I'm not sure I have enough pages to do that Dew

Great Lakes Region current ranking

1. Wooster---lost to OWU......I really don't see them losing this spot, they still have the best record in the region (according to the NCAA)

2. Bald Wally---lost to Capital.....probably shouldn't drop with everyone losing around them.  Hurts their hosting chances though big time.

3. Wittenberg----lost to Wabash....Should drop at least 2 spots in the next poll, still a solid C candidate.

4.  Carnegie-Mellon  lost last night......had better drop to #6 despite their high QOWI

5.  Calvin won twice shouldn't be any lower the #3
5.  Hope won Wed, should win tonight shouldn't be any lower than #3

Today's losses just sort of mix up the order in which teams will be presented for C consideration.......of course the tournaments next week really get interesting now.

My prediction for next wed ranking
1. Wooster
2. Bald Wally
3. Calvin and Hope (the precedent was set)
5. Witt
6. Carnegie Mellon

If anything today's reults just go to show anything can happen and nothing should be taken for granted.  February basketball is awesome. 8)

Mr. Ypsi

sac,

You're apparently forgetting that Bald Wally ALSO lost on Wednesday.  They WILL drop.

SAC,
Thanks for the amazingly quick update for my question.

Big props to Kalamazoo for making a nice run at Calvin today...that is a team you never want to play in the MIAA tourney

I step away from this site for a day and come back to find that my dutchmen are on the flipping BUBBLE!!!??!?

I guess my question about Albion making it in is now moot w/out winning the tourn championship

Either way...things are starting to get VERY VERY intersting...Let's go Hope!

David Collinge

Calvin has a better QoWI than Hope, a better in-region winning % than Hope, and split their two meetings.  I'd be amazed if they were tied in the regional rankings.  Calvin will very probably be #2 behind Wooster when the rankings are released.  Here's how I think they'll shape up, pending the result of CMU's game at Case tomorrow:

1. Wooster
2. Calvin
3. Wittenberg

If CMU beats CWRU,
4 (tie): CMU and Hope
6. Baldwin-Wallace

if CMU loses at CWRU:
4. Hope
5. Baldwin-Wallace
6. CMU

Forgotten BW lost Wed.

just bump up Hope and Calvin to 2.  BW down to 4, Witt up to 3.

DC----Hope and Calvin were already tied for 5th,  nothing has changed this week.

Trying to think like the NCAA here.  What's changed this week is that Calvin won two games, both over good teams (Albion and Kalamazoo, a total of 24 QoWI points), while Hope only won one, over a crummy team (Alma, 8 QoWI points).  They were tied last week, but since then Calvin's QoWI went up and Hope's went down, and while both had their regional win % go up, Calvin's went up faster.

This isn't like a voter's poll, where most voters probably use the prior week's poll as a starting point.  It's a brand new ranking each week, and there is nothing in the criteria that supports any result besides Calvin being ahead of Hope.

It's neither here nor there, since the only ranking that counts is the one on Selection Monday which we'll never see.  And that one will have the MIAA champ rated highest among the MIAA teams.

Congrats to the Knights on another solid win today.  Not flashy, nothing that really stood out - just a good effort all the way around, especially in the second half.  How this team got to 13-1 is still beyond me, but today's game was a pretty good representation of the way the whole MIAA season has been for the Knights.  They didn't dominate this game in any way, but they played hard, they were fairly efficient on offense, they hit some big shots and they got a few big stops.  End result:  a hard-fought and well-deserved win.  Trewhella had a nice game and Snoeyink was very good from start to finish.  Meckes was pretty good on both ends of the floor.  Maybe deserved a T on the one hang but it looked like someone might have been under him too.  My angle wasn't great.

I should add that K played equally hard and was equally efficient on offense.  They spread the floor great, used the skip pass very effectively and had great dribble drive penetration out of several different positions.  They also make the extra pass really well.  It looked like K maybe ran out of gas a little bit late in the game.  Maybe a little more depth on the Calvin bench.  Worst was awesome and so was Konwinski (sp?).  He is a really solid guard.  I had not seen K play this season and I have to say I was quite impressed.  That's a nice team, with emphasis on the word team.  Looks to me like they're heading into the MIAA Tourney playing pretty well.

Finally congrats to KVS on his 300th career win.  Ironically he got his 200th win at Calvin earlier this season ... at Kalamazoo.

Hardly the Knights best effort of the season but I also thought K was terrific, especially Konwinski and Worst. Konwinski repeatedly broke down Calvin's defense for scores and Worst hit some 3s from distances that would make Draayer jealous. According to the box Worst did his damage (18 points) in only 21 minutes of play. But the play of the game was provided late by Veldhouse (who else). With Calvin nursing a 68-65 lead, the shot clock running down and less less than 30 left in the game, Caleb penetrated the lane and had the ball poked away, I think by Herman. I was sure Veldhouse had lost the ball but apparently the K defender wasn't in position to claim the loose ball and Veldhouse recovered and calmly swished a 12 footer. Game over. How  many times have we seen this kid put a team away late with a back breaker? It's amazing but some people are just winners.

I thought Meckes was out of syc all game, twice missing easy dunks. I didn't think he should have been T'd up for hanging because he was merely righting himself as a defender was passing by his legs.

I disagree on Meckes.  His 4 blocks indicate he was very much a part of this game, despite the 2 missed dunks.  I think he only went for the dunk on the second because he missed the first.

You're right that he did have 4 blocks but he just didn't seem as impressive in the paint to me like he usually does. I thought he was out of position some. Maybe it's just that after Wednesday's dominating performance over arguably the best post player in the conference he looked more mortal like.

It does seem awfully strange that Hope would be on the bubble here.  They have creamed teams that Calvin has struggled with and won a tournament in which Calvin went 0-2.  They split with Calvin in the regular season, with a net point difference of +18, leading the one loss for 39:58.3  of the game.  If that is the way the system treats a quality team, we need a new system (and I'm a Calvin fan).

P.S. Shareef-drop the issue.  Sac has repeatedly shown his integrity on this board.  Move on.

I think that K was impressive. I really don't want to see them again. They played tough and grity game all afternoon and just wouldn't go away. It seems as if our guards were havinig trouble defending all game long. Yes, Meckes sohuld have been T'd up. He hit the ball while hanging on the rim. Maybe a T isn't the call their, but offensive goaltending possibly? There is no way they win that game without Snoeyink. He seems to be playing wtih tremendous confidence right now and looks like the sparkplug for the rest of the team lately. The last thing on Veldhouses shot, I think he would claim it was a move.  ;)

Anybody listening to the Hope game and have an update on what is going on?

I said this earlier in the week, and I will saw it again....I like the position the Hornets are in right now. Today's game in GR gave some of the younger players a taste of playing at Calvin. Now they have a chip on their shoulders going back home to host a game in the tourney. Then, it is back up to GR for a shot at revenge and the shocker of the season.

Worst had a career game today. Great timing considering it sounded as if Clancy was really out of it. Surprising, because in the first game between these two teams it was Clancy and Draayer trading buckets in the second half. What a change from earlier in the season when Kalamazoo would have wilted under the pressure of a more talented opponent in a difficult environment. Now, when they have 3-4 different guys contributing and they stick with RP's game plan, they will have a shot at the end of any game.

Beat T-State.

I agree that basket interference should have been called because the ball appeared to be in the cylinder when Meckes touched it. It didn't make any difference because the ball went OB and K was awarded the ball anyway.

You're right about Snoeyink. He came up big in this game, especially down the stretch.
