Someday karma will change and Hope will win all the last second shot thrillers.

Sac, I assume you are referring solely to the Hope/Calvin rivalry.

Yes I was.  I cannot remember a single last second win for Hope vs Calvin in my time where Hope won the game with a shot.  The only thing close was 97 in the MIAA tournament when Holstege stole the game away with 4 points in the final minute, but Winkle missed a very makable 15 footer with several tips on the rebound.  Calvin had 15 seconds to set that play up.

I must say I found Doug's post game pronouncement that last night's affair was the greatest in his 40 years of broadcasting Calvin/Hope games to be hyperbole, no doubt influenced by the stunning nature of winning a game with a last second shot to give an underdog Calvin their only lead of the game.

Honestly I don't think Mr. Wentworth was that far off, for pure effort this was a beauty.  The defense was great and I felt like both teams were pretty much on empty at the end.  People will poiint to the shotting %'s being low but that had everything to do with the near total lack of inside post games by either team.

I also think Mr W realizes just how great the Knights played and had to play to beat this Hope squad.  He's a pretty sharp guy.

I don't think Doug was far off either (remember that I also wrote that Wednesday's game deserves to be in the top 5). It's just that it is too easy to anoint a game "the greates in my 40 of broadcasting Calvin/Hope" in the heat of the moment. I believe the perspective time gives is necessary before making that statement. If Doug can still make that statement a year from now I won't question him on it. He is a pretty sharp guy, understands and communicates well the pulse of the series, and has been an excellent voice for The Rivalry for 4 decades. It will be a sad day when he puts down the microphone for the last time.

Someone else suggested that we make a list of "The Greatest Games of Calvin/Hope Basketball." Before we do that we would need to agree on the criteria and the value to be placed on each element. In no particular order I would suggest 1) the magnitude of the consequences of winning and losing, 2) the quality of play, 3) the surprise provided by the team that did win (i.e., upset value), 4) the closeness of the game, and 5) an amazing finish.

KnightSlappy:

I don't know about your comment on Dozie and Crawford.  Pretty strong comment for not having much statiscal information to go with it!  Will Dozie win the MIAA MVP over Crawford?  You better compare rebounds and points per game.  The value of Crawford to Albion and the value of Dozie?

Sorry Old Knight, I consolidated your thoughts for easier digestion in a column-like format. (I'm visually-challenged)

Let's then start with the more obvious in recent memory: 1) Wed night 2) Hope '03(?) conference tourney at Albion, where Veenstra missed shot at buzzer 3) Foltice (00?) long three pointer to propel victory at Civic Center, complete with GVW halftime technical that turned the momentum 4) Winkle's prayer from halfcourt ('99?) 5) Meulenberg's 36 at Knollcrest ('97?) 6) Any games from 1990-1992 that featured 3 of the best ever to play D-3 hoops in Honderd, Elliot, Gugino.

If anybody has more details or correct years, feel free to correct me. I look forward to everybody else's thoughts, and will reserve a spot in the top 5 for Hope's 104-102 OT thriller 50+ years ago that still have people chewing...

So, where'd those other letters go? ???

You're right--I liked it at first, but then after meditating I figured it wasn't the best--thus warranting deletion.

"If at first you don't succeed, you're not Chuck Norris."

I cant believe Chuck Norris looks so young, yet hes so old....guess I should have kept doing martial arts too ;D

Anyway quick question, to anyone that wanted to listen to the Albion/Kalamazoo broadcast, could you get it to work, because I sure haven't been able to.  If anyone knows the score of the Albion game, please give me an update!

Sorry--wouldn't work for me either, on 2 separate computers. Neither would Calvin/Olivet.

That's a pretty good list devossed. I had forgotten about the overtime game at Albion when Veenstra injured his eye--and I was at that one. I guess forgetting it has something to do with being on the losing side, or maybe it's simply because I'm an old Knight. I would add to that list the NCAA tournament game at the Civic (I think in 1990) when a little used freshmen named Chris Knoester drilled some big baskets to advance the Knights to a sectional at Wittenberg, I believe. It was from there that Calvin advanced to their first final four. And to show that I at least try and be evenhanded in my memories, I point again to the 1965 104-102 double OT game at the Civic won by a Hope freshmen's 2 free throws with no time on the clock. I won't even make any gratuitous swipes about a "tainted" Hope victory. See, Greg, the tape worm is dying.

bulldogalum

Hope makes a layup at the buzzer to take a 43-34 lead over Adrian at the half.  Sounds like the Bulldogs are playing well, but Hope has been making enough shots in the latter part of the first half to keep the Bulldogs at arm's length.  Also of interest to fans of the Dutch, Van Solkema has made his debut for the Dutch, with 4 first half points (I think).

Still waiting on the Albion/Kzoo score....if anyone ever finds out before it ends, let me know...... ;D

Dark Knight

Albion leading Kalamazoo by 27-26 at the half (I think).

Not only doesn't the broadcast work, the feedback form on their site is broken.

Hey Pat, thanks for the clarification.  I thought something was wrong with my computer, saved me from throwing it about 3 sets of stairs ;D
