When you clearly have the benefit of an official that has an agenda during a contest

I thought  there was a lack of respect by both Soderberg and Geerlings towards each other.  There seemed to be some animosity from the opening tip.  Geerlings was horrible both ways last night.  I thought the first T Soderberg got was cheap, but he deserved the second one.

Olivet played extremely hard last night.  They have very good talent, why they only won 2 league games is a mystery.

Geerlings is a horrbile ref. I said it before, and I sure as hell hope he doesn't get the Kzoo/Calvin game tomorrow night.

Kzoo held off TSU for a very  nice win last  night.  Up 6 with 1:45 to go, TSU had a 5 point possession, tp pull within a point. TSU had the ball with 15 secs left down one, but some stingy Hornet defense caused a turnover and Clancy nailed to FT's with 3 seconds left.

On to Knollcrest. This is Kzoo's first trip to the semis in 5 years. They will no doubt be excited, maybe a tad nervous... but I see them coming out like crazed dogs tomorrow night.

Not a well executed game last night for either team, but K did just enough to hold off TSU. Dribble penetration by TriState hurt the Hornets, but the D clamped down at the right times. Good to see K.Kon and Herman get a W at their last home game. Last night's MVP - Damon Krohn, who came off the bench for 13 (I think) with a few triples and some solid defense.

Bring on the Knights. I've got my ticket in hand and I'm already looking forward to my first trip up to Knollcrest in nearly 10 years.

The Bulldogs played a very good first half defensively against Albion, who struggled a little with Silas sitting with 2 fouls.  Albion played a pretty strong second half, with solid rebounding and good free throw shooting, to pull away.

Congrats to BC on setting the single-season scoring record for Albion and pulling into 8th place for career scoring.

Looking forward to a good game on Friday.

There were head-scratcher calls in Hope's game last night as well, but of course they go far less noticed in a 20 point yawner. Someone a ways back in the thread said that there was only 1 recognizable face among the 3 Calvin refs and it was the same way in Holland as I had not seen 2 of the 3 refs at any games before. There did end up being some really strange calls (which made players clearly chuckle a couple times since the game was realistically decided) and I'm glad I didn't see the same calls in a much tighter game.

As to the pushed-out/ball-out-of-bounds call that people questioned in the Calvin game, that sounds like a situation I've often seen where I'm convinced refs often knowingly split the difference. If point guard for team A is bringing the ball up the sideline, team B defender will swat for the ball and commit what could be called as kind of a ticky-tack foul, but it knocks the ball loose and out-of-bounds with the team A player having touched it last. When situations like that come up, I often get the impression that refs think: well that wasn't much of a foul to bother calling, but it sure isn't fair to instead give the ball to team B, so just split the difference and let team A keep the ball on the in-bound. I obviously didn't see that call, so don't know if it resembled such a situation, but that is what the description made me think of. Has anyone else seen such close foul/out-of-bounds calls and gotten the impression that the refs just make a middle ground call instead of a somewhat iffy call for either a foul or a turnover?

Was sitting right behind the Olivet coach the entire night.  During his last five minutes of the game, he quit coaching his players and directed 100% of his comments to the referees.  Let the refs ref, and the coaches should coach.

He quit on his team and spent all of his time focused and arguing with the refs.  Never talked to his players on the court during his last five minutes.

Olivet players will always have to wonder what might have been...6 technical free throws and losing by six.

In general, the coaches in the MIAA complain way too much.  The refs should not take so much from some of these guys.  coaches, just coach your players and set a good example for your fans.  Maybe they'll act with a little more class also!!

The tape lies!!! I saw it with my own two eyes!!!    :P Calvin went for the dager and won... it hurt so bad I the next day I jumped on a plane to Antigua and didn't look at the posts for 8 days... okay so maybe the trip to Antigua was planned... but I found my happy place on and island away from everything...

Hope says the tape lies, Kzoo says the refs cost them two games against Albion, Dozie says the refs are racist... Anyone else want to add anything?

:D :D

Civic, this may be the first time ever that we agree on something.  Seems like there are enough Cubs fans frequenting this forum that we could arrange a summer "posting up" outing to Wrigley.

I'd guess the Hornets are working on their press today and the Knights are working on their press-break.

I suppose it won't shock you if I confess to a lifelong allegiance to Chicago's major-league team on the South Side of town. :-*
And since it would constitute taunting if I told you how things worked out last year for my Knights and my Sox, I'll spare you the details. ;)
See you Friday at the Fieldhouse. ;D

I don't buy that.  There are coaches in the league that do a lot of complaining, but it's not just an MIAA thing.  Basketball coaches, in general, are pretty darn excitable.  Part of coaching is talking with the refs to ensure that your team doesn't get a raw deal.  A coach that criticizes refs isn't necessarily failing to coach, and is not necessarily setting a bad example for players and fans.  Olivet's coach is frequently out of control, though.  He doesn't seem to know where the line is, and how to blend actively coaching his players and advocating for them on the sideline.

big_yellow_hat

Not that it matters any more but on the play were Smith got pushed out it was originaly a no call and then changed to a foul and that is what pissed the Olivet coach off.  That is why Smith then went to the line and missed 2 shots.

I've watched him in particular for the last few years, and I cringe each time I see him (or Tommy Bray, or Dante Favors) step onto the floor--whether at Knollcrest/Devos/Civic Center...I never thought I'd see the day when I'd prefer Tom Hoffman over someone else...

Some I've noticed do an OK-to-good job on a regular basis: Dave Joppie, Mark Ditzworth.

Where's Ernie when you need him? (At least he wore patent leather crocodile shoes to the arenas from time to time.)  ;D

Does Geerlings do Hope games?
I was under the impression he is a Hope alumnus.

I don't know if he is a Hope alumnus or not, but I can tell you he has refed an Albion/Hope game in the last couple years.
