In general, I think the Flying Dutch' students (in regards to athletics) are a little more clever than most, and their college seems to encourage it.

"FIND the weight room." ...may be a bit more accurate for the Knights.  They are a smooth bunch of boys.  Only one or two of their players seem to have any muscular development.

My final thoughts on the K/Calvin game last night, before I retire for the season....With the current rosters Kalamazoo would beat Calvin 1 or 2 out of 10 games. The Hornets would have to play a nearly perfect game and get a few breaks from the opposition and the stripes. After a very impressive first half, wonderful D against the Knights and timely shooting, K was still only up 2 at the break. Calvin just wore them down in the 2nd.

Herman finished his season as he played his entire career - strong drives to the basket, fearless D and tremendous leadership. I would imagine Konwinski was disappointed with his play, particularly in the 2nd. He was bottled up by Calvin's D, as were the rest of the Hornets. Still, great careers by two good guys.

Kalamazoo's D was very good last night - I don't imagine this Calvin team has too many games shooting such a low % at home, but I could be wrong on that. Just not enough 2nd half O from Kzoo.

One more thoughts on the fans....If you are offended by loud, enthusiastic, loyal fans who cheer loudly for their team and heckle the opposition, why on earth are you watching college basketball? Try tennis or golf. Those sports are much less likely to insult your gentle disposition.

Lots to look forward to next season....RP had (in my opinion) his best coached season this year, proven players such as Brinkman, Clancy, Kellogg, Krohn and others will return, as will the ever-intriguing Henry McCain. The question is....which guard will step up and run the offense?

Go Hornets.

The first half of the Calvin game was distressingly similar to the first half of the Olivet game on Wednesday with Calvin not performing at its best while playing a highly motivated opponent who played with the desperation of an team having nothing to lose. When Calvin had only one field goal at the 13 minute mark of the first half I realized that I had watched the Knights' last 22 minutes of play on the Fieldhouse hardwood with only 3 (yes, that's 3) field goals made. Now that's ugly. Calvin was fortunate to be down only 2 at half.

The second half reminded me again why Meckes is such a dominating post player without being a great post scorer. He simply can rule the paint on the defensive end. Kzoo had a 2 on 1 break in the second half with Meckes as the lone defender. Whoever had the ball had no chance of converting. Meckes simply waited for the ballhandler to make his decision and then blasted the ball out of bounds It was a little like watching a dad play against his grade school age kids. The extra player doesn't matter.

Calvin finally started to make some 3's in the second half to pull away but they desperately need Draayer to shoot better tonight. Veldhouse can't do it alone. If the Knights are to have a chance against Hope they need more scoring from other players. Hope is the clear favorite but at least the Knights seem to be a lock for an at large bid. Maybe Calvin was saving some of those 3's for tonight. They will need them.

Another sac siting at the Fieldhouse (is that really 3 in one month and soon to be 4?).

The WWKVSD shirt (appropriately colored Maroon and Gold) was hilarious. Way to turn lemons into lemonade.

On the fan situation. Well let's just say that fans from every school are amazing in their ability to embarrass themselves and their school from time to time.

The listed attendance from the '02 final.......the last time Hope and Calvin split tickets at Calvin......was 4389

This Hope team has a lot more support behind it,  I'm guessing Hope got 2,250 for this one ? ?

Wouldn't expect many but I'd think there will be some available at the door.

.........and on that note, the 02 final was one of the best atmosphere's for a Hope/Calvin game I can remember.  Either it was or I remember the big 2nd half run Hope made to erase a 17 point first half deficit.  That'll always create a lot of noise.

I love the 50/50 ticket deal.......no matter what happens in the game someone's happy, someone's unhappy.  Creates a lot of electricity.

Maybe we could get everyone to wear their school's secondary color..........I'd like to see a whole bunch of orange and yellow tonight.

rumor is there will be a couple "Got Integrity?" t-shirts tonight.

Looks like I might have to pull out my "Got Football?" shirt.....in orange and blue of course.  ;D

In which school's colors?

K student section "let's play football " classic. Sitting across from the student section one could see  the Calvin student body smiling at the creativity of the K cheers. Calvin alums may have thought it disgraceful but the students didn't.

I'm sorry to see the careers of Herman and Konwinski come to an end. They have provided inspiration to the young players that return.

Calvin won the game. Both teams played hard and with class.  It will be a great battle tonight.

Does anyone have any favorite picks on the other big games today? As a Hope fan, I'm picking Witt over Woo and Carrol over Lawrence, I don't think either of them will complete the sweep.

Sorry DC  ;)

There's nothing disgraceful or offensive about the "Let's play football" chant but its just not a classic anymore. The first time I ever heard it I laughed and thought it was pretty creative but it's not anymore--its just a lazy fallback line I've heard for years. It's time to put it back on the shelf because it lacks the punch and humor it once had.

 Quite true.

For tonight:
If it's last 2 games are any indication it wouldn't be surprising if Calvin digs itself into a hole early on that they can't get out of this time  The other scenario would be a replay of the game several weeks ago when Hope didn't capitailze on early opportunities and let Calvin hang around.  If this happens, and Calvin is within 5 points with 3 minutes left it is a coin toss who wins.  OT definitely favors Hope.  The worst sceanario for Calvin is they are hot early on and build a nice lead which they have to defend.  This hasn't gone well in the past.
