I know the requirement, I just think its weak.  Vanderheide isnt a 3 point shooter.  I give him credit for making a great percentage of the shots he took but to me its not even as close as impressive as Mo Brookins taking 110 3's and hitting on 40% of them.

Without trying to open up a can of worms here, the same could be said about Crawford and his new statistic. He isn't a shooter... he's a layup-er. Just my opinion though. Congratulations to both men on getting themselves into the record books. Nothing that can be said on here can take that away from them  :)

Its not Crawford's fault that there is only one team in this conference that can stop him from getting layups.  Turner knows what he has in Crawford and uses him accordingly, its up to the opposition to keep him from it.  Vanderheide on the other hand doesnt force you to make any adjustment other than the obvious move of not letting him take a wide open attempt.

I'm not trying to take anything away from either player.  In fact, they were both in my top 3 for MVP in my MIAA Fan Poll

Going off topic, which I tend to do a lot....anyone think about who is going to end up as DIII's National Player of the Year?  It definitely won't be a guy from the MIAA.  If I was on the panel to vote, I would without a doubt give the award to Lincoln University's Kyle Myrick who is averaging an astounding 31.5 points a game, and shooting 47 percent on the season.  To date, on the season he has amassed 757 points in 24 games played.

ziggy, no one blamed the officials for losing the game. but calls like that don't help the cause. when you're the underdog you need a near perfect game  by both the team and the officials to pull off an upset.

Question for Pat Coleman, SAC, David Collinge, Greg Sager, etc...

How can Hope, ranked 5th in the Feb 15 NCAA regional rankings with a 14-2 regional record, still have that same 14-2 regional record today (Feb 19) after picking up 2 wins last week? I know the game against TriState yesterday (Feb 18) "doesn't count" in the eyes of the NCAA, but the win last Wednesday against Alma (Feb 15) should have counted, which would now make them 15-2.

What am I missing?

Well Brandon Crawford set a all-time MIAA record for FG% in a single season going 109-154 in 14 games.  The new top 4.....

BEST FIELD GOAL SHOOTING PERCENTAGE

.708 Brandon Crawford, Albion 2005-06 (109-154)
.705 Steve Honderd, Calvin, 1991-92 (91-129)
.684 Wade Gugino, Hope, 1991-92 (91-133)
.684 Steve Honderd, Calvin, 1989-90 (81-117)

This a very impressive record to break imo, both of the other guys on this list were all-americans.

Honderd was not only an All-American, but also the player of the year in 1993 (should have been in 1992 as well in my opinion).  Congrats to Crawford.  Sort of sad to see Hondo bumped out of the top spot.  He remains probably the best D3 player I've ever seen.  Started out at Calvin as a pure post player and by the time he graduated he was a threat from anywhere on the court, including the three-ball.  His performance against Kalamazoo when he went for 60+ remains the most amazing single-game performance I've witnessed.  Crawford is definitely in good company.

Who should make the all MIAA team, I'm going to give my honest opinion, hopefully its not too biased, I'm trying my best to now favor certain players but who knows, this is what I honestly think they should be.

First Team

Crawford-MVP there is no argument against that

Phillips-Individual stats may not have been as high as they could/should have been, didn't get as many minutes as he would on most teams due to the talent overload and numerous blowouts. You can not argue against his heart though, and he rebounded like crazy.

Veldehouse-Hit the game winner in the biggest MIAA game of the year, and was solid almost all season.

Micah Williams-Great all around player

Vanderheide and Cramer- Maybe the two most talented/athletic players in the whole conference. They don't always get to show it because they share tehb all, but both are incredible players.

Draayer- Great player when uninjured, if you're putting together an all star team of the conference you've got to take him.

Immink- Great leader, a few off games but overall a great season.

I know this might stir some people up, I know its overloaded with players form the top teams, but I don't think you can honestly say you'd take anyone else in the conference over these guys at their positions. The only people who could maybe have made it would be Trewhella, Konwinski, and Voison.

Give me your honest and unbiased reactions.

Great senior day for Albion yesterday as Albion just shredded Olivet.  Albion started the game 19-0 and never really looked back from there.  It made for a very relaxed time in Kresge's bleachers.

Between that and seeing TSU and Kzoo play Hope and Calvin closely renewed my confidence that Albion can win the tourney.  It will take some determined play and solid execution but it is very doable.  But first, it starts with Adrian.  Good luck on Wednesday Brits.

I think BC is the clear MVP of the league.  His numbers are pretty gaudy, and doing what he did even as the focal point of the defense was impressive.

I agree with you on most points.  I would have Trewhella on there because they aren't where they are now with out him.  Draayer is known for his 3's and  Veldhouse has had an amazing freshman year but Trewhella is their true go to guy.  I doubt the Knights could have been anywhere near where they are now without him.  Since people are starting to talk about their picks I'll make mine public.  I'm sure some will disagree but I'm good with them.  Here are my picks...

MVP........1. Brandon Crawford, Albion 2. Kyle Trewhella, Calvin 3. Marcus Vanderheide, Hope

All-MIAA team........
First Team
Brandon Crawford, Albion
Zak Silas, Albion
Andy Draayer, Calvin
Kyle Trewhella, Calvin
Caleb Veldhouse, Calvin
Andy Phillips, Hope
Marcus Vanderheide, Hope
Eric Voisin, Hope

Second Team
Jeff Nokovich, Adrian
Mike Bailey, Albion
Mike Murphy, Alma
Josh Meckes, Calvin
Stephen Cramer, Hope
Kyle Konwinski, Kalamazoo
Gerald Dozie, Olivet
Mo Brookins, Tri State

Coach of the the Year........Kevin Vande Streek, Calvin

Freshman of the Year........1. Caleb Veldhouse, Calvin 2. Tony Benford, Tri State 3. Henry McCain, Kalamazoo

Upset of the Year.......Tri State over Albion, 2-1-06

Game of the Year.......Hope at Calvin, 2-8-06

I agree with you on most points. I just had a huge schpeel written out but it got erased so I will hopefully get more to the points here. These are my questions, no Micah Williams, I saw him play a couple of times and thought he was fantastic. My biggest beef is not having Cramer on the first team. If i was putting the team together I would put Voison second team and play Crawford at the 5 with Philly and Marcus playing the 4 spots. I don't know if you have seen Cramer play at all, but I truly believe his is the best athlete in the league. He is surrounded by a load of talent which keeps his minutes down, and he doesnt try to score and will, but I think he can score on anyone in the conference at any time. Good outside shooter, can take anyone to the rack, and can finish with the best of them, when he hangs up and hits this mid range jumpers over people its incredible. Also why no Immink at all, I would take him over Nokovich any day. I agree Veldehouse is the best in the League, but Immink and  Bailey are 2 and 3 not Nokovich.

Coach of the year is definetely coach Vandestreek. As much as I can't stand Calvin, I admit he is an amazing coach. He helped coach my hs baseball team and he was great. He is a great motivater and a true players coach. Look what he does with inferior tallent compared to a team like Hope. His starting 5 has 3 great players, and 2 ok players, but then off the bench I mean come one. Zoerhof would not even make Hopes varsity team, Smith was a decent player in Hopes Intramural league last year, and Chapell has potential but is not good yet. Yet Vandestreek gets it done with these guys and wins the league, that deserves props.

Ziggy my fine friend, I must say I am surprised that there was no mention of Snoeyink on your second team.  He started the season slow but the last 10 games or so have been very good for him.  I think all the voters need to show him some love (on the second team).
