Greg:

You're bang on with that bit of early American history. Sadly, the Dutch hankering for vander hides led to the near-extinction of those exotic beasts in the middle-Atlantic states ... colonies. Vanders are now a protected species; in certain parts of the Midwest, they graze peacefully amongst the tulips.

...leaving behind only Oliebollen as a rememberance of their passing.

I never realized oliebollen were vander by-products. Vander must be very fastidious creatures to leave them so neatly piled.

BogeyMan

Here a few neutral observations from last night's Albion vs Hope game.
    - I am a little old fashion, but I still believe a teams shooting percentage has a lot to do with the defense that is played on them.  Albion shot 57% for the game!  I thought there was a lack of intensity by Hope at the defensive end.
    - Is Bailey that good or is Immink that bad.  Immink could not defend Bailey.  Bailey had 13 points, 8 assists and 1 turnover.  That is a pretty good assist to turnover ratio.
    - It looked to me like Albion was better prepared by scouting and coaching than Hope???????????  Albion knew what was coming at the defensive end!
    - Going into the game I thought the post play would neutralize each other.  Crawford is very good but Hope has two good post players.  Stats for the post starters were 30 points, 16 rebounds for Albion and 27 points, 10 rebounds for Hope.    Not much difference, but enough to give an edge to Albion.
   -  As far as the posts from Hope fans on the officiating goes, I couldn't disagee with you more.  Why is it whenever someone loses a big game they want to blame the officials?  That game was officiated the way a championship game is supposed to be officiated.  They let the players play and did not get in the way of determining the outcome.  I've seen too many officials in a game like last night want a be a part of determining the outcome.   The two illegal screens that I remember were made by two different officials, not one official trying to make a point.  Usually a team takes a hint when the first illegal screen is called.  To have two or three called on them in a short period of time tells me they weren't taking the hint from the officials.
    - Hope is a very talented basketball team.  Albion was much better last night.

FDF, if I remember my early American history correctly, the Dutch established the colony of New Amsterdam and seized the Swedish colony of Fort Christina (Delaware) in order to trade with the local Indians for their beaver pelts and vander hides.

Please tell me you didn't just make that post  ;D

Having studied the history of Dutch in America, I'm pretty sure that they served the meat coming from the vander hides with ketchup... ::)

Was under the weather last night and did not make it to any games...

Very glad to see the Hornets win the game.  Looked like a balanced effort, and the box score indicates that it was close throughout...

On to Tri-State this weekend.  This is a very dangerous game.  It looks like Tri-State whipped Olivet, after playing IPFW fairly tough.  This board did not mention that game, but Tri-State was actually up at halftime.  It looks as though they are playing well, so winning down there will be tough for the Hornets.

Check again--nowhere did anybody say that "the outcome was determined by officials." In fact, I specifically remember FDF saying quite the opposite:

As devossed said - there was a 5 minute stretch in the first half where the officials decided to call the illegal screen on Hope 4 times. I know that didn't change the outcome of the game, but that's 4 tunrovers at a time Albion's lead went from 8 to 16. The strange thing is they never called another one, and I didn't see any difference in the way the screens were being set. :-\

So, Mr. Bogeyman, you must have been in the line at the concession stand, because Tommy Bray called four of them on the Dutchies himself, while letting it go on the other end. And as FDF said, he stopped altogether and didn't do it again, while the rest of the screens were no different.

It was not the reason Hope lost--they got outplayed...But it was a noticeable difference that made the margin Albion had double in a short time.

Interesting quote from Coach VanWieren in the GR Press today about the game last night:

Van Wieren said he thought his players' shooting woes were a result of playing in a high-pressure game. "How do you miss such simple shots? Shots that you and I could make," Van Wieren said. "It's the pressure of the game. It's unexplainable."

I wasn't there but posters on this board have said Hope missed some easy shots.  Pressure?  Or maybe the atmosphere at Kresge?

Aren't they intertwined? Pressure is generally augmented by atmosphere - that's how it was in the Civic! Anyway, let's move on from Hope/Albion and talk about Hope/Calvin or any other interesting game this week. Any new hype?

hopefan

I know it's been mentioned before, but the College Sports Network is carrying the GAME on Saturday afternoon.  This is not just the satellite channel received at the Sports Bars across the country, but a channel that Direct TV subscribers have access to.  This allows me to go see my local Maryville team play here in St. Louis, come home and watch Hope Calvin on my DVR.  And yes, I'll TiVO an extra HOUR just in case it goes to triple OT!!!  To all fans from both schools - WAVE to ME, or put up a Hi Hopefan sign!!!!!!!
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Pat Coleman

I'll be watching. I have to upgrade to the sports pack but it's worth the $12 for the month to get it.

Hopefully Bucknell/Holy Cross (the 1 pm game on CSTV) doesn't go to OT!  We don't need Calvin-Hope to be "joined in progress."  For more on CSTV and the alumni sites, see www.calvin.edu/sports

BogeyMan

devossed and flying dutch fan - I'm glad we agree the outcome was not decided by the officials.  No problem with that.  As an ex-official I stick up for the officials more times than I should.

Very interesting quote by the Hope Coach.  Does anyone think the presence of Crawford could of been another reason why so many shots were missed in the first half?  Hope hit most of their bunnies in the second half.  Crawford was much better than I thought!

Good luck to Hope this weekend!
