MIdubs,

The Brits have been doing just fine in the transfer section with ol'Kresge as their home. Here is just a recent list of transfers

Brandon Crawford
Lonnie Fulse
Garret Gibbons
Ben "El Presidente" Feeney
Andrew Neidlinger
Brett Quaile

In the business world, Toyota trying to follow the footsteps of Ford, hired their graveyard shift custodian as their new CEO. Toyota's press secratery was quoted "If it can work for such a great insitution as the Detorit Lions, it is something worth doing."

I would assume transferring could be separate from a redshirt though. I was actually wondering if rules might even require that he not play for his new school this year, but apparently that's not the case. I don't know that he's necessarily on the roster yet if he's sitting on the bench in a tie, I'm sure they could call him their ump-teenth student assistant if they needed to get around that. The rule about using up 4 years of eligibility in 5 years doesn't apply at the D3 level, but I figured that might be mixed up in this since he isn't coming from a D3 school.

I'm sure GVW does know what the allowable options are though, so I guess we'll know if he's going to play as soon as he shows up to a game in shorts.

Transfering down levels you only have to be academically eligible from the instiution you are coming from. Division III doesn't have a long list of rules, infact one coach made it his mission to try and break a rule in Div III, and after 5 years he still had not accomplished his mission.

To the best of my knowledge, the 4 in 5 years rule is for all NCAA  academic institutions regardless of level.  Exceptions are made in the case of Miltary assignments, church missions (BYU rule), peace corps involvement and pregnancy for female athletes.

Ran into the head college scout for the Green Bay Packers at lunch. He said they will be drafting an offensive lineman from Michigan State with their first round pick. Some guy named Tony Mandarich. They feel he will anchor the o-line for the next 10 seasons.

However, I could see some high school seniors looking to this as an opportunity to play with the big boys

Is getting in in garbage time an opportunity to "play with the big boys?"  Sorry, I couldn't resist the opportunity for wordplay.

Old Snake

Van Solkema is instantly elibible because he transferred from a DI school.  He has already lost a yr.'s elibigibility because he played at EMU lst semester, so I am quite sure he will have 2 yrs. left regardless of whether he plays this semester.  Playing so many transfers can be a slippery slope.  There can be definite short-term benefits, but also potential morale/chemistry problems with players who have been there for the long haul.  The most interesting case like this I have seen lately is Jeremy File, the former Hanover-Horton  star who played first semester last yr. at WMU, then transferred to Olivet and played second semester last yr., and plays this yr. at Spring Arbor(NAIA).  Three schools in 3 successive semesters without missing a beat.

Old Snake is correct.....VanSolkema has 2 years left, this semester counts as his Sophomore season just as it did at EMU.  I'm pretty excited to see him play, it won't mess with chemistry at all in my opinion.  The truth is Hope doesn't have great offensive chemistry at the moment anyhow.  There is SO much room for improvement its kind of scary.  They could use another gaurd.

One thing I think people are missing with the Hope transfers, I believe these are all kids Hope recruited in High School.  All of them took scholarships because........well duh, have you seen tuition lately?  All except for Partridge are local kids.   So its not as if these kids are coming out of nowhere and suiting up for the Dutchmen.  They are familiar with the program and the school.

I admit 4 1/2 in one season is incredibly high and unusual, I don't think it will happen this summer.

If anything I think Hope now has a truckload of kids that can tell recruits just how great that scholarship job really is at D1.

Hope's had transfers in the past, Kyle Phelps, Josh Cannon and Ryan Klingler come to mind.

Because you are never sure what that school to the West is doing, I placed a call to their Registrar's office and through the Freedom of Information Act, I found out that Immink got a 3.0 in Wooden Shoe Design 404. He is currently enrolled in Windmill Construction 220. Good Luck with the Academics Greg.

