He treated Ray just like he treated everyone else.
One thing you can say about him....he was consistent.

I can say that in my own personal interactions with him, I have come away as less than impressed and would tend to agree he thinks his stuff doesn't stink. At least 3 people I know and have spoken at length to (who used to play or work with Jay) also confirmed this sentiment.

Good luck to him wherever he goes, but I think now that the MIAA will be better off with him not recruiting directly against us, rather than against other MAC schools like he should have been doing all along (Meerman, Bowne, Bonhoff, Kaman, Paintland, Harman, etc...)

Is there a connection b/w CMU's opening and KVS's AD resignation?

KVS is a man you can count on when the Chips are down. ;D
And you've got to like those CMU colors. 8)

realist and devossed:  Thanks for the follow-up info.  As in any life situation, it appears that there is always some who like a coach and others who do not, all for a variety of reasons whether personal or general.

Kaman is in a little different league than the others mentioned here.  You have to give Smith some credit for that one.

Yes I may split the difference with you and defer in that he is a dominant player now, and probably hasn't hit his full stride yet. But he wasn't this good coming out of high school, and was really dominant in the light of watered-down Class D ball. I think it really took a good six months to a year of development at Central before anybody realized what his full potential was. But coming out of high school, all the MIAA's were after him and it was perceived by some that Central would be out of his league.

I am happy for him that he's proved the naysayers wrong...

But despite that, I hope you get the gist of my point that Jay Smith really doomed himself when he kept going after MIAA-level talent when he should have been searching for legit D-1 talent. One blossoming 7-footer doesn't guarantee you a gravy ticket forever...

Smith's career at CMU was definitely strange, with about  zero consistency.  He's the only MAC coach to win two championships in this decade, yet has at least 3 years where they failed to win 10 games. Very odd.

I'd love Steve Schmidt to get a look for this job. He's a  CMU alumn, and one of the hardest workers I have ever known.  I knew him growing up in the Lansing area, and worked out with him often. Very, very solid guy. There aren't many people more competitive than Coach Schmidt.

DV:  I think I understand your point.  J was not univerally liked nor respected.  Your point may be valid that he hurt the MIAA, but one can make a better argument that he really hurt the D2 schools more than the MIAA.  The MIAA won a natioanl championship with Smith at CMU, and Hope and Albion had great years as well.  For most h.s. kids the talk of a D-1 ride is very heady wine, and it is hard to resist someone talking sweet talk in your ear.  When you review the list of players Smith got to CMU if they hadn't gone there most probably would have gone D2 or NAIA simply for the money.  It may be with Smith concentrating on W. MI he drew other coaches to the area to review the talent pool.  My thought was Smith felt he could do better with the more disciplined, intelligent, solid fundamental players we see at the h.s. level in our area.
Most coaches are lucky if they find (and are able to develop) a diamond in the rough like Kaman once in their career.

A little off topic, but did any of you catch the UEFA CL final yesterday? I love the coverage it received.  It is getting me psyched for the World Cup.  June 12  12:00pm: US v Czech Rep.    For any of you out this way, Connor O'Neals in Ann Arbor is televising all games.

Stinger - I'm a big soccer fan as a well, and I did watch the match yesterday.  I was amazed how long Arsenal hung in there playing almost 80 minutes with only 10 men.  My son was loving the outcome as well, as he is a Ronaldinho fan (I got his Brazilian National Team jersey for my son 2 weeks ago in Brazil) and his buddy is an Arsenal fan.  Gotta love those bragging rights!

Can't wait for the Cup - U S A, U S A, U S A ...

I caught the last 60 minutes of the cup final, very entertaining.  You had to know Barca would find a way through with the man advantage for that much time.

My only gripe was that it appears the players are in prime world cup flopping form, some of those guys went down like they were shot.  Looks like another shamefull summer of flops coming up in Germany.  Oh well, still good stuff.

.....and FDF, you go to Brazil and you couldn't come up with a photo of a Brazilian woman wearing a BW shirt for me?  ;D ;)

I tried, really I did, but no luck.  Guess they don't have many Portuguese classes at BW :D

FDF, glad to hear you're a junkie. Being a Real Madrid fan (going to the Bernabeu during study abroad was an unforgetable experience), it was a bit difficult to watch Barca lift the Cup.  But it was a great week for Spanish teams, as Sevilla took home the UEFA cup last Wed.

SAC, the Serie A is in a world of hurt, and I somehow think it's going to get a helluva lot worse.

Finally got in to see "The Dick". I'm sure the place takes on a completely different atmosphere when there are actually people there, as it was a bit quiet on Friday. But wow... very impressive. My tour guide did point out a few of the problem areas, typical of a building that was rushed to completion... I remember the new library took several years to get straightened up, with new carpet just a few years after the thing was built! I can't wait to actually come back during the season and see a game... Maybe next year!
