Mr. Ypsi

arena,

I stand corrected.  I went to their website, but somehow missed that page.

Since BYU is not just 'affilated', but OWNED and RUN by the LDS, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.  But my impression was that BYU was closer to Notre Dame than to some other church-owned schools.  Guess I'd better rely less on my impressions and more on MORE research - mine was obviously not enough!

Batista changes his mind?

I guess recruiting goes beyond underclassman in the summer.  It'd be interesting to see Batista's email inbox since May 1st.

Pat Cunningham, K '74.  Smokin Joe beat out Coach Cunningham for the Head Coach opening after Coach Ray Steffen stepped down in 1987. He's a great guy and success follows him whever he goes.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Quote from: arena on July 11, 2006, 07:46:55 PMYour guess would be a little low.

Approximately 98 percent of BYU students were members of the Church of Jesus Christ, with the remaining 2 percent representing more than 20 other faiths.

Legendary "punky QB" Jim McMahon of the 1980s Chicago Bears (among other teams) was one of the 2% of Brigham Young undergrads who wasn't a Mormon. I would imagine that that 2% is prominently represented among BYU's student-athletes. BYU's football dorm had strict security, so McMahon used to make his Mormon girlfriend (whom he later married) sneak in six-packs of beer for him.

I guess that the true definition of love is when your religion and your school both prohibit alcohol, yet you still agree to act as your boyfriend's beer mule.

Has anyone considered the possibility that GVW went to BYU simply because they were the only Ed.D program to accept him?  :D
Frankly, it isn't such a big surprise that GVW liked some aspects of the Mormon culture.  They like rules, and most of them follow rules without question.  Also have a tendency to like to earn position or rank.  I once heard a joke something to the effect the difference between most Dutch and most Mormons is the Mormon won't have the beer even if you offer to buy it!!! ;)

It's interesting you mention the liking and following of rules, considering what has been implied by a couple posts over the last few days.

[Zach Osburn's] hoping to make that same kind of an impact at Hope and he's working hard to impress the coaches during breaks in Hope's summer camps and during pickup game with current and former players.

It's great to see Hope working hand-in-hand with the NCAA, making sure their coaches are not evaulating their athletes during the off-season.  That statement harkens back to Bosma's newspaper quote about the wonderful Hope coach that worked with him in the weightroom all summer.

You are old...and you're a Cub fan. ::)
That's a bad combination if you're looking for glory on this old sod during your lifetime. :'(
You've got slightly better odds that the Flying Dutchmen will be unfurling a banner before they eulogize you and FDF.  ;D

A guy I worked with (who is also a Cubs fan) always told me he couldn't die until the Cubs had won the World Series - that way he could go ice skating for all eternity   ;D

By then, John Ross should have the Calvin women's program fine tuned to compete with the Flying Dutch to go deep in the national tourney.

I sure HOPE so (sorry - couldn't resist).  But that would be really cool if they both somehow made it to the Final Four (of course I'm sure the NCAA will never let that happen)  :)
