I think whats interesting about last nights FT parades in GR and Albion is that I don't believe we had a game come close to those FT totals in the regular season..........and despite a touchy call here or there I've really enjoyed the way they've let the kids play this year.  Hope's had several games where neither team reached the double bonus.

I will say this about all the fouls called on Olivet last night--they were legit. I know I'm saying this from the bias of a Calvin fan but there was only one call all night that put Calvin at the line that I thought was weak. The rest were earned and I didn't sense that the refs had a quick whistle at all. It's just that Olivet was playing very hard, almost desperate basketball to try and get back into the game. Not dirty mind you, just hard nosed defense that will create a lot of fouls on the defensive team.

On reflection, I think part of the reason more fouls were called last night is that teams typically play that style--more hard nosed, desperate BB common to underdogs who, like Olivet, are faced with extinction. Tournament basketball has a way of turning up the intensity level a notch. This also could explain Calvin's apparent cavalier attitude to the event. The Knights have a lot of key players with little or no experience in tournament level play--at least not at the college level--and I think that lack of experience and the flow of the game surprised some of the less mature Knight players.

Overall I didn't think the reffing last night was that bad. I've seen much worse in the MIAA, believe me. It's just too bad that a couple of T  calls dominated the game as much as they did.

2.  This question is in regard to the Calvin women.  Was Kelly Trewhella a mid-season transfer or did she transfer to Calvin in the fall?

She's been on Calvin's varsity since the beginning of the season. John Ross' preseason preview printed  on Calvin's web page before the season began mentions her.

I wasn't at the game in Albion last night, but after listening to it on the internet broadcast, I'm under the impression that a vast majority of Albion's trips to the free throw line were well earned.  From what I could gather, Adrian adopted a strategy whereby any Briton that had the guts to take the ball into the paint, including Crawford, basically got beat up.  I'm guessing the goal was to put Albion's bad FT shooters on the line in pressure situations, with the hope that they would not respond well.  Unfortunately (at least from my perspective), the Britons shot well enough from the line to keep the Bulldogs at arm's length throughout the second half.

She has been enrolled as a student since last spring

Ya, she went to West Palm Beach Atlantic last fall. She never played a game there, however, and was at Calvin for the spring semster. I guess that leaves out the possiblity of Calvin fans being hipocrits about DVS.  ;) It's a joke settle down.

A prediction.....Reimink from Hope will be a difference-maker Friday (and hopefully, Saturday).....Calvin and Albion both allowed Hope's bigs to shoot outside 10 feet and won because they failed to knock down shots.  (see A. Phillips' stats from both games)  Reimink can knock down shots and will force the defenses to respect inside and out.  Plus he can be physical with the Calvin bigs.  Phillips got manhandled physically at Calvin and Voisin cant score if he is bodied up.  Hope in two close games and hopefully won't have to play either team early in the big tourney!

And for those of us attending tomorrow night, we get to enjoy a ceremony honoring the guy (Joe Cooper) in charge of all the stripes   :o

By the way, they honored him at Hope/Calvin I......I for one was a little shocked by how thick his glasses were ;D

One wonders if Calvin fan will adhere to their quarter section of the Fieldhouse tomorrow night. If not, Kakaty, I would warn Hornet fan to "watch your mouth young man"

hoof, there are a lot of astute basketball fans here. Many have been watching MIAA games for a long time, many have played for their respective teams. The refs at time can effect the game, and ive seen it happen from time to time on this level (I won't mention the last time the Hornets were in the MIAA semis. Thanks a lot Ernie!!).  Just know that there are many people on here that know when a game is called the right way, and the wrong way.  It happens on all levels. I watched a horribly called game at the Breslin last Saturday, when the refs were way too involved in the game.  I'll let a ref know when he screwed up, and if he calls a good game.

I hope Joe Cooper wont be offended if I go enjoy a hot dog or pop while this ceremony takes place. Though Im sure the Hope and Calvin fans will be standing in their applause. ;)
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I agree olivet. Reimink, I believe, didn't get off the bench in the second contest at Calvin. I really liked this kid's game in high school. He a tough football player and a good one at that. Although, I havn't seen him much this year, he certainly brings something to the floor that no one else on Hope's squad does. He's a pretty intense kid out there with nice range. I believe that he will make a difference if given the chance. He cetainly has a nice carreer ahead of him.

They gave him a scholarship? Wow.

There is definitely a problem with the officiating when since last nights games there have been 5 pages of posts and about an eighth of them were about anything else.

The officials obviously had an effect on the game, if not we wouldn't be talking about them.  That's sad, because Olivet outplayed Calvin last night.

Nobody has mentioned, to my knowledge, where the problem started.  Before Dozie's T, Calvin had probably 5 of 6 possessions where they took the ball to the basket and all 5 of those times Olivet was called for a foul trying to block the shot.

Now, I'm not a kinesiology major, so I'm not up on my muscle movement and all that, but when guys like Andy Drayer, Kyle Trewella and Kyle Snoeyink are attacking the basket against guys like Dozie and Pruitt, their shot might actually get blocked once in a while.  As mentioned before, Todd did not think this to be the case.  I'd say 3 of those were actual fouls and two were clean blocks that Todd anticipated.

Geerlings was awful and as the senior member of the crew, he set a terrible tone. The bald guy was new, not racists, just horribley outmatched for the situation.  Kooiker stayed above everything, did a nice job and seemed embarrassed to be working with Geerlings.  He did a great job of keeping the Olivet coach from going Sprewell on Geerlings after the 2nd T.

On a positive note, Caleb Veldhouse is unbelievable. He doesn't appear to be that athletic, but hits every big shot (I think his 3 and a Smith jumper were the only non free-throws after the T parade) and is clutch when it counts.  Calvin fans should be very excited that they have 3 more years of this kid.

Well, I've got a big dilemma.  Who do I root for in the games tomorrow?  I've got to figure that, by making it into the semifinals, both Calvin and Hope are in the NCAA tournament, at least they should be.  I think Albion is too good to be left out of the NCAA picture, so I guess I'll have to root for Turner's Legions tomorrow.  I haven't seen Kzoo play this year, but I hear they play hard, and it'd be nice to see a big underdog sneak into the tournament if Albion loses.  Looks like I'm rooting for Albion and Kzoo tomorrow in GR, sick as it makes me to say it.  Or maybe I'll just root for the refs.

MIAA Officiating seems to be based on a favoring system .  Several players I know personally have tried to get along with the refs, but it doesnt always work that way.  Some refs have their minds made up what they will call, and what they won't.  Everyone is human, but that doesnt stop some refs from consistently making bad calls.  You have to think about it, some people are biased, its true.  They say you should just play the game, but its hard to when refs take over the game.  I thought the players are eventually supposed to be the one that influence the outcome in a game .  However, refs have a major part to do with it.  You can play all you want, but when refs disrupt the flow of the game, and then there is no flow.....  I want a nice called game for all teams involved, but in practice it won't always happen.  There will be calls that I will think that are good, and you might think are bad, or vice versa.  However there are also calls that are blatantly obvious (most people could agree that the call that was made was the wrong one).  We can continue this debate about officiating. We can complain, it wont change anything, all it will do is maybe make us feel a little better.  In reality those refs will still be there, the bad calls will still be made.  It won't be better until there are changes made.
