provional teams in the pipeline?

sac

Alma/Calvin hinges on if Meckes plays.  I think Calvin wins with Meckes but maybe not as comfortably as they'd like.

Alma's is looking for the most wins for their program in one season since ...........a while, and its only January.

In case people have forgotten the last 6 trips to Olivet for Hope have not as exactly gone as planned.  I would have considered Hope comfortable favorites in all 6 of these games I think.

'00   Olivet 93   Hope 86 (ot) (A)
'01   Olivet 85   Hope 63 (A)
'02   Olivet 82   Hope 81 (ot) (A)
'03   Hope 90   Olivet 73 (A)
'04   Hope 79   Olivet 63 (A)
'05   Olivet 67   Hope 65 (A)

The '01 loss was the worst for a Hope team since the early 70's.

I certainly expect Hope to win, but the road in the MIAA can be tricky sometimes.

That place ought to feel like a  locker room for Hope's players and fans.

Considering all the arm twisting it took to get back to a more respectable 57, I'd say fat chance.

Mr. Ypsi

Thanks!

Yeah, I didn't exect beyond 64 (though d1 has 65)!

BogeyMan

Mr. Coleman,
Wooster should drop as many spots and Baldwin-Wallace gained.  (5)
You have not taken into consideration that Wooster lost at home, which makes the loss much worse.  A home loss this early in the season is worth a considerable drop in the polls.

Flea

With NCAA D3 up to 450-plus teams I could see the tourney field increase a few more teams . . . or how about a NIT-type second tournament?

Picket Fence

Alma and Calvin have the same record.  It's amazing how the two schools can look at that fact and have two completely different emotions regarding it.  Alma's has to be elated and Calvin has to be disappointed.  Although Calvin lost 3 of their games without Meckes and two of the four are to D2 schools, they still have to be disappointed with 4 losses this early.
Don't get caught watching the paint dry.
