Speaking of small worlds..........kcrest, I believe I've played golf with Mr Hoogewind a number of times in my Kent County Amateur tournament days.  Nice guy and a very good player.

One year his alignment was so screwed up he was literally puting the club on the ground to align himself on every shot.......not something you see much even in amateur golf tournaments.  I had no idea he was a former Calvin hooper, ........of course with all the dutch names around GR I suppose it not entirely impossible there is more than one Mark Hoogewind.

I also was paired up with a Calvin player from the early 90's who's name escapes me.........I knew his face and name were familiar but I couldn't place him........and finally asked, when he mentioned he played at Calvin we of course had much to discuss........, he had just moved back to GR after finishing medical school.

.......and I'm retired from amateur golf competition.  ;D
Yep that's the same guy (as Oldknight said).  Hoogewind is a pretty good stick.  Nice guy but intense on the golf course.  Not sure who the early 90s guy who went to med school might have been.  Maybe Boyd Kroeze?  he played varsity tennis at Calvin.  Not sure if he played golf.  Ricky Shilts is a good golfer too.  As you well know Sac for a time in the MIAA almost all of the men's golf coaches were also either varsity basketball coaches or varsity assistants.  Those guys had some fun sitting in the clubhouse, drinking coffee and talking hoops! ;D

And now, with Coach Riley no longer coaching golf, the only basketball coach left is Turner at Albion.  Although Morrison at Olivet is still the best basketball coach on campus.

sac

Albion's head coach was Jordan Rich last fall.  Buck Riley and Gary Morrison were the only two left who have ties to basketball.

When I played only Hope had a non-basketball coach, I believe Timmer at Calvin was the golf coach and he may have been one of Douma's assistants.  Can't remember.

I think those guys had a lot of fun playing together and a couple of those coaches could play really well.........and a couple couldn't.  ;) :D

.....on a side note, I was on Hope's current head golf coach Bob Ebels' first team.  He told me then he was only going to do it for a year.

Bob just finished his 15th year as the men's golf coach.

Coaching college golf has got to be the best coaching gig on campus.  There isn't much "coaching" that can be done with guys that age.  They all know how to play and they don't want to hear anything you tell them at that age anyway.  Its not like there's a lot of strategy involved.

Its pretty much free golf for the coaches. ;) :D

The big work for the college golf coach comes in recruiting.  Ebels is one of the best when it comes to that.  He's been able to consistently bring in top quality talent, including several players over the years (Wohlfield and Shedd come to mind immediately) that really should have been playing at a higher level.  My mistake on Turner at Albion, I didn't know he'd stopped doing golf.  When I was at the MIAA tournament at Tri State this fall, he was there, so I just assumed :-\

I think you can apply that to some of the fb players too including at DIII! ;D

Jordan Rich is no longer at the College. Albion has two new coaches hired for the fall.

I played three years at K, only because Smokin Joe was the golf coach as well. It was a blast, preseason at Garland, and playing the KCC everyday.  Some other decent courses around the league as well, but I'd say Wuskowhan blows them all away.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

A lot of the CCIW golf coaches are tied to the various hoops programs as well. Augustana's men's golf coach is men's basketball head coach Grey Giovanine. Carthage's two golf teams are coached by men's basketball assistant coaches Dave Roehl (men's golf) and Cory Wilson (women's golf). Elmhurst's women's golf team is coached by men's basketball assistant coach John Baines. And North Park's golf teams are coached by men's basketball head coach Paul Brenegan (men's golf) and men's basketball assistant coach Steve Schafer (women's golf).

I suspect that this is a pretty common practice in D3 sports, where doubling up coaching assignments is a way of life. It's interesting, though, how basketball coaches seem to be the ones who land what Sac accurately described as "the best coaching gig on campus," rather than the football coaches. Only one CCIW football coach doubles as a golf coach; Millikin's men's golf coach is an assistant coach for the Big Blue gridders.

Wheaton's men's golf coach is also their men's soccer coach. That strikes me as a really weird combo, for some reason.

Sac:  You are right about Mr. Timmer.  He was one of Eddie's assistants.  His son is now at Calvin coaching as well.  The son spent some time (8-9) years at a college in N. OH.  In fact he was there at the time the game that shall not be mentioned was played.
Regarding A. Tuls if memory serves correctly he played at Holland C., and his dad A. Tuls sr. was coach.

Yeah, Timmer's son was the golf coach for a year or two, and now coaches baseball if I'm not mistaken.

Jordan Rich was not the  golf coach at Albion last fall as Turner still coached the team.  Jordan will take over this spring.

Timmer's "Dream Job" is coaching men's varsity basketball at Calvin. That it for what's it worth. I know you were mentioning a d3hoops charity game in between the throwback Calvin-Hope game (great idea). I think we might be better off hosting a golf tourney.

A golf tournament, now there's an interesting idea.  Just don't hold it at Watermark, that course always had my number.

Then why isn't he an assistant?  then he could learn WWKVSD
