Let me add early 80's Hope names Matt Neil, Todd Schuilling, Dan Gustad, Dave Beckman, and Chip Henry... and Jeff Heerdt.  for 5 or 6 years, these guys dominated the MIAA and kick started the GVW era.  Though they came up short in the NCAA's, they were the most exciting hoops group that I've had the pleasure of following.  Also out of that era, as someone else mentioned, were Randy Morrison, along with  Kerry Sardin from Olivet, and Michael Mack from Adrian.
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Heard it around campus and just found it on the website--Brandon Crawford was named a first team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, which I think means he was the player of the year in the region.

Congrats BC.

That's two years in a row that Albion has had an NABC first team All-American.

Final D3Hoops.com poll has Hope at #6, Calvin at #14 and Albion at #23.
Final Massey ratings has Hope at #3, Calvin at #11 and Albion at #20.

Sac, I like your suggestion about a charity game.  Maybe we could get a posters' exhibition going between the doubleheader games.  Kcrest and Oldknight still have a little left ;).
I resemble that remark! ;D

A charity game is a good idea, but having the over 30 crowd play could be a little depressing.  Although I imagine Steve Honderd would still be fun to watch!  I second hopefan's post about Matt Neil, Todd Schuilling, ect. Those games were good.  Matt Neil was a hoss and Gustad could throw down with the best of them.

Regarding Benson - I had just started getting familiar with Hope hoops - actually was aware of Scott Benson, couldn't remember the name without my Hope hoops history book- If he was a year ahead of Matt Neil, that explains it, if he was same year as Matt, I guess Matt made the bigger impression on me.  But I do remember Benson as a very exciting player.  Will still never forget Hope - Witt and then Hope Wabash (Metzelaars)at the Civic.

I remember a highly touted Wittenberg team coming into the Civic and the Hope boys taking it at the mighty Tigers in the paint.  That was the one and only time the Hope program has played Witt outside of the confines of Witt's gym, I believe.  Hmmmmm imagine that, Hope has played Witt six or so times and only one has been in Holland.....can't help but wonder how that happens so often....even when Hope is ranked higher......

Good 'ol boy system?  At some point you wonder.

Good ol' Buckeye boys?
Maybe it's the Ohio smokies who control the seeding so they can stick it to the Michigan motorists who make the sojourn down to scenic Springfield at something in excess of the legal limit? :(
I know Sac will agree with me.

Only problem is that Sac Gordon got caught in Michigan (the officer must have been an Ohio transplant)

A thought about a best of the MIAA team.  Have you ever wondered how well one of those kind of teams would really play?

I mean, a team full of superstars isn't always the best team, because you just made a team full of players that all fill the same basic role - star.  It might be fun to make that superstar team, and have them play another team we make of the "non-superstars" who just always give 110% and out-hustle everyone, and get every loose ball.

Now I realize that some of those superstars were that kind of player, and that's what made them great, but it's something to think about since we aint playin no games

Your point is well taken but I understood we were searching for a team comprising the top players in MIAA history, not necessarily a team most likely to "share the ball' or "play the right way" if they ever got on the court together.

I wasn't trying to change the search for the best ever in the MIAA, it's just something I thought might be an interesting side discussion.

Yes thats Sargent Long of the Jackson County Sherriffs Department.......in Michigan.  Kind of ironic that I got a letter today saying I overpaid for the ticket.  At least they're honest. ;D

......and I've witnessed first hand the sudden Ohio Highway Patrol enforcement of speed limits in central Ohio.......especially Friday evening before a certain football game.  One year I counted 25 pullovers in about a 50 mile drive.........I've made that drive in every month of the year and in the other 11 months I rarely see a single law enforcement official.  :-\

Actually Wittenberg brought a team to one of Hope's holiday tournaments in 1994...........Wittenberg won 87-77 in OT,  the young Dutchmen blew a 15 point lead that evening.  Hope was pretty average that year finishing 16-10,  Witt made it to the Final Four and finished 3rd.

I believe that Final Four was in Springfield too.