While those particular classes are not offered at Hope, I'll admit there are some pretty "soft" classes available.  Balances out the tougher ones, everyone needs a little beginning badmitton in their lives.  ;D

Someone told me a while back Immink is getting his teaching certificate, which is usually a 5 year program anyway.  I could be completely wrong.........geez its been a long time since I had to register for classes.

Straight from Wolf Blitzer on CNN:
N.O.W. president has come out with a statement requesting Sac resign his All-American posting status based on his gender insensitive post about only seeing 2 women's basketball games in 15 years.

Quote

Guilty, but I actually have seen a couple more than that.  I saw most of the Benedictine game earlier this year and a half of a half vs Tri-State.

The women's games always conflict with the men's games, and I never liked the ladies old home the Dow Center as a venue.

Is that enough of an excuse?

Well I'm sure I'll see more of the ladies in the new place.

.......if Coach Mo recruits more woman who look and play like Bria Ebels I'll go to more games for sure. ;D

As I understand it for a two semester sport like basketball a player has to be a full time student the first semester (minimum 12 credits) and taking classes towards graduation second semester (ie Leinart, any 2 credit class is enough). Immink is an education major and took 12 credits last semester and was originally planning on taking one 2 credit course this semester. Whether that is what he ended up doing I am not sure.

Thanks DC thats what I thought about Greg.

Here's an excerpt from the Holland Sentinel

The game marked the first appearance for VanSolkema, who left a Division I scholarship at Eastern Michigan last week to enroll at Hope. He watched the game in street clothes.

VanSolkema, a 6-foot-1 guard from Grand Rapids, has begun practicing with the team and could play this season, Van Wieren said.

"He's easing into the Hope College basketball program right now," Van Wieren said. "He's not dressing this week. He'll start dressing when he knows the system, knows the plays. I'll decide when he starts dressing. We'll see what happens."

Couple Thursday ramblings

Adrian is a much younger team than I think we realize and they handle the ball like a young team.  Adrian is asking guys who were roll players a year ago to score.  I think Adrian will struggle all year.

The last two games Hope has held two of the leagues best shooters  Andy Draayer and Billy Collins to ZERO points in back to back games.  Thats amazing.

With a win Saturday, Calvin could be in a 3 way tie for 1st, even after looking very mediocre for stretches of the season.  Even their own fans admit this.  The more things change.......

Wouldn't it be something if Calvin won by 18 over Albion.  Then we'd have Albion over Hope by 18, Hope over Calvin by 18 and Calvin over Albion by 18.

Crucial 3 game stretch for Hope with 3 consecutive road games at up and coming Alma, Tri-State and the always tough trip to AAC and the Hornets.  Hope can't sleep on any of those games.  After this stretch the schedule sets up nicely with 4 of their last 6 at home including the Britons.

I don't know who decides the karma ratings, but I believe Carl Yastrzemski should have the highest karma rating ever awarded.  Just like my man Earl says"It's all about karma."

This is very true. I think if Van Solkema would suit up for the Dutchmen, he would probably be back up point gaurd and I think GVW would put Partridge at either the 2 or 3 (still probably 2nd string). The kid can score and GVW isn't letting him at the 1 spot. It would make for some fun bball to watch if the Dutchmen can have the same offensive success as they are having on the other side of the floor.

Quick question, why does Kzoo have 21 players on their roster?  Do they all play?  Are they all on varsity?

Mike Bailey of Albion has really developed into a player. I remember watching him during his Fr. year on JV and thinking he would be suiting up for Athletes and Ashabi in the A-League Intramural program his So. year.

Hey, how come nobody has noticed yet that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been paroled from Red Dot Penitentiary? This is big news, people. How long can it be now before the MIAA's favorite adipose-laden comedian himself returns to posting here?

Incidentally, "Athletes and Ashabi" is a great name for an intramural team.

I dont know how much it actually is the Hope D.  Billy Collins only scored a couple against Calvin and Andy Draayer put up another doughnut last night against Olivet.  Here's to hoping Andy breaks that slump Saturday at Albion.
